  • In mold structure machining, tool interference is a phenomenon which results from a collision between a blade of tool and a workpiece. Also tool collision is a phenomenon which results from a collision of holder with the object to be machined. These phenomena not only cause damages to mold and tool but also increase machining time and cost. To detect a collision of a tool to mold structure, first of all, the mold structure and a tool must be defined with famous geometric models such CSG, B-rep, and Voxel. A tool is defined as a combination of the blade, the shank, and the holder. This thesis reviews various collision detection algorithms using z-map and computer 3D graphic collision detection algorithms for the tool in machining a mold structure.

  • Based on the authors' previous work, where a geometric constraint handling technique for stiffener layout optimization problem using geometry algorithms was proposed, stiffener layout optimization to maximize natural frequencies of a curved three-dimensional shell structure was performed with a projection method. The original geometry of the shell structure was first projected on a two-dimensional plane, and then the whole optimization process was performed with the projected geometry of the shell except that the original shell structure was used for the eigenproblem solving. The projection method can be applied to baseline structures with a one-to-one correspondence between original and projected geometries such as automobile hoods and roofs.

  • For application to drag-based propulsion system, the dynamics of a segmented structure with multiple hinges undergoing oscillatory motion are investigated. The side flaps are connected to a centre rod with elastic plates acting as hinges. The hinges bend to only one direction so that the structure behave asymmetrically between the power stroke and the recovery stroke. An analytical model is proposed, which estimates the asymmetric deformation of the segmented structure coupled with hinges. Using the proposed model, the effects of key geometric and kinematic parameters on the dynamics of the structure are analyzed.

  • For large-scale 5MW offshore wind turbines, the discrete equation of fluid domain and the motion equation of structural domain with geometric nonlinearity were built, the three-dimensional modeling of the blade considering fluid-structure interaction (FSI) was achieved by using Unigraphics (UG) and Geometry modules, and the numerical simulation and the analysis of the vibration characteristics for wind turbine structure under rotating effect were carried out based on ANSYS software. The results indicate that the rotating effect has an apparent effect on displacement and Von Mises stress, and the response and the distribution of displacement and Von Mises stress for the blade in direction of wingspan increase nonlinearly with the equal increase of rotational speeds. Compared with the single blade model, the blade vibration period of the whole machine model is much longer. The structural coupling effect reduces the response peak value of the blade displacement and Von Mises stress, and the increase of rotational speed enhances this coupling effect. The maximum displacement difference between two models decreases first and then increases along wingspan direction, the trend is more visible with the equal increase of rotational speed, and the boundary point with zero displacement difference moves towards the blade root. Furthermore, the Von Mises stress difference increases gradually with the increase of rotational speed and decreases nonlinearly from the blade middle to both sides. The results can provide technical reference for the safe operation and optimal design of offshore wind turbines.

  • In this paper, we propose an growing and pruning algorithm to design the adaptive structure of modular wavelet neural network(MWNN) with F-projection and geometric growing criterion. Geometric growing criterion consists of estimated error criterion considering local error and angel criterion which attempts to assign wavelet function that is nearly orthogonal to all other existing wavelet functions. There criteria provide a methodology that a network designer can constructs wavelet neural network according to one s intention. The proposed growing algorithm grows the module and the size of modules. Also, the pruning algorithm eliminates unnecessary node of module or module from constructed MWNN to overcome the problem due to localized characteristics of wavelet neural network which is used to modules of MWNN. We apply the proposed constructing algorithm of the adaptive structure of MWNN to approximation problems of 1-D function and 2-D function, and evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

  • The purpose of CIM for shipbuilding should be focused on the efficient processing of information among design, process planning and scheduling activities. The most essential technology for shipbuilding CIM is the product model. This model should not only define a physical product "ship" but also a process "ship production". Major activity for ship production is assembly, which requires intensive use of the relationships among parts of ship structure. Other production information are painting area. shape. weight, etc. The fact that major ship structure is "stiffened-plate" type, which allows us to handle the plate thickness as non-geometric information for practical purpose. Therefore. the geometric model for ship product model should handle the relationship among parts(so called topology) efficiently. We find that a face oriented non manifold data structure can meet this requirement. We apply this non-manifold data structure to the ship compartmentation, structural design, and assembly.

  • The update of a high-precision map was carried out by modifying the geometric information using ortho-images or point-cloud data as the source data and then reconstructing the relationship between the spatial objects. These series of processes take considerable time to process the geometric information, making it difficult to apply real-time route planning to a vehicle quickly. Therefore, this study proposed a method to update the road network for route planning using a graph data structure and storage type of graph data structure considering the characteristics of the road network. The proposed method was also reviewed to assess the feasibility of real-time route information transmission by applying it to actual road data.

  • We consider a point robot in the plane whose turning radius is constrained to be at least 1 and that is not allowed to make reversals. Given a starting configuration(a location and an orientation) for the robot, we give a new geometric proof on the combinatorial structure of curvature-constrained shortest paths to a final point with free orientation.

  • Determining of the shape in the process of design for natural draught cooling tower is very important, because the shape of hyperbolic shell is respond sensitively to dynamic behavior of the whole cooling tower against wind load. In engineering practice, the geometric parameters have been determining based on the natural frequency. This study analyses influence of the tower shell geometric parameters on the structural behavior. For three representative models were selected, they were analyzed based on evaluation of damage by means of nonlinear FE-method. As a result, a hyperbolic rotational shell with the small radius overall was the lowest damage index induced by sufficient capacity of the stress redistribution and thus a wind-insensitive structure.

  • Geometric manipulation of molecules is an essential elementary component in computational modeling programs for molecular structure, stability, dynamics, and design. The computational complexity of transformation of internal coordinates to Cartesian coordinates was discussed before.1 The use of rotation matrices was found to be slightly more efficient than that of quaternion although quaternion operators have been widely advertised for rotational operations, especially in molecular dynamics simulations of liquids where the orientation is a dynamical variable.2 The discussion on computational efficiency is extended here to a more general case in which bond angles and sidechain torsion angles are allowed to vary. The algorithm of Thompson3 is derived again in terms of quaternions as well as rotation matrices, and an algorithm with optimal efficiency is described. The algorithm based on rotation matrices is again found to be slightly more efficient than that based on quaternions.
