This study was conducted to characterize on the relationships of rainfall intensity and infiltration rate of rainfall dependent on unit weight change in the gneissic weathered soil by a column test equipment. In this study, volumetric water content and pore water pressure were measured using TDR sensors and tensiometers at regular time intervals. Rainfall conditions including continuous rainfall and repeated rainfall were selected in order to know the effect of antecedent rainfall. In the condition of rainfall intensity 20mm/h and the unit weights of soil as $1.35g/cm^3$, $1.55g/cm^3$ and $1.61g/cm^3$, average rainfall infiltration rate was $2.814{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$, $1.969{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$ and $1.252{\times}10^{-3}cm/sec$ respectively. The higher rainfall intensity and lower unit weight of soil, the faster average infiltration rate. Overflow in the column was happened except rainfall condition of rainfall intensity 20mm and soil unit weight $1.35g/cm^3$. Increasing the soil unit weight, overflowed water was increased and occurrence time was faster.
It is only possible through the image analysis of borehole wall and the core recovered from borehole constructed in rock mass that the real information about geologic characteristics in rock mass is directly obtained in primary research. Monitoring apparatus with multi-functional utility has implemented and applied in-situ condition for finding the geologic condition of target area. But, this apparatus is very expensive to be applied at the risk of loss during monitoring and cause hard work for moving them to the determined position. This paper shows the underground imaging from the borehole information obtained by a borehole camera with the simple utility and low cost enough to investigate the characteristics of borehole wall. Monitoring for this has been done in open-pit mine located at the northeastern part of Fukuoka Prefecture in Japan, and finally the three dimensional imaging of geological discontinuity was discussed relative to the field condition.

Physical and chemical weathering degrades rock, affecting its structural properties and thus the stability of stone buildings or other structures. Confocal laser scan microscopy (CLSM) is used here to observe temporal changes in the surface roughness of rock samples under simulated accelerated weathering. Samples were pressurized to 50, 55, or 70 MPa using a pressure frame, and subjected to freeze/thaw cycling controlled by a thermostat. The temperature was cycled from -20℃ to 40℃ and back. After each 20 cycles, CLSM was used to assess the change in surface roughness, and roughness factors were calculated to quantify the progression of the surface condition over time. Variations in cross-section line-roughness parameters and surface-roughness parameters were analyzed for specific parts of the sample surfaces at 5× and 50× magnification. The result reveals that the highest and lowest values of the roughness factors are changed according to elapsed time. Freezing/thawing at high pressure caused larger changes in the roughness factor than at low pressure.
All the radionuclides in high-level nuclear waste will decay to harmless levels eventually but for some radionuclides decay is so slow that their radiation remains dangerous for times on the order of tens or hundreds of thousands of years. At the present time, the most favorite disposal plan for high-level radioactive waste is a mined geological disposal in which canister enclosing stable solid form of radioactive waste is placed in mined cavities locating hundred meters below the surface. The chief hazard in such disposal is dissolution of radionuclides from the waste in the groundwater that will eventually carry the dissolved radionuclides to surface environments. The hazard from possible escape of the radionuclides through groundwater can be delayed by engineered and geologic barriers. The engineered barriers can become useless by unexpected geologic catastrophe such as volcanism, earthquake, and tectonic movement and by fraudulent work such as careless construction, improperly welded canisters within the first few decades or centuries. As a result, dangerously radioactive waste which is still intensively radioactive is directly exposed to attack by moving groundwater. All the more, it is almost impossible to control repositories for times more than 10,000 years. Therefore, naturally controlled geologic, barriers whose properties will not be changed within 10,000 years are important to guarantee the safety of repositories of high-level radioactive waste. In Sweden and France, the suitability of granite for the mined geological disposal of high-level waste has been studied intensively. According to the research in Sweden and France, granites has the following physio-chemical characteristics which can delay the transportation of radionuclide by groundwater. First, the permeabilities of granites decreases as the depth increases and is $10^{-8}{\sim}10^{-12}m/s$ at depth below 300 m. Second, groundwater at depth below 300 m has pH=7-9 and reducing condition (Eh=-0.1~0.4). This geochemical condition is desirable to prevent both canister and solid waste from corrosion. Third most radionuclides are not transported by low solubilities and some radionuclide with high solubility such as Cs and Sr are retarded by absorption of geologic media through which ground water flows. Therefore, if high-level waste is disposed at depth below 300 m in the granite body which has a low permeability and is geologically stable more than 10,000 years, the safety of repositories from the hazard due to radionuclide escape can guaranteed for more than 10,000 years.
Triggering rainfall and geologic conditions with the state of slope hazard were investigated based on the field investigation and collected data on the slope hazard during the period between 2011 and 2014 in Korea. Analysis results showed that most of slope hazards occurred in metamorphic rock and debris flow was the most frequent type of slope hazard. Slope hazard increased when the higher monthly mean rainfall was recorded. However, most of slope hazard occurred when certain time elapsed after the moment of maximum hourly rainfall. Finally, more than one month of long-term rainfall was shown to be related to the frequency of slope hazard in the period.
To compute a permeability coefficient along a rough fracture that takes into account the fracture geometry, this study performed detailed measurements of fracture roughness using a confocal laser scanning microscope, a quantitative analysis of roughness using a spectral analysis, and a homogenization analysis to calculate the permeability coefficient on the microand macro-scale. The homogenization analysis is a type of perturbation theory that characterizes the behavior of microscopically inhomogeneous material with a periodic boundary condition in the microstructure. Therefore, it is possible to analyze accurate permeability characteristics that are represented by the local effect of the facture geometry. The Cpermeability coefficients that are calculated using the homogenization analysis for each rough fracture model exhibit an irregular distribution and do not follow the relationship of the cubic law. This distribution suggests that the permeability characteristics strongly depend on the geometric conditions of the fractures, such as the roughness and the aperture variation. The homogenization analysis may allow us to produce more accurate results than are possible with the preexisting equations for calculating permeability.

