  • The GMS geometric correction method with highspeed and high accuracy is needed. In this paper, a selection method of residual errors for the GMS geometric correction using GCPs (ground control points) is described. Namely, it is a technique for limiting the number of residual error acquisition using GCPs in each block to reduce the processing time. As the result, since the processing time was about 7.0 minutes on conventional geometric correction and about 5.6 minutes on the proposed method, it was shown that the processing time of about 1.4 minutes was shortened.

  • In this study, a measurement method of double ball-bar is proposed to measure the geometric errors of an ultra-precision roll mold machine tool. A volumetric error model of the machine tool is established to investigate the effects of the geometric errors to a radius error and a cylindricity of the roll mold. A measurement path is suggested for the geometric errors, and a ball-bar equation is derived to represent the relation between the geometric errors and a measured data of the double ball-bar. Set-up errors, which are inevitable at the double ball-bar installation, also are analyzed and are removed mathematically for the measurement accuracy. In addition, standard uncertainty of the measured geometric errors is analyzed to determine the experimental condition. Finally, the proposed method is tested and verified through simulation.

  • The topographic volume estimation is carried out for the earth work of a construction site and quarry excavation monitoring. The topographic surveying using instruments such as engineering levels, total stations, and GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) receivers have traditionally been used and the photogrammetric approach using drone systems has recently been introduced. However, these methods cannot be adopted for inaccessible areas where high resolution satellite images can be an alternative. We carried out experiments using Kompsat-3/3A data to estimate topographic volume for a quarry and checked the accuracy. We generated DEMs (Digital Elevation Model) using newly acquired Kompsat-3/3A data and checked the accuracy of the topographic volume estimation by comparing them to a reference DEM generated by timely operating a drone system. The experimental results showed that geometric differences between stereo images significantly lower the quality of the volume estimation. The tested Kompsat-3 data showed one meter level of elevation accuracy with the volume estimation error less than 1% while the tested Kompsat-3A data showed lower results because of the large geometric difference.

  • This paper proposes an error compensation method that improves accuracy with geometry information of injection molding parts. Geometric information can give an improved accuracy in reverse engineering. Measuring data can not lead to get accurate geometric model, including errors of physical parts and measuring machines. Measuring data include errors which can be classified into two types. One is molding error in product, the other is measuring error. Measuring error includes optical error of laser scanner, deformation by probe forces of CMM and machine error. It is important to compensate these in reverse engineering. Least square method (LSM) provides the cloud data with a geometry compensation, improving accuracy of geometry. Also, the functional shape of a part and design concept can be reconstructed by error compensation using geometry information.

  • Generally, it is very difficult to inspect geometric shape of large 2D objects after machining. To maintain the accuracy for inspection, a robot vision is used to divide overall shape into several enlarged images, and image processing technique is applied to acquire one minute geometric contour. The inspection is to compare the NC data with the measured contour data by the vision system, and the algorithm is to rotate to minimize the maximum deviation coinciding two geometric centers. This paper experimentally shows that the proposed inspection algorithm is very useful fur a large machined object.

  • This paper focuses on a number of criteria that enable controlling the influence of geometric simplification on the quality of finite element (FE) computations. To perform the mechanical simulation of a component, the corresponding geometric model typically needs to be simplified in accordance with hypotheses adopted regarding the component's mechanical behaviour. The method presented herein serves to compute an a posteriori indicator for the purpose of estimating the significance of each feature removal. This method can be used as part of an adaptive process of geometric simplification. If a shape detail removed during the shape simplification process proves to be influential on mechanical behaviour, the particular detail can then be reinserted into the simplified model, thus making it possible to readapt the initial simulation model. The fields of application for such a method are: static problems involving linear elastic behaviour, and linear thermal problems with stationary conduction.

  • In this study, geometric modeling techniques and their application to ship modeling and design are presented. Traditionally the hull shape is defined by using curves called the lines and various necessary computations are performed based on the discrete points obtained from the lines. However, some applications find difficulty in using the lines such as seakeeping analysis, which requires the computation of wetted part that is changing dynamically over time. To overcome such a problem and increase accuracy and efficiency in computation, two essential geometric modeling techniques, surface modeling and surface-to-surface intersection, are introduced and their application to ship modeling and analysis including hydrostatic computation, slamming and seakeeping analyses is presented.

  • This paper deals with a geometric error simulator, measurement and inspection of workpiece errors on the machine tools, and identification and compensation methodology of thermal errors in machining centers. In order to raise the machining accuracy of workpieces a measurement and inspection system on the machine tool is developed. By using MPPGT module Manual and CNC type CMMs are realized on the machining centers. To compensate for geometric and thermal deformation errors of machining centers, a real time and an off line geometric adaptive control system were developed on the machining centers. A vertical and a horizontal machining center equipped with FANUC 0MC were used for experiments. Performance of the systems were confirmed with a large amount of experiment.
