  • Subsurface Investigation results always reflect a level of soil uncertainty, which sometimes requires statistical corrections of the data for the appropriate engineering decision. This study suggests a closed-form framework to extract the outlying data points from the testing results using the statistical geo-spatial information analyses with outlier analysis and kring-based crossvalidation. The suggested analysis method is conducted to soil stratification using the borehole data in Yeouido.

  • Considering importance and specificity, site investigations for deep geological disposal of Spent Nuclear Fuel require stringent quality control, unlike general geotechnical investigations for tunnels and bridges. In this study, we present a case of selecting geophysical survey method for individual site investigation stage and preparing geophysical survey guideline. The proposed geophysical survey guidelines include procedures, considerations, and quality control for exploration planning, data acquisition, data processing, and interpretation. They comprehensively summarize the contents of airborne electromagnetic survey and seismic reflection survey.

  • Shear wave velocity($V_S$), which can be obtained using various seismic tests, has been emphasized as representative geotechnical dynamic characteristic mainly for seismic design and seismic performance evaluation in the engineering field. For the application of conventional geotechnical site investigation techniques to geotechnical earthquake engineering, standard penetration tests(SPT) and piezocone penetration tests(CPTu) together with a variety of borehole seismic tests were performed at many sites in Korea. Through statistical modeling of the in-situ testing data, in this study, the correlations between $V_S$ and geotechnical in-situ penetrating data such as blow counts(N value) from SPT and piezocone penetrating data such as tip resistance ($q_t$), sleevefriction($f_s$), and pore pressure ratio($B_q$) were deduced and were suggested as an empirical method to determine $V_S$. Despite the incompatible strain levels of the conventional geotechnical penetration tests and the borehole seismic tests, it is shown that the suggested correlations in this study are applicable to the preliminary estimation of $V_S$ for Korean soil layers.

  • Engineering geological studies were conducted for igneous rocks in southeast Korean peninsula. The purpose of the study is to establish zoning in view of engineering geology in ground construction. For engineering geological implication, lithology, lineament structure and discontinuities were surveyed and analysed. Using constructed data, We compared geological and engineering geological characteristics and made out the detailed engineering geological map. The map responses engineering characteristics such as weathering degrees, discontinuity systems of different rock types.

  • One of the important roles of geophysical exploration in archeological survey may be to provide the subsurface information for effective and systematic excavations of historical remains. Ground Penetrating Radar (GPA) can give us images of shallow subsurface structure with high resolution and is regarded as a useful and important technology in archeological exploration. Since the buried cultural relics are the three-dimensional (3-D) objects in nature, the 3-D or areal survey is more desirable in archeological exploration. 3-D GPR survey based on the very dense data in principle, however, might need much higher cost and longer time of exploration than the other geophysical methods, thus it could have not been applied to the wide area exploration as one of routine procedures. Therefore, it is important to develop an effective way of 3-D GPR survey. In this study, we applied 3-D GPR method to investigate the possible historical remains of Baekje Kingdom at Gatap-Ri, Buyeo city, prior to the excavation. The principal purpose of the investigation was to provide the subsurface images of high resolution for the excavation of the surveyed area. Besides this, another purpose was to investigate the applicability and effectiveness of the continuous data acquisition system which was newly devised for the archeological investigation. The system consists of two sets of GPR antennas and the precise measurement device tracking the path of GPR antenna movement automatically and continuously Besides this hardware system, we adopted a concept of data acquisition that the data were acquired arbitrary not along the pre-established profile lines, because establishing the many profile lines itself would make the field work much longer, which results in the higher cost of field work. Owing to the newly devised system, we could acquire 3-D GPR data of an wide area over about $17,000 m^2$ as a result of the just two-days field work. Although the 3-D GPR data were gathered randomly not along the pre-established profile lines, we could have the 3-D images with high resolution showing many distinctive anomalies which could be interpreted as old agricultural lands, waterways, and artificial structures or remains. This case history led us to the conclusion that 3-D GPR method can be used easily not only to examine a small anomalous area but also to investigate the wider region of archeological interests. We expect that the 3-D GPR method will be applied as a one of standard exploration procedures to the exploration of historical remains in Korea in the near future.

  • Domestic design manuals provide various empirical relationships of design parameters of soils with N values from the Standard Penetration Test (SPT), which can be widely used in the basic design process as well as during the construction process. However, the currently used empirical relationships are based on the data from foreign countries and are rarely evaluated with domestic data with currently used site investigation techniques. Therefore, in this study, those empirical relationships and conversion tables are evaluated with the geotechnical information in the Integrated DB Center of National Geotechnical Information and new empirical relationships are newly proposed with the consideration of domestic geotechnical conditions.

  • This investigation used two different geophysical logging techniques to confirm the depth to which a sheet pile was driven. Depth was estimated through analysis of the movement speed and three-component movement directions of a P-wave transmitted through the ground. It was also estimated by pole-pole and pole-dipole methods using electrical data logging to measure apparent resistivity. The two methods' respective results were 9.0 m (±1.5 m) and 7.5 m. As field ground conditions will include mixtures of various materials, electrical data logging is judged to be suitable for assessing depth due to its low signal-to-noise ratio.

  • This is a comparative study on the characteristics of excavated soils, which is proceeded using soil strength parameter by literature, geotechnical investigation, standard penetration test by drilling, and downhole test by borehole at six sites in urban areas. The results of these site surveys are used as basic data for the evaluation and development of prediction of ground subsidence risk. Geotechnical properties are estimated with the result of standard penetration test-N value and literature. The dynamic geotechnical characteristics are also estimated with top-down seismic exploration at borehole.

  • A soil-structure interaction (SSI) experiment is being conducted in a seismically active region in Hualien, Taiwan. To obtain earthquake data for quantifying SSI effects and providing a basis to benchmark analysis methods, a 1/4-th scale cylindrical concrete containment model similar in shape to that of a nuclear power plant containment was constructed in the field where both the containment model and its surrounding soil, surface and sub-surface, are extensively instrumented to record earthquake data. In between September 1993 and May 1996, fifteen earthquakes with Richter magnitudes ranging from 4.2 to 6.2 were recorded. The recorded data were analyzed to provide information on the response characteristics of the Hualien soil-structure system, the SSI effects and the ground motion characteristics. The ground response data were analyzed for their variations with depth, with distance from the model structure, and at the same depths along downhole arrays. Variations of soil stiffness and soil-structure system frequencies were also evaluated against maximum ground motion. In addition, the site soil properties were derived based on correlation analysis of the recorded data and then correlated with those from the geotechnical investigation data.
