Thermal properties of geomaterial are overlooked with other geomechanical properties. The transient line-source (TLS) method is one of the most used testing methods for measuring the thermal conductivity (K) and thermal diffusivity ($\alpha$) of materials. But more recently, Transient Plane-Source method was developed to measure these. It has several advantage of comparing with TSL method, but there has not been documented application in geomaterial. A Resistance Temperature Detector is used to construct sensor. For durability of Probe, Adopt a new technique that two probes are bonded in exact matching. For standard materials, such as glycerin, and ice the measured K and a values of these materials were generally within 2-5% from the standard values in the literature. This document present to evaluate the thermal properties of geomaterials and its application was tested for varying degree of saturation using the Transient Plane Source method. The result of this study suggests that it is an comparatively accurate method for simultaneously measuring thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity and can identify the feasibility to geomaterial.
A variety of in-situ geotechnical investigation methods are currently used to measure the properties of each site, but in-situ tests for "Intermediate Geomaterial (IGM)", which is the transitional geomaterial between soil and rock, have only limited application. In the United States, "The Texas Cone Penetrometer Test (TCPT)", which is the geotechnical investigation technology for IGM, is utilized to create foundation designs. This paper introduces "The Driving Cone Penetrometer Test (DCPT)", which can be performed using general geotechnical investigation equipment and also analyzes the correlation between various in-situ geotechnical investigation methods by applying DCPT on the ground. The results showed that the correlation between the driving cone penetrometer test (DCPT) and standard penetration test (SPT) was quite high. Additionally, the scope of DCPT properties was wide, depending on soil types.
An analytical algorithm for the estimation of the resistance forces exerted on the dipper of a cable shovel and the specific energy consumed in the cutting-loading process is presented. Forces due to payload and to cutting of geomaterials under given initial conditions, cutting trajectory of the bucket, bucket's design, and geomaterial properties are analytically computed. The excavation process has been modeled by means of a kinematical shovel model, as well as of dynamic payload and cutting resistance models. For the calculation of the cutting forces, a logsandwich passive failure mechanism of the geomaterial is considered, as has been found by considering that a slip surface propagates like a mixed mode crack. Subsequently, the Upper-Bound theorem of Limit Analysis Theory is applied for the approximate calculation of the maximum reacting forces exerted on the dipper of the cable shovel. This algorithm has been implemented into an Excel$^{TM}$ spreadsheet to facilitate user-friendly, "transparent" calculations and built-in data analysis techniques. Its use is demonstrated with a realistic application of a medium-sized shovel. It was found, among others, that the specific energy of cutting exhibits a size effect, such that it decreases as the (-1)-power of the cutting depth for the considered example application.
In Korea, none of the design methods, which can consider the properties of hard soil, weathered rock and the condition of construction, are suggested. Therefore, the properties of geomaterial are simply classified into three categories such as sand, clay and rock for the resistance estimation of axially loaded drilled shafts in Korea. However, in America, O'Neill et al.(1996) presented design methods for a new category of geomaterial which is between soil and rock termed "intermediate geomaterials, IGM's". And FHWA(1999) adapted above most complete classification of geomaterials in its design manual. However, in Korea, these properties are depended on the engineer's judgement, the weathered rocks may be counted as soils, although they may be referred to as IGM's in America. In this study, the applicability of IGM method was investigated through the three construction sites in Korea. For the comparison, two geomaterial properties are applied, respectively. The one was sound soil condition and the other was IGM condition and classical design method and IGM method were applied, respectively. The results showed that the predicted bearing capacities of drilled shafts with IGM's were larger than the predicted values by the classical design method with sound soil condition.

1-g shaking table test is conducted to evaluate the dynamic behavior of a soil-structure system under seismic loading condition. A consistent similitude law between the model and prototype is needed to predict the behavior of the prototype structure, quantitatively. The natural frequency of geomaterial decreases with the increase of shaking intensity because of the non-linear property of the geomaterial. This phenomenon affects the applicability of similitude laws in 1-g shaking table tests. In this study, a simple method is suggested to determine the frequency of the input motions in 1-g tests in order to enhance the applicability of similitude laws. Modified input frequency is calculated using the frequency ratio with consideration of the variation of the natural frequency according to the intensity of input ground acceleration. To verify the applicability of the suggested method, a series of 1-g shaking table tests were performed for three different sizes of model piles having an overburden mass on their heads by varying the acceleration and the frequency of input motion. The acceleration amplification ratio on the overburden mass, the lateral displacement at the pile head and the maximum bending moment along the pile depth were measured. The projected behaviors of the virtual prototype based on the measured values of the model tests, where the input frequencies were calculated by the new method, showed good consistency, verifying the applicability of the suggested method.

