  • The block assembly of ship consists of a certain type of heat processes such as cutting, bending, welding, residual stress relaxation and fairing. The residual deformation due to welding is inevitable at each assembly stage. The geometric inaccuracy caused by the welding deformation tends to preclude the introduction of automation and mechanization and needs the additional man-hours for the adjusting work at the following assembly stage. To overcome this problem, a distortion control method should be applied. For this purpose, it is necessary to develop an accurate prediction method which can explicitly account for the influence of various factors on the welding deformation. Systematic and quantitative theoretical works to clarify the effects of various factors on the welding deformation have rarely been found. Therefore, in this paper, the effects of various factors, such as welding process and gravity on the butt welding deformation have been investigated through a number of numerical analyses. In addition, this paper proposes a simplified analysis method to predict the butt welding deformation in actual plate structure. For this purpose, a simple prediction model for butt welding deformations has been derived based on numerical and experimental results through the regression analysis. Based on these results, the simplified analysis method has been applied to some examples to show its validity.

  • We developed new quadtree and octree representation schemes which reduce the storage requirements from exponential to polynomial. The new schemes not only lessen the large storage requirements of the existing quadtree and octree representation schemes but guarantee an exact representation of the original object. These are made possible by adopting a new set of termination conditions that ensure finiteness of the quadtree and octree during the decomposition. These new data structures are analyzed theoretically and tested empirically. For space complexity, we analyzed its best case, worst case, and average case. Given an $n_e$-gon, we show that the expected number of nodes in our quadtree isO($$$n_e^1.292$) For a polyhedron with $n_f$ faces, the expected number of nodes in the new octree is O($$$n_f^1.667$). For time complexity, we again analyzed the best, worst, and average cases for constructing such quadtree and octree and find the average to be the same as those of the space complexity. Finally, random $n_e$- gons are generated as test data. Regression equations are fitted and are shown to support the claims on the average case performance.

  • The compression of CAD models is a key technology for realizing Internet-based collaborative product development because big model sizes often prohibit us to achieve a rapid product information transmission. Although there exist some algorithms for compressing discrete CAD models, original precise CAD models are focused on in this paper. Here, the characteristics of hierarchical structures in CAD models and the distribution of their redundant data are exploited for developing a novel data encoding method. In the method, different encoding rules are applied to different types of data. Geometric data is a major concern for reducing model sizes. For geometric data, the control points of B-spline curves and surfaces are compressed with the second-order predictions in a local coordinate system. Based on analysis to the distortion induced by quantization, an efficient method for computation of the distortion is provided. The results indicate that the data size of CAD models can be decreased efficiently after compressed with the proposed method.

  • $Premi\grave{e}re$ Vision is a leading textile collection held since 1973. In this study, textiles for 2004/05 F/W season in $Premi\grave{e}re$ Vision were analyzed at the various point of view, such as general trend, sub-theme, fiber content, color trend, structure, yarn trend, pattern, texture, decoration, finishing and other technical treatment, and functionality. There were three general trends; natural/ecology, geometry, and combination. Natural color and texture were widely used over the fabric exhibited, and irregularities expressed the natural trend of textiles. Geometric patterns were used for knit as well as for woven. Geometry expressed by various methods such as weaving, knitting, printing, shearing, embossing, and etc. However, geometry shown in this season was not a clear form expressed by weaving, but a blurry, irregular form expressed by various other methods such as knitting. The combination among heterogeneous fibers, yarns, colors, images, and textures was usual, however, the harmony among them was accomplished.

  • This paper proposes a robust watermarking scheme for GIS digital map by using the geometric properties of polyline and polygon, which are the fundamental components in vector data structure. In the proposed scheme, we calculate the lengths and the perimeters of all polylines and polygons in a map and cluster them to a number of groups. Then we embed the binary watermark by changing the mean of lengths and perimeters in an embedding group. For improving the safety and robustness, we permute the binary watermark through PRNS(pseudo-random number sequence) processing and embed it repeatedly in a model. Experimental results verified that our scheme has a good invisibility, safety and robustness to various geometric attacks and also our scheme needs not the original map in the extracting process of watermark.

