This paper is presented to solve the buckling problem of functionally graded truncated conical shells subjected to displacement-dependent pressure which remains normal to the shell middle surface throughout the deformation process by the semi-analytical finite strip method. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent, and varied continuously in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of a ceramic and metal. The governing equations are derived based on first-order shear deformation theory which accounts for through thickness shear flexibility with Sanders-type of kinematic nonlinearity. The element linear and geometric stiffness matrices are obtained using virtual work expression for functionally graded materials. The load stiffness also called pressure stiffness matrix which accounts for variation of load direction is derived for each strip and after assembling, global load stiffness matrix of the shell which may be un-symmetric is formed. The un-symmetric parts which are due to load non-uniformity and unconstrained boundaries have been separated. A detailed parametric study is carried out to quantify the effects of power-law index of functional graded material and shell geometry variations on the difference between follower and non-follower lateral buckling pressures. The results indicate that considering pressure stiffness which arises from follower action of pressure causes considerable reduction in estimating buckling pressure.
This work analyzes the effects of the independent variation of different geometric dimensions of compressor valves on the effective flow and force areas using a circular valve plate, such as different geometry of the valve seat, and the valve reed is opened and closed by pressure pulsation, the flow characteristic of the refrigerant passing the valve is very important. In the present study, a circular disk with inclination is assumed to be the valve reed of a reciprocating compressor and numerical analysis of three dimensional velocity fields are performed for theradial flow through the valve model. The effective flow and force area which are required to predict the efficiency of the valve are required to predict the efficiency of the valve are measured and compared with the numerical analysis in this research.
The combustion chamber and nozzle of an end burning, small spherical rocket is designed. A spherical external shape has a number of advantages such as fixed center-of-gravity and minimum aerodynamic precession torques during flight and a better mass distribution for gyro-stabilization as contrasted to a conventional ogive rocket shape. It is shown that the cross-sectional variation of the end burning solid propellant with length is an exponential geometry to provide a constant thrust-weight ratio of the rocket device during the propellant burning period, and that the factors which affect the attainment of the constant relationship of thrust to weight in the design are the initial propellant area, initial weight of the rocket and propellant density. The measurement of the transient thrust in the ground static test using black powder propellant supports the predicted results. A wind tunnel having a $30{\times}30{\times}75cm$ test section and Mach number 0.11 is constructed, and a simple balance-type device is designed for the measurement of the drag of a spinning sphere. The experimental results indicate that the. spinning has no effect on the magnitude of the drag up to the Reynolds number $3{\times}10^5$. Numerical computation of the flight trajectories for various launching angles is presented, and the gyro-stabilization of spinning sphere is discussed.
The flow characteristics of a swirl injector were investigated with the variation of the flow condition and geometric dimensions, such as orifice length for considering the viscous effect and tangential entry port area for considering the swirl intensity. The liquid film thickness strongly influencing on the formed drop size of the spray was measured using a new technique. The film thickness measurement technique proposed here, used the attenuation of fluorescence signal near the injector exit. The breakup length that is important for the flame location as well as the spray cone angle which influences on the ignition performance was measured using a backlit stroboscopic photography technique. From the experimental results, it is found that an increase in injection pressure decreased the film thickness and breakup length, and also enlarged the spray cone angle. A decrease in orifice length and tangential entry port area has a similar tendency of thinner film thickness, shorter breakup length and larger spray cone angle. In the present study, we proposed empirical models of the flow characteristics of the swirl injectors.
The radiance observed from the ocean depends on the illumination and viewing geometry along with the water properties, and this variation is called the bidirectional effect which is important to be considered in ocean color remote sensing. In the present study, as a preliminary step, the spectral-angular radiances in coastal water were investigated with experiments for a range of viewing geometric conditions $(0-70^{\circ})$. Over a phytoplankton-dominated water surface the upward radiance for visible and near-infrared wavelengths (example, SeaWiFS and GOCI) increased at nadir and decreased toward the near-horizon, becoming dependent of viewing angles (with higher radiance at nadir view angle and lower radiance at near-horizon viewing angle). This variations were better expressed by the Q-factor, which relates upwelling radiance to the upwelling irradiance (i.e., $Q=E_u/L_u$, also dependent on Sun's position). The Q-factor for this case was more non-uniform with the considered wavelengths and was dependent on viewing geometric conditions. These experimental results confirm the previous similar findings in other coastal waters.
