Heavy rainfall events are occurred exceedingly various forms by a complex interaction between synoptic, dynamic and atmospheric stability. As the results, quantitative precipitation forecast is extraordinary difficult because it happens locally in a short time and has a strong spatial and temporal variations. GOES-9 imagery data provides continuous observations of the clouds in time and space at the right resolution. In this study, an power-law type algorithm(KAE: Korea auto estimator) for estimating rainfall based on the rainfall type was developed using geostationary meteorological satellite data. GOES-9 imagery and automatic weather station(AWS) measurements data were used for the classification of rainfall types and the development of estimation algorithm. Subjective and objective classification of rainfall types using GOES-9 imagery data and AWS measurements data showed that most of heavy rainfalls are occurred by the convective and mired type. Statistical analysis between AWS rainfall and GOES-IR data according to the rainfall types showed that estimation of rainfall amount using satellite data could be possible only for the convective and mixed type rainfall. The quality of KAE in estimating the rainfall amount and rainfall area is similar or slightly superior to the National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service's auto-estimator(NESDIS AE), especially for the multi cell convective and mixed type heavy rainfalls. Also the high estimated level is denoted on the mature stage as well as decaying stages of rainfall system.
The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) is under development to provide a monitoring of ocean-color around the Korean Peninsula from geostationary platforms. It is planned to be loaded on Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) of Korea. The GOCI has been designed to provide multi-spectral data to detect, monitor, quantify, and predict short term changes of coastal ocean environment for marine science research and application purpose. The target area of GOCI observation covers sea area around the Korean Peninsula. Based on the nonlinear radiometric model, the GOCI calibration method has been derived. The radiometric model of GOCI has been validated through radiometric ground test. From this ground test result, GOCI radiometric model has been changed from second order to third order. In this paper, the radiometric test performed to evaluate the radiometric nonlinearity is described and the GOCI radiometric error propagation is analyzed. The GOCI radiometric calibration is based on onboard calibration devices; solar diffuser, DAMD (Diffuser Aging Monitoring Device). The radiometric model error due to the dark current nonlinearity is considered as a systematic error. Also the offset correction error due to gain/offset instability is considered. The radiometric accuracy depends mainly on the ground characterization accuracies of solar diffuser and DAMD.
GOCI(Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) is the core paryload of the geostationary satellite COMS(Communication, Ocean and Meteological Satellite) for ocean monitoring. It is scheduled to be launched at the end of 2008. GOCI observes ocean color around the Korean Peninsula over $2500km{\times}2500km$ area. Whole field of view is divided into 16 solts and scan mechanism enables to point each slot position. Tilted two-axis scan method is used to observe entire field of view with great pointing stability. Vignetting of the optical system appears when the partial obscuration by intermediate optical components occurs. It leads to the variation of the illumination in the image and gradual fading near the edge of the field. It should be prohibited for the stable radiometric performances. In this work, vignetting analysis of GOCI optical system is performed. For the systematic approach, GOCI optical system is divided into scan mechanism part and telescope part. Vignetting analysis of each part is performed and each result is combined for the overall vignetting performances. The analyzed results can be applied to the selection of slot acquisition angle of scan mechanism to minimize vignetting effects.

Due to high spatio-temporal variability of amount and optical/microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols, satellite-based observations have been demanded for spatiotemporal monitoring the major aerosols. Observations of the heavy aerosol episodes and determination on the dominant aerosol types from a geostationary satellite can provide a chance to prepare in advance for harmful aerosol episodes as it can repeatedly monitor the temporal evolution. A new geostationary observation sensor, namely the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), onboard the Himawari-8 platform, has been observing high spatial and temporal images at sixteen wavelengths from 2016. Using observed spectral visible reflectance and infrared brightness temperature (BT), the algorithm to find major aerosol type such as volcanic ash (VA), desert dust (DD), polluted aerosol (PA), and clean aerosol (CA), was developed. RGB color composite image shows dusty, hazy, and cloudy area then it can be applied for comparing aerosol detection product (ADP). The CALIPSO level 2 vertical feature mask (VFM) data and MODIS level 2 aerosol product are used to be compared with the Himawari-8/AHI ADP. The VFM products can deliver nearly coincident dataset, but not many match-ups can be returned due to presence of clouds and very narrow swath. From the case study, the percent correct (PC) values acquired from this comparisons are 0.76 for DD, 0.99 for PA, 0.87 for CA, respectively. The MODIS L2 Aerosol products can deliver nearly coincident dataset with many collocated locations over ocean and land. Increased accuracy values were acquired in Asian region as POD=0.96 over land and 0.69 over ocean, which were comparable to full disc region as POD=0.93 over land and 0.48 over ocean. The Himawari-8/AHI ADP algorithm is going to be improved continuously as well as the validation efforts will be processed by comparing the larger number of collocation data with another satellite or ground based observation data.

