Seismic safety evaluation of weir structure is significant considering the catastrophic economical consequence of operational disruption. In recent years, the seismic probabilistic risk assessment (SPRA) has been issued as a key area of research for the hydraulic system to mitigate and manage the risk. The aim of this paper is to assess the seismic probabilistic risk of weir structures employing the seismic hazard and the structural fragility in Korea. At the first stage, probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) approach is performed to extract the hazard curve at the weir site using the seismic and geological data. Thereafter, the seismic fragility that defines the probability of structural collapse is evaluated by using the incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) method in accordance with the four different design limit states as failure identification criteria. Consequently, by combining the seismic hazard and fragility results, the seismic risk curves are developed that contain helpful information for risk management of hydraulic structures. The tensile stress of the mass concrete is found to be more vulnerable than other design criteria. The hazard deaggregation illustrates that moderate size and far source earthquakes are the most likely scenario for the site. In addition, the annual loss curves for two different hazard source models corresponding to design limit states are extracted.
As a part of natural hazard assessment, regional slope stability analysis was conducted using Geoscientific Information System (GIS) in the northern area of Chungju Lake. Selected factors which affect the slope stability in the study area were lithology, soil, density of lineament, groundwater level, dip of slope, aspect of slope, and geological engineering properties. Geological structural domains were determined by collected data of joint orientation from about 200 sites in order to produce a slope instability map. Potential type of failure and its direction could be expected through the domains. And a slope instability map was produced, comparing the representative orientations of the domains with the orientations of the slopes which were made through TIN module in ARC/INFO. Under the consideration of environmental geological characteristics of the study area, rating and weighting of each factor of slope stability analysis were decided and spatial analysis of regional slope stability was couducted through overlaying technique of GIS. The result of areal distribution of slope stability showed that the most unstable area was the area between Mt. Pudae and Mt. Jubong, and the northern area of the railway station, Samtan.
When it is assumed that PWR, CANDU and DUPIC spent fuels are disposed of in deep geological repository, consequent annual individual doses are calculated, and it is shown that doses meet the regulatory limit. From these results, the hazardous radionuclides applicable to partitioning and transmutation are selected. These selected radionuclides such as Tc-99, Ⅰ-129, Cs-135 and Np-237 are then reviewed in terms of partitioning and transmutation. Separation of I-129, Np-237 and Tc-99 from spent fuels is considered desirable, and transmutation of these radionuclides results in remarkable hazard reduction. However, it is concluded that separation and transmutation of Cs-135 may be ineffective although it is classified into a hazardous radionuclide.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the susceptibility of landslides at Clicap area, Indonesia , using a Geographic Information System (GIS). Landslide locations were identified from field surveys. The topographic and geological map were collected and constructed into a spatial database using GIS. The factors that influence landslide occurrence, such as slope, aspect and curvature of topography, were calculated from the topographic database and lihology and fault was extracted from the geological database. Then landslide susceptibility was analyzed using the landslide-occurrence factors by likelihood methods. The results of the analysis were verified using the landslide location data. The GIS was used to analyze the vast amount of data efficiently . The results can be used to reduce associated hazards, and to plan land use and construction.

Radioactive wastes arising from a wide range of human activities are in many different physical and chemical forms, contaminated with varying radioactivity. Their common feature is the potential hazard associated with their radioactivity and the need to manage them in such a way as to protect the human environment. The geological disposal is regarded as the most reasonable and effective way to safely disposal high-level radioactive wastes in the world. The conceptual model of geological disposal in China is based on a multi-barrier system that combines an isolating geological environment with an engineered barrier system. The buffer is one of the main engineered barriers for HLW repository. The buffer material is expected to maintain its low water permeability, self-sealing property, radio nuclides adsorption and retardation property, thermal conductivity, chemical buffering property, overpack supporting property, stress buffering property over a long period of time. Benotite is selected as the main content of buffer material that can satisfy above. GMZ deposit is selected as the candidate supplier for Chinese buffer material of High Level Radioactive waste repository. This paper presents geological features of GMZ deposit and basic property of GMZ Na bentonite. GMZ bentonite deposit is a super large scale deposits with high content of Montmorillonite (about $75\%$) and GMZ-l, which is Na-bentonite produced from GMZ deposit is selected as reference material for Chinese buffer material study.
National Research Lab Project 'Optimal Data Fusion of Geophysical and Geodetic Measurements for Geological Hazards Monitoring and Prediction' supported by Korea Ministry of Science and Technology is briefly described. The research focused on the geohazard analysis with geophysical and geodetic instruments such as superconducting gravimeter, seismometer, magnetometer, GPS, and Synthetic Aperture Radar. The aim of the NRL research is to verify the causes of geological hazards through optimal fusion of various observational data in three phases: surface data fusion using geodetic measurements; subsurface data fusion using geophysical measurements; and, finally fusion of both geodetic and geophysical data. The NRL hosted a special session 'Geohazard Monitoring with Space and Geophysical Technology' during the International Symposium on Remote Sensing in 2004 to discuss the current topics, challenges and possible directions in the geohazard research. Here, we briefly describe the special session papers and their relationships to the theme of the special session. The fusion of satellite and ground geophysical and geodetic data gives us new insight on the monitoring and prediction of the geological hazard.

This paper presents multi-source spatial data integration models based on probability theory for landslide hazard assessment. Four probabilistic models such as empirical likelihood ratio estimation, logistic regression, generalized additive and predictive discriminant models are proposed and applied. The models proposed here are theoretically based on statistical relationships between landslide occurrences and input spatial data sets. Those models especially have the advantage of direct use of continuous data without any information loss. A case study from the Gangneung area, Korea was carried out to quantitatively assess those four models and to discuss operational issues.
