  • In this paper, stability analysis is carried out for the out of plane behaviors under compressive loads to the direction of the generator in anisotropic cylindrical shells. It is not easy to obtain the analytic solutions about the stability analysis of anisotropic cylindrical shells consisted of composite materials. For solving this problems, this paper used the finite difference method which is one of the numerical methods. Geometrical property of cylindrical shells transforms the compressive loads into the inplane behaviors. This paper studied the change of stiffness in the direction of the circumferential and stability of shells according to change of fiber angle, curvature, subtended angle and aspect ratio. From result of this study, anisotropic cylindrical shells under compressive loads to the direction of the generator vary greatly with respect to the change of the circumferential stiffness. Therefore, it will be more safe to strengthen the circumferential stiffness of anisotropic cylindrical shells under compressive loads.

  • Double split tee connection has various strength, stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity according to changes of thickness of T-stub flange and gauge distance, number, and diameter of high-strength bolt. If the double split tee connection is applied to a low- or medium-rise steel structure, a shear tab can't be applied for supporting shear force because of geometrical limitation. So it is required to propose details of improved double split tee connection to support shear force as well as flexural force. This research was performed to see if enough rotational stiffness is found when the double split tee connection without shear tab which was obtained through analytic and experimental researches by Yang et al. is applied to a low- or medium-rise steel structure. Also, it was seen if the low- or medium-rise steel structure having double split tee connection without shear tab has safe structural behavior, as well as material saving effect.

  • The paper presents the study on a change in modal parameters and structural stiffness of cable-stayed Fiberline Bridge made entirely of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composite used for 20 years in the fjord area of Kolding, Denmark. Due to this specific location the bridge structure was subjected to natural aging in harsh environmental conditions. The flexural properties of the pultruded GFRP profiles acquired from the analyzed footbridge in 1997 and 2012 were determined through three-point bending tests. It was found that the Young's modulus increased by approximately 9%. Moreover, the influence of the temperature on the storage and loss modulus of GFRP material acquired from the Fiberline Bridge was studied by the dynamic mechanical analysis. The good thermal stability in potential real temperatures was found. The natural vibration frequencies and mode shapes of the bridge for its original state were evaluated through the application of the Finite Element (FE) method. The initial FE model was created using the real geometrical and material data obtained from both the design data and flexural test results performed in 1997 for the intact composite GFRP material. Full scale experimental investigations of the free-decay response under human jumping for the experimental state were carried out applying accelerometers. Seven natural frequencies, corresponding mode shapes and damping ratios were identified. The numerical and experimental results were compared. Based on the difference in the fundamental natural frequency it was again confirmed that the structural stiffness of the bridge increased by about 9% after 20 years of service life. Data collected from this study were used to validate the assumed FE model. It can be concluded that the updated FE model accurately reproduces the dynamic behavior of the bridge and can be used as a proper baseline model for the long-term monitoring to evaluate the overall structural response under service loads. The obtained results provided a relevant data for the structural health monitoring of all-GFRP bridge.

  • Geometrical non-linearity due to the flexibility of cables must be considered efficiently in the dynamic analysis of cable structures. In this paper, formulation of tangent stiffness matrix of elastic catenary cable is derived by using relative nodal displacements, self-weight and unstressed cable length. Free vibration analysis of simply supported cable using elastic catenary cable elements is conducted and compared with that using truss elements. The result shows that elastic catenary cable elements are more compatible than truss elements in the case of analysis of cable structures. Furthermore, the characteristic of dynamic behaviors of cable structures by temporary unstability phenomenon is confirmed.

  • In order to reduce the booming noise caused by first bending mode of a drive shaft, this paper proposes a simulation program for prediction of the bending mode frequency of any tubular shaft. This program consists of a pre-processor for modeling of geometrical shape of the drive shaft with boundary conditions of various joints, a processor for constructing of global finite element matrices using beam elements and an eigen-solver based on MATLAB program. Using this simulation program, the effective and accurate FE model far a shaft attached to vehicle can be obtained by aid of database for stiffness of each joint. Thus the resonance frequencies and mode shapes of a shaft can be calculated accurately. Because the effect of the resonance on interior noise can be verified, more improved shaft will be proposed at the early stage of design.

  • Sandwich sheet with inner structure is expected to find many applications because of high stiffness to mass ratio. However, low resistance to the compressive pressure in the thickness direction is a dominating factor in the formability of sandwich sheet. In this study, sandwich sheet with pyramid type core is considered. For the compressive characteristics in the thickness direction, experiments and finite element simulations are carried out. In the experiment, deformation behavior is observed and discussed as the compression proceeds. It is shown that a corresponding finite element simulation can give a reasonable agreement with experiment in terms of maximum pressure. However, simulation shows some discrepancy from the experiment in terms of compressive pressure-displacement characteristics. The reasons for this discrepancy are studied in the geometrical imperfectness of sandwich sheet. It is also observed that most of deformation is dominated by buckling mode of pyramid legs.

  • In this paper, two dimensional vertical and comer infinite elements which can include multiple wave components to model underlying half space are developed. These elements are natural and economical to model underlying stiff half space or rock. To verify the behavior of these infinite elements, vertical, horizontal, and rocking compliances of a rigid strip foundation on a viscoelastic soil profile are analyzed and compared with those of Tzong and Penzien who used the boundary solution method. Good agreements are noticed between the two methods. The influence of material properties like Poisson's ratio, material damping, and stiffness ratio of layers as well as the influence of geometrical properties such as layer thicknesses and depth of foundation embedment are studied. Example analysis is carried out for the shaking table which is located in KIMM(Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials), and the vertical and horizontal displacements of the analysis are compared with the measured, and show good results and demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • Sandwich panel with inner structure is expected to find many applications because of high stiffness to mass ratio. However, low resistance to the pressure in the thickness direction may become a weak point in the forming process. Two pyramid type designs for inner structure are considered. For the resistance characteristics in the thickness direction, finite element simulations are carried out. For one design, experimental results are provided. It is shown that simulation can give a reasonable agreement with experiment. The reasons for the discrepancy are discussed mainly in the geometrical viewpoint. It is observed that most of deformation depends on bending mode. Two designs are compared using simulation.

  • Bender elements, composed of thin piezo-ceramics and elastic shims, have been used to measure shear wave velocities of specimens in laboratories. In a preliminary stage of their field applications, an in-house research of optimizing suitable bender elements and geometrical arrangement has been carried out in a barrel of kaolinite-water mixture. Two types of measurement configuration, similar to cross-hole and in-hole seismic testing, has been implemented. A pair of prototype instrumented rods was penetrated into a soft clay layer in the west coast and excellent shear waves were recorded. Development of penetration device(mandrel) and associated instrumented rods are in progress for deeper investigation.