Korea Meteorological Administration(KMA) has issued the tropical storm(typhoon) warning or advisories when it was developed to tropical storm from tropical depression and a typhoon is expected to influence the Korean peninsula and adjacent seas. Typhoon information includes current typhoon position and intensity. KMA has used the Dvorak Technique to analyze the center of typhoon and it's intensity by using available geostationary satellites' images such as GMS, GOES-9 and MTSAT-1R since 2001. The Dvorak technique is so subjective that the analysis results could be variable according to analysts. To reduce the subjective errors, QuikSCAT seawind data have been used with various analysis data including sea surface temperature from geostationary meteorological satellites, polar orbit satellites, and other observation data. On the other hand, there is an advantage of using the Subjective Dvorak Technique(SDT). SDT can get information about intensity and center of typhoon by using only infrared images of geostationary meteorology satellites. However, there has been a limitation to use the SDT on operational purpose because of lack of observation and information from polar orbit satellites such as SSM/I. Therefore, KMA has established Advanced Objective Dvorak Technique(AODT) system developed by UW/CIMSS(University of Wisconsin-Madison/Cooperative Institude for Meteorological Satellite Studies) to improve current typhoon analysis technique, and the performance has been tested since 2005. We have developed statistical relationships to correct AODT CI numbers according to the SDT CI numbers that have been presumed as truths of typhoons occurred in northwestern pacific ocean by using linear, nonlinear regressions, and neural network principal component analysis. In conclusion, the neural network nonlinear principal component analysis has fitted best to the SDT, and shown Root Mean Square Error(RMSE) 0.42 and coefficient of determination($R^2$) 0.91 by using MTSAT-1R satellite images of 2005. KMA has operated typhoon intensity analysis using SDT and AODT since 2006 and keep trying to correct CI numbers.
Probability distribution of the sea surface slope is estimated using sun glitter images derived from visible radiometer on Geostationary Meteorological Satellite (GMS) and surface vector winds observed by spaceborne scatterometers. The brightness of the visible images is converted to the probability of wave surfaces which reflect the sunlight toward GMS in grids of 0.25 deg $\times$ 0.25 deg. Slope and azimuth angle required for the reflection of the sun's ray toward GMS are calculated for each grid from the geometry of GMS observation and location of the sun. The GMS images are then collocated with surface wind data observed by three scatterometers. Using the collocated data set of about 30 million points obtained in a period of 4 years from 1995 to 1999, probability distribution function of the surface slope is estimated as a function of wind speed and azimuth angle relative to the wind direction. Results are compared with those of Cox and Munk (1954a, b). Surface slope estimated by the present method shows narrower distribution and much less directivity relative to the wind direction than that reported by Cox and Munk. It is expected that their data were obtained under conditions of growing wind waves. In general, wind waves are not always developing, and slope distribution might differ from the results of Cox and Munk. Most of our data are obtained in the subtropical seas under clear-sky conditions. This difference of the conditions may be the reason for the difference of slope distribution.
