Since the operation of the first satellite-based navigation service, satellite positioning has played an increasing role in both surveying and geodesy, and has become an indispensable tool for precise relative positioning. However, in some situations, e.g. at a low angle of elevation, the use of satellites for navigation is seriously restricted because obstacles like buildings and mountains can block signals. As a mean to resolve this problem, the quasi-zenith satellite system has been proposed as a next-generation satellite navigation system. Quasi-zenith satellite is a system which simultaneously deploys several satellites in a quasi-zenith geostationary orbit so that one of the satellites always stay close to the zenith if viewed from a specific point on the ground of East Asia. Thus, if a position measurement function compatible with CPS is installed in the quasi-zenith and stationary satellites, and these satellites are utilized together with the CPS, four satellites can be accessed simultaneously nearly all day long and a substantial improvement in position measurement, especially in metropolitan areas, can be achieved. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of quasi-zenith satellite system on positioning accuracy improvement through simulation by using precise orbital information of the satellites and a three-dimensional digital map. Through this developed simulation system, it is possible to calculate the number of simultaneously visible satellites and available area for positioning without the need of actual observation. Furthermore, this system can calculate the Dilution Of Precision (DOP) and the error distribution.
If chlorophyll-a is estimated through ocean color remote sensing, it is able to understand the global distribution of phytoplankton and primary production. However, there are missing data in the ocean color observed from the satellites due to the clouds or weather conditions. In thisstudy, the missing data of the GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) chlorophyll-a product wasreconstructed by using DINEOF (Data INterpolation Empirical Orthogonal Functions). DINEOF reconstructs the missing data based on spatio-temporal data, and the accuracy was cross-verified by removing a part of the GOCI chlorophyll-a image and comparing it with the reconstructed image. In the study area, the optimal EOF (Empirical Orthogonal Functions) mode for DINEOF wasin 10-13. The temporal and spatialreconstructed data reflected the increasing chlorophyll-a concentration in the afternoon, and the noise of outliers was filtered. Therefore, it is expected that DINEOF is useful to reconstruct the missing images, also it is considered that it is able to use as basic data for monitoring the ocean environment.

Radiometric calibration is a fundamental step in ocean color remote sensing since the step to derive solar radiance spectrum in visible to near-infrared wavelengths from the sensor-observed electromagnetic signals. Generally, satellite sensor suffers from degradation over the mission period, which results in biases/uncertainties in radiometric calibration and the final ocean products such as water-leaving radiance, chlorophyll-a concentration, and colored dissolved organic matter. Therefore, the importance of radiometric calibration for the continuity of ocean color satellites has been emphasized internationally. This study introduces an approach to improve the radiometric calibration algorithm for the visible bands of the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager-II (GOCI-II) satellite with a focus on stability. Solar Diffuser (SD) measurements were employed as an on-orbit radiometric calibration reference, to obtain the continuous monitoring of absolute gain values. Time series analysis of GOCI-II absolute gains revealed seasonal variations depending on the azimuth angle, as well as long-term trends by possible sensor degradation effects. To resolve the complexities in gain variability, an azimuth angle correction model was developed to eliminate seasonal periodicity, and a sensor degradation correction model was applied to estimate nonlinear trends in the absolute gain parameters. The results demonstrate the effects of the azimuth angle correction and sensor degradation correction model on the spectrum of Top of Atmosphere (TOA) radiance, confirming the capability for improving the long-term stability of GOCI-II data.
Wildfires cause a lot of environmental and economic damage to the Earth over time. Various experiments have examined the harmful effects of wildfires. Also, studies for detecting wildfires and pollutant emissions using satellite remote sensing have been conducted for many years. The wildfire product for the Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), Korea's first environmental satellite sensor, has not been provided yet. In this study, a false-color composite for better expression of wildfire smoke was created from GEMS and used in a U-Net model for wildfire detection. Then, a classification model was constructed to distinguish yellow dust from the wildfire smoke candidate pixels. The proposed method can contribute to disaster monitoring using GEMS images.

Environment and climate changes affect all aspects of our society. The enhanced remote sensing technology made the satellite to be widely used in the environment monitoring applications. Geostationary environmental monitoring is also actively researched due to the increased needs for the monitoring of diurnal environmental changes, troposhperic pollution and its origin. In this paper, recent development trends of geostationary environment monitoring payloads are introduced. GEO-CAFE and GIFTS missions are researched by the leading of the NASA and Sentinel-4 by the ESA. Those missions are in the state of detailed conceptual design and hardware development preparing with the launch plan in the late 2010s. By considering these development trends, domestic environment monitoring payloads shall be developed with careful analysis on the mission and data application.