  • As the finite element method has become a considerable and effective design tool in ship structural analysis, modeling of three dimensional finite element mesh is more necessary than before. However, the unique style and complexity of a ship usually make the modeling be hard and costly. Although most pre-processor of FEM software and geometric modeler provides modeling function, the capability is quite limited for complicated structure. In order to perform FEM modeling quickly, it is necessary to extract, rearrange, and formalize data from ship design database for partially automatic mesh generation. In this paper, the process of designing relational data tables from design data is shown as a part of analysis automation with the application of engineering database concept.

  • After long-term service in deep ocean, pipelines are usually suffered from corrosions, which may greatly influence the Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) behavior of pipes. Thus, we investigate the VIV of defective pipelines. The geometric nonlinearity due to large deformation of pipes and nonlinearity in vortex-induced force are simulated. This nonlinear vibration system is simulated with finite element method and solved by direct integration method with incremental algorithm. Two kinds of defects, corrosion pits and volumetric flaws, and their effects of depth and range on VIV responses are investigated. A new finite element is developed to simulate corrosion pits. Defects are found to aggravate VIV displacement response only if environmental flow rate is less than resonance flow rate. As the defect depth grows, the stress responses increase, however, the increase of the defect range reduces the stress response at corroded part. The volumetric flaws affect VIV response stronger than the corrosion pits.

  • The automatic algorithm optimized for the Korean Peninsula was developed to detect and track the center of typhoon based on a geometrical method using high-resolution retrieved WISSDOM (WInd Syntheses System using DOppler Measurements) wind and reflectivity data. This algorithm analyzes the center of typhoon by detecting the geometric circular structure of the typhoon's eye in radar reflectivity and vorticity 2D field data. For optimizing the algorithm, the main factors of the algorithm were selected and the optimal thresholds were determined through sensitivity experiments for each factor. The center of typhoon was detected for 5 typhoon cases that approached or landed on Korean Peninsula. The performance was verified by comparing and analyzing from the best track of Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA). The detection rate for vorticity use was 15% higher on average than that for reflectivity use. The detection rate for vorticity use was up to 90% for DIANMU case in 2010. The difference between the detected locations and best tracks of KMA was 0.2° on average when using reflectivity and vorticity. After the optimization, the detection rate was improved overall, especially the detection rate more increased when using reflectivity than using vorticity. And the difference of location was reduced to 0.18° on average, increasing the accuracy.

  • This study is concerned with the shape optimization of structural members frequently found in critical area in a structure system, that is, highly stressed zone. Isogeometry analysis is well known to be the very efficient way to integrate the geometric modeling(CAD) and computational analysis(CAE). This can be accomplished by directly using the geometric modeling by NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational Basis Spline). In this study, an efficient computer code adopting the isogeometry concept has been developed for the structural analysis, in which CAD information can be directly used in the finite element modeling. In order to show the validity of the present code, the present results are compared with those by using the commercial package, that is, MSC/NASTRAN. The present isogeometric analysis procedure has been integrated with the optimization procedure to deal with the optimization problem found in the context of structural mechanics. The present system has been successfully applied to the shape optimization of cantilever structure having bracket. From the present study, it can be seen the validity of the present approach and computer codes developed in this study. This paper ends with some discussions about the practical usefulness of the present approach which is based on isogeometry analysis, and extension of the present study.

  • SiC(3C) photodiodes (PDs) were fabricated on p-type Si(111) substrates using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique by pyrolyzing tetramethylsilane (TMS) with $H_{2}$ carrier gas. Electrical properties of SiC(3C) were investigated by Hall measurement and current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. SiC(3C) layers exhibited n-type conductivity. Ohmic contact was formed by thermal evaporation Al metal through a shadow-mask. The optical gain $(G_{op})$ of the SiC(3C)/Si PD was measured as a function of the incident wavelength. For the analysis of the photovoltaic detection of the Sic(3C) n/p PD, the spectral response (SR) has calculated by using the electrical parameters of the SiC(3C) layer and the geometric structure of the PD. The peak response calculated for properly chosen parameters was about 0.75 near 550 nm. We expect a good photoresponse in the SiC(3C) heterostructure for the wavelength range of 400~600 nm. The SiC(3C) photodiode can detect blue and near ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