The reflectance observed in the visible channels of a geostationary meteorological satellite can be used to calculate the amount of cloud by comparing the reflectance with the observed solar radiation data at the ground. Using this, the solar radiation arriving at the surface can be estimated. This study used the Meteorological Imager (MI) reflectance observed at a wavelength of 675 nm and the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) reflectance observed at similar wavelengths of 660 and 680 nm. Cloudy days during a typhoon and sunny days with little cloud cover were compared using observation data from the geostationary satellite. Pixels that had more than 40% reflectance in the satellite images showed less than 0.3 of the cloud index and blocked more than 70% of the solar energy. Pixels that showed less than 15% reflectance showed more than 0.9 of the cloud index and let through more than 90% of the solar energy to the surface. The calculated daily accumulated solar radiation was compared with the observed daily accumulated solar radiation in 22 observatories of the Korean Meteorological Administration. The values calculated for the COMS and MTSAT MI sensors were smaller than the observation and showed low correlations of 0.94 and 0.93, respectively, which were smaller than the 0.96 correlation coefficient calculated for the GOCI sensor. The RMSEs of MTSAT, COMS MI and GOCI calculation results showed 2.21, 2.09, 2.02 MJ/$m^2$ in order. Comparison of the calculated daily accumulated results from the GOCI sensor with the observed data on the ground gave correlations and RMSEs for cloudy and sunny days of 0.96 and 0.86, and 1.82 MJ/$m^2$ and 2.27 MJ/$m^2$, respectively, indicating a slightly higher correlation for cloudy days. Compared to the meteorological imager, the geostationary ocean color imager in the COMS satellite has limited observation time and observation is not continuous. However, it has the advantage of providing high resolution so that it too can be useful for solar energy analysis.

Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) is one of the important components of optical properties of seawater to determine ecosystem dynamics in a given marine area. The optical characteristics of CDOM may depend on the various ecosystem and environmental variables in the sea and those variables may vary region to region. Therefore, the retrieval algorithm for determining light absorption coefficient of CDOM ($a_{CDOM}$) using satellite remote sensing reflectance ($R_{rs}$) developed from other region may not be directly applicable to the other region, and it must be validated using an in-situ ground-truth observation. We have tested 6 known CDOM algorithms (three Semi-analytical and three Empirical CDOM algorithms) developed from other regions of the world ocean with laboratory determined in-situ values for the East Sea using field data collected during seven oceanographic cruises in the period of 2009~2011. Our field measurements extended from the coastal waters to the open oceanic type CASE-1 Waters. Our study showed that Quasi-Analytical Algorithm (QAA_v5) derived $a_{CDOM}$(412) appears to match in-situ $a_{CDOM}$(412) values statistically. Semi-analytical algorithms appeared to underestimate and empirical ones overestimated $a_{CDOM}$ in the East Sea. $a_{CDOM}$(412) value was found to be relatively high in the relatively high satellite derived-chlorophyll-a area. $a_{CDOM}$(412) value appears to be influenced by the amount of chlorophyll-a in seawater. The outcome of this work may be referenced to develop $a_{CDOM}$ algorithm for the new Korean Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI).
Five institutions, which are very active in data utilization of environmental satellites NOAA and GMS, are connected via high speed networks to construct the databases based on the observations of A AVHRR (Advanced very High Resolution Radiometer) of NOAA satellite and VISSR (Visible and Infrared Scanning Radiometer) of GMS (Geostationary Meteorological Satellite) and to create scientific data sets for land, ocean and ,atmosphere. And vegetation index, sea surface temperature, cloud distribution maps and so on are generated by high speed and huge volume data Processing for studies on long term variations of land, ocean and atmosphere in Asia. In this paper the concept of this project and the activities at the Science University of Tokyo are briefly introduced
Ground processing for geostationary weather satellite such as GOES, MTSAT includes the process called image navigation. Image navigation means the retrieval of satellite navigational parameters from images and requires landmark detection by matching satellite images against landmark chips. For an automated preprocessing, a matching must be performed automatically. However, if match results contain errors, the accuracy of image navigation deteriorates. To overcome this problem, we propose the use of a robust estimation technique, called Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC), to automatically detect mismatches. We tested GOES-9 satellite images with 30 landmark chips. Landmark chips were extracted from the world shoreline database. To them, matching was applied and mismatch results were detected automatically by RANSAC. Results showed that all mismatches were detected correctly by RANSAC with a threshold value of 2.5 pixels.