In order to reduce weight of a high-speed railroad vehicle, the main body has been manufactured by hollow section extrusion using aluminum alloys. A porthole die has utilized for the hollow section extrusion process, which causes complicated die geometry and flow characteristics. Design of porthole die is very difficult due to such a complexity. The three-dimensional finite element analysis for hollow section is also an arduous job from the viewpoint of appropriate mesh construction and tremendous computation time. In the present work, mismatching refinement, an efficient domain decomposition method with different mesh density for each subdomain, is implemented for the analysis of the hollow section extrusion process. In addition, a modified grid-based approach with the surface element layer is utilized lot three-dimensional mesh generation of a complicated shape with hexahedral elements. The effects of porthole design are discussed through the simulation for extrusion of an underframe part of a railroad vehicle. An experiment has also been carried out for the comparison. Comparing the velocity distribution at the outlet with the thickness variation of the extruded part, it is concluded that the analysis results can provide reliable measures whether the die design is acceptable to obtain uniform part thickness. The analysis results are then successfully reflected on the industrial porthole die design.
This paper introduces a new approach to take account of bending history in finite element inverse analysis during sheet metal forming process. A modified membrane element was adopted for finite element inverse analysis so that bending-unbending energy was additionally imposed in the total plastic energy, predicting bending-unbending regions using the geometry of the final shape and tools. An algorithm was applied to a cylindrical cup deep drawing process. The blank shape and the distribution of the thickness strain were compared with those obtained from the incremental finite element analysis in order to evaluate the effect of the bending history. The algorithm reduced the difference between the results of the inverse analysis from those of the incremental analysis due to bending history. The analysis was also carried out with the variation of the thickness of the initial blank to investigate the effect of bending deformation. The results showed that the difference was remarkably reduced as the thickness of the initial blank increased. This indicates that the finite element inverse analysis cooperated with the suggested scheme is useful to obtain more accurate results, especially when bending effects are significant.
Usually, hydraulic cylinder is widely used as the actuator in the equipment of construction machines, airplane and military machines. In case of these devices, due to use under severe environment such as water, $SiO^2$ and dust, etc. seal which has high packing ability and long service life has been required. These characteristics are largely influenced by material and geometries of seal such as approach angle, withdrawal angle and interference. Recently, many a study about seal material has been performed so that many materials have been developed. But the concrete studies including the relationships between geometry of seal and sealing performance have hardly been performed yet. Therefore, in this study, we predicted the deformation behavior and contact normal distribution of dust seal with the variation of geometries of seal lip using finite element analysis. And based on the results of analyses, we discussed the effects of the design variables fur sealing performance of the dust seal.
Cold gas dynamic spray or cold spray is a novel manufacturing method for coatings. Cold spray is a high rate and direct material deposition process that utilizes the kinetic energy of particles sprayed at high velocity (300-1,200m/s). In this research, a technique to repair the damaged mold by cold spray deposition and mechanical machining was proposed. An aluminum 6061 mold with three-dimensional surface was fabricated, intentionally damaged and material-added by cold spray, and its original geometry was re-obtained successfully by Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining. To investigate deformation of material caused by cold spray, deposition was conducted on thin aluminum plates ($100mm{\times}100mm{\times}3mm$). The average deformation of the plates was $205{\sim}290{\mu}m$ by Coordinate Measurement Machine (CMM). In addition, the cross section of deposited layer was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To compare variation of hardness, Vickers hardness was measured by micro-hardness tester.
The structure of satellite consists of six parts which are control system, power system, thermal control system, remote measurement command system, propellant system and thrust system. In these parts, propellant system consists of propellant tank and thrust device. What we want to perform is optimum design to minimize the weight of propellant tank. In order to design optimal propellant tank, several parameters should be adopted from the tank geometry like the relative location of the lug and variation of the wall thickness. The analysis was executed by finite element analysis for finding optimal design parameters. The structure was divided into three parts consisting of the initial thickness zone, the transitional Bone, and the weak zone, whose effects on the pressure vessel strength was investigated. Finally the optimal lug location and the three zone thickness were obtained and the weight was compared with the uniform thickness vessel.