Blast vibration equations proposed previously are investigated. Special attention is given to the blast vibration equation which shows the best fitting to the geologic condition of Korea. The fittness of proposed blast vibration equation is analyzed and examined using many field data measured in Korea. The prediction of blast vibration equation using field data was performed by linear regression analysis. Moreover, after the prediction of each blast vibration equation, vibration velocity is recalculated on the basis of scaled distance at each equation. Reliability of regressioned blast vibration equation is observed by comparing predicted and measured velocity, which is divided into small-scale blasting of city and large-scale blasting of quarry. Based on this study, the best fitting equation to the Korean geologic condition is ROOT SCALING & CUBE ROOT SCALING proposed by USBM(United Nations Bureau of Mines). Also representative blast vibration equations depending on the different kinds of rock mass are proposed using measured and existing field data.

It is essential to comprehend coupled hydro-mechanical behavior to utilize subsurface for the recent demand for underground space usage. In this study, we developed a new simulator for numerical simulation as a tool for researching to consider the various domestic field and subsurface conditions. To develop the new module, we combined OpenGeoSys, one of the scientific software package that handles fluid mechanics (H), thermodynamics (T), and rock and soil mechanics (M) in the subsurface with FLAC3D, one of the commercial software for geotechnical engineering problems reinforced. In this simulator development, we design OpenGeoSys as a master and FLAC3D as a slave via a file-based sequential coupling. We have chosen Terzaghi's consolidation problem related to single-phase fluid flow at a saturated condition as a benchmark model to verify the proposed module. The comparative results between the analytical solution and numerical analysis showed a good agreement.
This study aimed at simulating several responses to stresses caused by the ground water level variations around the K-1 oil stockpile. For this simulation, we considered the characteristic hydrogeological condition including the special occurrence of long and thick acidic dyke, which is regarded as the main geological structure dominating the ground water flow system at this study area. We activated twenty-four imaginary wells which are located in northern and southern area around central K-1 site. Each neighboring distance is altogether 300 m and whole distance between K-1 site and remote wells is 1,200 m. Through the modeling, we operated the long-term and continuous pumping tests and finally categorized five zones based on maximum pumping rates for the imaginary wells; zone I within 300 meter distance from K-1 site with a pumping rate of 50 $m^3/day$; zone II between 300 to 600 meter distance from K-1 site with a pumping rate of 75 $m^3/day$; zone III between 600 to 900 meter distance from K-1 site with 150 $m^3/day$; zone IV between 900 to 1,200 meter distance from K-1 site with 300 $m^3/day$; and zone V of acidic dyke area. At zone V, especially because of their possibility of high transmissivity for groundwater flow, it is necessary to control and restrict groundwater discharge.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of vegetation on the cutting slope applied by vegetation system in the whole land. The engineering characteristics of slopes were investigated using the face mapping and physical tests. From the statistical methods, a relationship between a geologic stratum and degree of covering was independent. Therefore, the afforestation of slope was affected more by condition of vegetation as direction and opening of joints, and a topsoil state than by conventional classification of layer. It was concluded that the adjustable vegetation on the slope considering condition of geometric shape of slope, joint data and spontaneous type could make useful early afforestation.