Wildfires release a large amount of greenhouse gases (GHGs) into the atmosphere. Fire radiative power (FRP) data obtained from geostationary satellites can play an important role for tracing the GHGs. This paper describes an estimation of the Himawari-8 FRP and fire emissions for Samcheock and Gangnueng wildfire in 6 May 2017. The FRP estimated using Himawari-8 well represented the temporal variability of the fire intensity, which cannot be captured by MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) because of its limited temporal resolution. Fire emissions calculated from the Himwari-8 FRP showed a very similar time-series pattern compared with the AirKorea observations, but 1 to 3 hour's time-lag existed because of the distance between the station and the wildfire location. The estimated emissions were also compared with those of a previous study which analyzed fire damages using high-resolution images. They almost coincided with 12% difference for Samcheock and 2% difference for Gangneung, demonstrating a reliability of the estimation of fire emissions using our Himawari-8 FRP without high-resolution images. This study can be a reference for estimating fire emissions using the current and forthcoming geostationary satellites in East Asia and can contribute to improving accuracy of meteorological products such as AOD (aerosol optical depth).
The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) data-processing system (GDPS), which is a software system for satellite data processing and analysis of the first geostationary ocean color observation satellite, has been developed concurrently with the development of th satellite. The GDPS has functions to generate level 2 and 3 oceanographic analytical data, from level 1B data that comprise the total radiance information, by programming a specialized atmospheric algorithm and oceanic analytical algorithms to the software module. The GDPS will be a multiversion system not only as a standard Korea Ocean Satellite Center(KOSC) operational system, but also as a basic GOCI data-processing system for researchers and other users. Additionally, the GDPS will be used to make the GOCI images available for distribution by satellite network, to calculate the lookup table for radiometric calibration coefficients, to divide/mosaic several region images, to analyze time-series satellite data. the developed GDPS system has satisfied the user requirement to complete data production within 30 minutes. This system is expected to be able to be an excellent tool for monitoring both long-term and short-term changes of ocean environmental characteristics.
In KORDI (Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute), the KOSC (Korea Ocean Satellite Center) construction project is being prepared for acquisition, processing and distribution of sensor data via L-band from GOCI (Geostationary Ocean Color Imager) instrument which is loaded on COMS (Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite); it will be launched in 2008. Ansan (the headquarter of KORDI) has been selected for the location of KOSC between 5 proposed sites, because it has the best condition to receive radio wave. The data acquisition system is classified into antenna and RF. Antenna is designed to be $\phi$ 9m cassegrain antenna which has 19.35 G/T$(dB/^{\circ}K)$ at 1.67GHz. RF module is divided into LNA (low noise amplifier) and down converter, those are designed to send only horizontal polarization to modem. The existing building is re-designed and arranged for the KOSC operation concept; computing room, board of electricity, data processing room, operation room. Hardware and network facilities have been designed to adapt for efficiency of each functions. The distribution system which is one of the most important systems will be constructed mainly on the internet. and it is also being considered constructing outer data distribution system as a web hosting service for offering received data to user less than an hour.
In this study, fused Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) data were produced using AOD products from the Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) onboard Communication, Oceanography and Meteorology Satellite (COMS)satellite and the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) onboard Himawari-8. Since the spatial resolution and the coordinate system between the satellite sensors are different, a preprocessing was first preceded. After that, using the level 1.5 AOD dataset of AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET), which is ground-based observation, correlations and trends between each satellite AOD and AERONET AOD were utilized to produce more accurate satellite AOD data than the originalsatellite AODs. The fused AOD were found to be more accurate than the originalsatellite AODs. Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and mean bias of the fused AODs were calculated to be 0.13 and 0.05, respectively. We also compared errors of the fused AODs against those of the original GOCI AOD (RMSE: 0.15, mean bias: 0.11) and the original AHI AOD (RMSE: 0.15, mean bias: 0.05). It was confirmed that the fused AODs have betterspatial coverage than the original AODsin areas where there are no observations due to the presence of cloud from a single satellite.
Geostationary Ocean Color Imager 2 (GOCI-II) on Geo-KOMPSAT-2 (GK2B)satellite was developed as a mission successor of GOCI on COMS which had been operated for around 10 years since launch in 2010 to observe and monitor ocean color around Korean peninsula. GOCI-II on GK2B was successfully launched in February of 2020 to continue for detection, monitoring, quantification, and prediction of short/long term changes of coastal ocean environment for marine science research and application purpose. GOCI-II had already finished IAC and IOT including early in-orbit calibration and had been handed over to NOSC (National Ocean Satellite Center) in KHOA (Korea Hydrographic and Oceanographic Agency). Radiometric calibration was periodically conducted using on-board solar calibration system in GOCI-II. The final calibrated gain and offset were applied and validated during IOT. And three video parameter sets for one day and 12 video parameter sets for a year was selected and transferred to NOSC for normal operation. Star measurement-based INR (Image Navigation and Registration) navigation filtering and landmark measurement-based image geometric correction were applied to meet the all INR requirements. The GOCI2 INR software was validated through INR IOT. In this paper, status and results of IOT, radiometric calibration and INR of GOCI-II are analysed and described.
