  • In this paper we describe techniques for the automated creation of geometric correct 3-D models of the building using two 2-D laser scanners. One of the laser scanners is used for position estimation using a scan matching algorithm, while the other is used to build 3-D models of the facade of the buildings. Those models can be used for virtual reality, tele-presence, digital cinematography and urban planning applications. Results are shown for building models in our campus using real data acquired from two sensors.

  • Path planning algorithms are used to allow mobile robots to avoid obstacles and find ways from a start point to a target point. The general path planning algorithm focused on constructing of collision free path. However, a high continuous path can make smooth and efficiently movements. To improve the continuity of the path, the searched waypoints are connected by the proposed polynomial interpolation. The existing polynomial interpolation methods connect two points. In this paper, point groups are created with three points. The point groups have each polynomial. Polynomials are made by matching the differential values and simple matrix calculation. Membership functions are used to distribute the weight of each polynomial at overlapped sections. As a result, the path has $G^2$ continuity. In addition, the proposed method can analyze path numerically to obtain curvature and heading angle. Moreover, it does not require complex calculation and databases to save the created path.

  • This paper presents a method for facial feature representation and recognition from the Covariance Matrices of the Gabor-filtered images. Gabor filters are a very powerful tool for processing images that respond to different local orientations and wave numbers around points of interest, especially on the local features on the face. This is a very unique attribute needed to extract special features around the facial components like eyebrows, eyes, mouth and nose. The Covariance matrices computed on Gabor filtered faces are adopted as the feature representation for face recognition. Geodesic distance measure is used as a matching measure and is preferred for its global consistency over other methods. Geodesic measure takes into consideration the position of the data points in addition to the geometric structure of given face images. The proposed method is invariant and robust under rotation, pose, or boundary distortion. Tests run on random images and also on publicly available JAFFE and FRAV3D face recognition databases provide impressively high percentage of recognition.

  • This paper prsents a new method that automatically recognizes the dimension lines (consisting of shape lines, tail lines and extension lines) from the mechanical drawings. In the proposed method, the object and closed-loop symbols are separated from the character-free drawings. Then the object lines and interpretation lines are vectorized by using several techniques such as thinning, line-vectorization, and vector-clustering. Finally, after recognizing arrowheads by using pattern matching, we recognize dimension lines from interpretation lines by using arrohead's directional vector and centroid. By using the methods of geometric modeling and mathematical operation, the proposed method readility recognizes the dimension lines from complex drawings. Experimental resuls are presented, which are obtained by applying the proposed method to drawings drawn in compliance with the KS drafting standard.

  • Curved 3D objects represented by range data contain large amounts of information compared with planar objects, but do not have distinct features for matching to those of object models. This makes it difficult to represent and identify a general 3D curved object. This paper introduces a new approach to representing and finding a holdsite of general 3D curved objects using range data. We develop a three-dimensional generalized Hough transformation which can be also applied to general 3D curved object recognition and which reduces both the computation time and storage requirements. Our approach makes use of the relative geometric differences between particular points on the object surface and some model points which are prespecified arbitrarily and task dependently.

  • This paper deals with the development of an intelligent CAD system for specifying the operation sequence in cold forging. Cold forging technology is facing with various new design requirements. Therefore, it is very important to develop a decision method for the operation sequence, with comparatively high adaptability to the new requirements. An intelligent CAD system which is the uncertain factors in human knowledge into consideration by applying fuzzy theory is established. Various actual design data about were organized, and these organized data were applied to the system as the case base. The system automatically generates the design data of operation sequence such as the forming method and the geometric data of products in each operation stage by the reasoning method applied the fuzzy pattern matching. By comparing the design results in the above system with the actual design data of a human expert, this paper presents that our method is useful for practical application.

  • This study proposes the method to use existing digital maps as one of the technologies to exclude individual differences that occur in the process of manually determining GCP for the geometric correction of KOMPSAT images and applying it to the images and to automate the generation of ortho-images. It is known that, in case high-resolution satellite images are corrected geometrically by using RPC, first order polynomials are generally applied as the correction formula in order to obtain good results. In this study, we matched the corresponding objects between 1:25,000 digital map and a KOMPSAT image to obtain the coefficients of the zero order polynomial and showed the differences in the pixel locations obtained through the matching. We performed proximity corrections using the Boolean operation between the point data of the surface linear objects and the point data of the edge objects of the image. The surface linear objects are road, water, building from topographic map.

  • The scanning electron microscope (SEM) offers two-dimensional (2D) micrographs of three-dimensional (3D) objects due to its inherent operating mechanisms. To overcome this limitation, other devices have been used for quantitative morphological analysis. Many efforts have been made on the applications of software-based approaches to 3D reconstruction and measurements by SEM. Based on the acquisition of two stereo images, a multi-view technique consists of two parts: (i) geometric calibration and (ii) image matching. Quantitative morphological parameters such as height and depth could be nondestructively measured by SEM combined with special software programs. It is also possible to obtain conventional surface parameters such as roughness and volume of biomedical specimens through 3D SEM surface reconstruction. There is growing evidence that conventional 2D SEM without special electron detectors can be transformed to 3D SEM for quantitative measurements in biomedical research.

  • This paper consider's the problem of exploring an unfamiliar environment in search of recognizable objects of visual landmarks. In order to extract and recognize them automatically, a feature map is constructed which records the set of features continually during a learning phase. The map contains photometric geometric, and metric information of each feature. Meanwhile, the localization algorithm can determine the position of the robot by extracting features and matching in the map. These procedures are implemented and tested using an AMR, and preliminary results are presented in this paper.
