  • MIPROBE is a web-based tool for design of universal, genus-specific, and species-specific primers and probes. The main functions of MIPROBE are collection of target gene sequences, construction of consensus sequences, collection of candidate primers and probes, and evaluation of candidates by BLAST. Biologists with little computer skills can easily use MIPROBE to design large-scale universal, genus-, and species-specific primers and probes. This software is available at http://www.miprobe.com. Also detailed descriptions of how to use the program are found at this site.

The Genus Philanthus (Hymenoptera: Sphecidae: Philanthinae) in Korea

  • The genus Philanthus Fabricius, 1790 in Korea are reviewed, and two species, Philanthus triangulum and P. coronata, are treated. The former is new to Korea. This species is easily separated from congeners by dense punctures in propodral enclosure and tri-forked marking in lower face. DNA barcoding test is supportive in our identification as well as conspecitficity of Korean materials showing variation in size and coloration. The observed data on flower associations of this species specified with domestic localites and date are separately provided. The current status of Philanthus coronatus that has been the only representative of the genus but forgotten for a lengthy time in Korea is discussed.

  • The true bug genus Paromius from Korea is revised taxonomically. It comprises the following three species: P. exiguus (Distant, 1883), P. jejunus (Distant, 1883) and P. gracilis (Rambur, 1839). Among them, P. jejunus (Distant, 1883) is recorded for the first time in Korea. The pest bug injurious to rice culture, known as P. exiguus (Distant,1883), has been recorded erroneously by the previous authors from Korea due to the misidentification, which is rectified here with the support of morphological evidence. All the species of this genus are classified with proper redescriptions, and an identification key to species is provided with illustrations.

A Newly Recorded Sea Star of the Genus Marginaster (Asteroidea: Valvatida: Poraniidae) from the Korea Strait, Korea

  • A sea star was collected from the Korea Strait in the waters adjacent to eastern Jeju Island, Korea ($33^{\circ}39^{\prime}86^{{\prime}{\prime}}N$, $127^{\circ}33^{\prime}12^{{\prime}{\prime}}E$) at a depth of 92 m on November 5, 2016. This specimen was identified as Marginaster paucispinus Fisher, 1913, from the family Poraniidae of the order Valvatida, based on morphological characteristics. The genus Marginaster Perrier, 1881 and M. paucispinus, which were first reported in the South China Sea, are new to the Korean fauna. Partial sequences of mitochondrial COI and 16S ribosomal RNA of M. paucispinus were have been determined for the first time and were deposited in GenBank. They are the first molecular records for the genus Marginaster.

  • In Korea, species of the genus Ptecticus Loew, 1855 (Family Stratiomyidae) have been known as three species, P. aurifer (Walker, 1854), P. matsumurae Lindner, 1936 and P. japonicus (Thunberg, 1789) (= P. tenebrifer (Walker, 1849)). Additionally, an unrecorded species, P. sinchangensis ${\hat{O}}uchi$, 1938, was found in Korea. We therefore report the species for the first time in Korea with morphological diagnosis and key for the identification of the Korean species of the genus. In total, the members of the genus Ptecticus are officially recognized as four species in Korea.

  • Rhogadopsis속은 주로 굴파리에 기생하는 고치벌로 Opius속의 아속으로 여겨져왔다. 그러나 시맥의 형태와 단계통 분기군을 형성함에 따라 Rhogadopsis속은 속으로 격상되었다. 전라남도 여서도에서의 동물상 조사 결과, Rhogadopsis obliqua의 수컷 표본을 쓸어 잡기로 채집되었다. Rhogadopsis obliqua의 기술과 진단 형질 도판을 수록한다.

Taxonomic review of the genus Taeniogonalos Schulz (Hymenoptera: Trigonalyoidea: Trigonalyidae) from Korea, with a description of the male of T. sauteri

  • The family Trigonalyidae Cresson, 1887, is a small group of parasitic wasps (Hymenoptera: Apocrita) comprising around 150 species worldwide. Among them, the genus Taeniogonalos Schulz, 1906 is the richest in species and the most widely distributed. Four species, namely T. fasciata, T. mongolica, T. subtruncata and T. tricolor, were recorded from the Korean Peninsula. The genus is studied here on the basis of a larger collection of material from South Korea. Six species of Taeniogonalos are recognized, including three species that are newly recorded: T. formosana, T. sauteri and T. taihorina. The published record of T. mongolica in Korea currently seems groundless, and this species should be excluded from the Korean fauna. A key to species identification is provided, with illustrations and description of each species. The hitherto unknown male of T. sauteri is described. We also present new biological data on T. sauteri and T. formosana, including the record of a new family of Diptera as secondary hosts for the family.

  • The paper describes identification of new microlichen (Sculptolumina japonica) in South Korea. A detailed taxonomic description and comments are presented for the taxa studied. Lichen genus Sculptolumina is reported for the first time for this country.

  • From the root nodules of legumes distributed in South Korea, 74 strains of Rhizobium were isolated. The strains isolated were identified based on Bergey's Manual and Vincent's identification key.   • 왕대속은 벼과 또는 화본과에 속하는 다년생 목본성 초본이며 아시아의 인도와 중국에 많은 종이 주로 분포한다. 식물에서 속간 속내 계통관계 추론을 위해 널리 이용되고 있는 ITS 부위가 있다. 이 속에 속하는 우리나라 자생 식물 왕대 속내 네 식물종 간 계통 관계를 평가하기 위해 핵 게놈의 ITS 부위로 평가하였다. DNA 서열 배당은 많은 갭(gaps)을 가지고 있었다. 이 속 내 서열 변이는 일부 삽입과 결실이 발견되었고 속내 종간 변이는 자연도태에 의한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 이 속의 오죽과 분죽은 세 계통도(MP, ML, and NJ)에서 모두 같은 분지군을 형성하여 가장 근연관계에 있었다. 기존의 형태학적 특성과 단순 반복 서열(ISSR)의 결과와 유사한 계통 관계를 나타내어 왕대속에서 ITS의 서열이 이들 분류군에 매우 유익한 정보를 제공하고 있음을 시사하였다.
