  • Granulite complexes in northern (the Nangnim block), eastern (ther Kimchaek zone of the Macheonryong belt) and southern (separate windows among upper Proterozoic structure such as the Wonsan, Nampo and Haeju granulites) parts of the Northern Korea are studied. Multistage deformations, metamorphic and migmatitic events, and granite formations are recognized in these granulite complexes. Mineral thermobarometry and fluid inclusion investigationss are used to establish the P-T evolutionary trends during prograde and retrograde metamorphic events. The peak metamorphism of granulites is characterized by temperature near $800^{\circ}C$ and pressure near 5.5-6 kb. Retrograde evolution includes cooling at constant pressure or with variable pressure ranging up to 7-8 kb. This P-T change corresponds to the transition from high to moderate or low geothermal gradient. The subsequent cooling is ac-companied by significant decompression to 3-4 kb.

  • The Lu-Hf isotope system, coupled with the advent of multiple collector inductively coupled plasma source mass spectrometry, is now widely utilized as a tracer for geological processes. The paper presents a comprehensive review on the principles of the Lu-Hf isotopes, and its current and potential applications to both geochronology and petrogenesis. Finally, based on the Lu-Hf isotopic data from Korean mafic and ultramafic rocks, its has been discussed evolution of the mantle beneath the Korean Peninsula.

  • Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) uses focused high-speed primary ions to produce secondary ions from sample surface that are analyzed through a mass filter. SIMS is often called as ion microprobe, since it offers a micrometer-scale spatial resolution. Although the precision and accuracy of SIMS are not as good as many conventional mass spectrometers, it has several advantages such as small sample-size requirement, high spatial resolution and capability of in-situ analysis. In the field of geochemistry/cosmochemistry, SIMS is widely used for (1) stable isotope geochemistry of H, C, O, S, etc., (2) geochronology of U/Th-bearing minerals, (3) lateral distribution of trace elements in a mineral, and (4) discovery of presolar grains and investigation of their isotopic compositions.

  • In the previous studies on Rb-Sr geochronology, Gyeonggi Massif was known as the oldest rock in Korea Peninsula but the detailed sequence of geochronology was not studied yet. In the present study, some of whole rock isochrons considered here can be geochronologically grouped as follows: The ages of leucocratic gneisses at Yangpyeong, and augen and banded gneisses at Anyang show 2200 to 2300 m.y. which may represent the time of the Massif formation or an igneous intrusion. The age of the granite gneiss distributed in Yangpyeong area shows about 1400 m.y., which apparently represents the intrusion time of the gneiss. The age of the extremely altered metamorphic rock shows about 500 m.y., which may represent the time of a Caledonian orogenic event probably with hydrothermal activities. The other episodic ages of 800 to 900 m.y. which was widely observed through the Massif, may represent the ages of Precambrian igneous activities or regional metamorphism in the Massif. It seems to be reasonable that the ages of 120 to 270 m.y. show the times of Mesozoic and Late Palaeozoic Plutonisms in the Massif.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of soil and groundwater environment changed by wildfire on cesium adsorption and transport. Soil samples (A, B) used in the study were collected from Gangwon-do, where wildfires frequently occur, and the adsorption and transport of cesium in the samples were evaluated through batch and column experiments. As a result of the batch adsorption experiments with various concentrations of cesium (CW ≈ 10~105 ㎍/L), the adsorption distribution coefficient (Kd) of cesium was higher in sample A for all observed concentrations. It means that the adsorption capacity of sample A was higher to that of sample B, which was also confirmed through the parameters of adsorption isotherm models (Freundlich and Langmuir model) applied to the experimental results. The fixed bed column experiments simulated the actual soil and groundwater environment, and they showed that cesium was retarded approximately 43 and 27 times than a nonreactive tracer in sample A and B, respectively. In particular, a significant retardation occurred in the sample A. Although sample A contains little clays, total organic carbon (TOC) contents were 3 times greater than sample B. These results imply that particulate organic matter caused by wildfire might influence the adsorption and transport of cesium in the organic matter-rich soil and groundwater environment.

  • Forest fires can generate numerous pollutants through the combustion of vegetation and cause serious environmental problems. The global warming and climate change will increase the frequency and scale of forest fires across the world. In Korea, many nuclear power plants (NPPs) are located in the East Coast where large-scale forest fires frequently occur. Therefore, understanding the sorption and transport characteristics of radionuclides in the forest fire areas is required against the severe accidents in NPPs. This article reviewed the physiochemical changes and contamination of groundwater and soil environments after forest fires, and discussed sorption and transport of radionuclides in the subsurface environment of burned forest area. We considered the geochemical factors of subsurface environment changed by forest fire. Moreover, we highlighted the need for studies on changes and contamination of subsurface environments caused by forest fires to understand more specific mechanisms.

  • The older granitic rocks of the study area are composed of mainly orthogneiss and foliated granite. These rocks shows mostly mortar or fiaser structure by strong mylonitization and thermal metamorphism during several orogenies. $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ incremental·release ages of these rocks have been determined for 6 hornblende. 7 muscovite and 4 biotite concentrates separated from rocks collected across the Ryeongnam massif. Most $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ age are discordant with Rb-Sr whole rock age of the same area. These ages range from 1998 to 172Ma. This discordant age is interpreted to indicate that samples were in contact with Daebo granite body that was characterized by large and variable $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ ratios. Such ratios most likely resulted from widespread diffusion of the argon liberated from older granitic rocks during several metamorphic overprint. The general trend of the chemical composition of these rocks suggest that most of them are some series of differentiated products by fractional crystallization.

  • Orthogneiss of the study area is meta-igneous complex that composed of granite gneiss, porphyroblastic gneiss and migmatitic gneiss. Migmatitic gneiss produced from granite gneiss and porphyroblastic gneiss by strong ductile shearing. These rocks show mostly gneissic and partly mortar textures by strong regional metamorphism and ductile shearing during several orogenies. $^{40}Ar-^{39}Ar$ incremental-release ages of these rocks have been determined for 1 hornblende. 1 biotite and 3 muscovite concentrates separated from orthogneisses in this area. Ages of regional metamorphism and ductile shearing of these rocks are more than 5 stages(1500 Ma, 260 Ma, 190 Ma, 180-170 Ma and 160 Ma) under $300^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$. These rocks had not been nearly effected by Daebo orogeny, because this area is far from Daebo granite bodies. The general trend of major chemical composition and mineral composition of these orthogneisses suggest that these rocks are some series of differentiated products from magma.