This paper investigates effects of rubber inclusion on the strength and physical characteristics of rubber.added composite geomaterial (CGM) in which dredged soils, crumb rubber, and bottom ash are reused for recycling. Several series of test specimens were prepared at 5 different percentages of rubber content (i.e. 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% by weight of the dry dredged soil) and three different percentages of bottom ash content (i.e. 0%, 50% and 100% by weight of the dry dredged soil). The mixed soil specimens were subjected to unconfined compression test and elastic wave test to investigate their unconfined compressive strengths and small strain properties. The values of bulk unit weight of the CGM with bottom ash content of 0% and 100% decrease from 14kN/$m^3$ to 11kN/$m^3$ and 15kN/$m^3$ to 12kN/$m^3$, respectively, as rubber content increases, because the rubber had a specific gravity of 1.13. The test results indicated that the rubber content and bottom ash content were found to influence the strength and stress-strain behavior of CGM. Overall, the unconfined compressive strength, and shear modulus were found to decrease with increasing rubber content. Among the samples tested in this study, those with a lower rubber content exhibited sand-like behavior and a higher shear modulus. Samples with a higher rubber content exhibited rubber-like behavior and a lower shear modulus. The CGM with 100% bottom ash could be used as alternative backfill material better than CGM with 0% bottom ash. The results of elastic wave tests indicate that the higher rubber content, the lower shear modulus (G).
Modern methods for designing IGM(Intermediate Geomaterial) socketed drilled shafts require knowledge of the compressive strength and modulus of the IGM. However, the weathered IGMs at many sites prohibit the recovery of samples of sufficient length and integrity to test cores in either unconfined or triaxial compression tests. Since rational design procedures usually require values of compressive strength, surrogate methods must be employed to estimate the compressive strength of the IGM. A surrogate method considered in this study was Texas cone penetrometer tests which were performed at several sites in North Central Texas. Correlations of Texas cone penetrometer tests and compressive strengths of cores from these formations are provided in the paper. In order to develop the relationships between Texas cone penetrations and side and base resistance of IGM socketed drilled shafts, three filed load tests were conducted in the same sites. Based on the field study and literature reviews, a design method for IGM socketed drilled shafts using Texas cone penetration test was proposed.

Contamination of subsurface results in degradation of geomaterials (i.e., soils and rock mass), in the long run. This is mainly due to the presence of chemical and/or radiological materials in undesirable concentrations and at elevated temperatures. However, as contaminant-geomaterial interaction is an extremely slow and complex process, which primarily depends on their physical, chemical and mineralogical properties, it is quite difficult to study this interaction under laboratory or in situ conditions. In such a situation, accelerated physical modeling, using a geotechnical centrifuge, and finite element/difference based numerical modeling techniques are found to be quite useful. This paper presents details of various modeling techniques developed by the researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai, India, for studying heat migration, flow and interaction (fate) of reactive and non-reactive contaminants in the geoenvironment, under saturated and unsaturated conditions. In addition, paper presents details of the technique that can be employed for determining susceptibility of a material to undergo physico-chemico-mineralogical alterations due to its interaction with contaminants.
The engineering properties of the geomaterial, an essential material in construction engineering, are significantly influenced by consolidation mode, which is called inherent anisotropy. Speically cohesive soils feature the anisotropy mainly due to their flate-like minerals and chemical interactions. In this research, an experimental study was conducted for the investigation of the anisoropy. Three isotropic and four anisotropic consolidated-undrained triaxial compression tests were performed for the cohesive specimens with various stress ratios of consolidation. The effects of the consolidation mode for cohesive soils were presented and investigated in stress-strain behavior, pore water pressure, and undrained shear strength of the test results.
