  • Back propagation algorithm based on a gradient-decent method has been widely used to the training of a neural network. However, this algorithm have some problems such as dropping the minimum value in a local area according to an initial value and setting the number of units in a hidden layer when training the neural network. Accordingly, to solve the above-mentioned problems, this paper proposes a genetic algorithm using the training method of the neural network. Thus, the improved genetic algorithm using a new crossover and mutation method is proposed to discriminate 3 bit parity. Experiments confirm that the proposed system is effective for training speed after demonstrating for generation gap, the number of units in the hidden layer, and the number of individuals.

  • As a result to amplifying 12 samples of 'Sok-dan' through an random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) method using eighteen DEC and URP primers, distinct band forms enabling discrimination of Phlomus umbrosa and Dipsacus asperoides were observable in the UBC 320 primer, UBC 367 primer, UBC 385 primer, UBC 414 primer, UBC 423 primer, URP 3 primer, URP 5 primer and URP 9 primer. The polymorph result amplified with a random primer was evaluated through Gelcompar II, showing a result dividable into two groups. The divided groups were the dried sample group of Dipsacus asperoides and the group of Phlomis umbrosa. In order to recognize the distinction between Dipsaci Radix types, the genetic variation of 'Sok-dan' produced domestically and imported was evaluated through RAPD, and the potential to distinguish these in forms of dried medicine was identified, presenting a method to authentification of Phlomis umbrosa and Dispacus asperoides.

  • Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is the most widely used method in speech recognition. In general, HMM parameters are trained to have maximum likelihood (ML) for training data. This method doesn't take account of discrimination to other words. To complement this problem, this paper proposes a word verification method by re-recognition of the recognized word and its similar word using the discriminative function between two words. The similar word is selected by calculating the probability of other words to each HMM. The recognizer haveing discrimination to each word is realized using the weighting to each state and the weighting is calculated by genetic algorithm.

  • The genetic diversity of Korean native chicken is important for conservation of native chicken breeds and developing economically valuable traits in Korea. In this review, various types of genetic markers using Korean native chickens were investigated, which are mtDNA variations, microsatellite markers, markers in Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC), and single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). These genetic markers are suitable for breed discrimination and diversity studies because of their high polymorphism status. Thus, the purpose of this study was to summarize the genetic markers developed in the Korean native chickens and diversity studies using these breeds. Ultimately, these markers can be used for the future studies for understanding of genetic characteristics.

  • The objective of this study was to determine genetic variation of five Korean native chicken lines using 30 microsatellite (MS) markers, which were previously recommended by ISAG (International Society for Animal Genetics). The initial study indicated that two microsatellite markers, MCW0284 and LEI0192, were not amplified in these lines and excluded for further analysis. Twenty eight microsatellite markers were investigated in 83 birds from five Korean native chicken lines. The identified mean number of alleles was 4.57. Also, the expected, observed heterozygosity (He, Ho) and polymorphism information content (PIC) values were estimated in these markers and they ranged from 0.31~0.868, 0.145~0.699, and 0.268~0.847, respectively. The results were used for the discrimination of five chicken lines using genetic distance values and also neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree was constructed. Based on the He and PIC values, eighteen markers are enough for the discrimination of these Korean native chicken lines for the expected probability of identity values among genotypes of random individuals (PI), random half sibs ($PI_{half-sibs}$) and random sibs ($PI_{sibs}$). Taken together, these results will help the decision of conservation strategies and establishment of traceability system in this native chicken breed. Also, the use of ISAG-recommended microsatellite markers may indicate that the global comparison with other chicken breeds is possible.

  • Andrew Niccols's movie Gattaca (1997) inspired the formulation of the "Gattaca Argument" concerning the negative outcome of biotechnology, which has since been critiqued especially in the context of transhumanism and posthumanism. According this argument the development of genetic enhancement will produce a genetic discrimination and lead us to serious form of inequality. However, in particular transhumanists deny that here are reasons to worry and advocating instead the transformation of human condition in terms of genetic enhancement. Moreover, they question that genetic enhancement will necessarily lead to social inequality. In what follows, we will reexamine the Gattaca Argument and its critiques based on the movie in order to reassess the role the movie plays in the subsequent scholarly discussion. We will argue that existing critiques fall short of capturing the problem posed in the movie - the problem of the inhumane. Based on a hermeneutic approach to the movie we will both reconstruct the arguments and evaluate the transhuman counterarguments in terms of modern history of philosophical ideas.

  • The aims of this study were to compare genetic distances among 14 Phalaenopsis varieties using simple sequence repeat (SSR) and sequence-related amplified polymorphism (SRAP) marker systems and to determine the discrimination using SSR. A total of 111 SSR primers and 30 SRAP combinations were initially screened. Twelve SSR primers and thirty SRAP combinations showed high polymorphism among the 14 Phalaenopsis varieties including domestic breeding varieties, conserved in National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS). The amplified DNA fragments were separated by denaturing acrylamide gels and detected by silver staining method. A total of 474 polymorphic bands, including 55 by SSRs and 419 by SRAPs, were identified and used for genetic diversity analysis. Polymorphic bands were scored for calculating a simple matching coefficient of genetic similarity and cluster analysis with multi-variate statistical package (MVSP) 3.1. Fourteen Phalaenopsis varieties were classified into three major groups at similarity coefficient value of 0.683 and 0.66 using SRAP and SSR, respectively. Also we could discriminate these domestic breeding Palaenopsis varieties using only SSR 20 and SSR 22. The results indicate that SSR analysis is effective for discrimination among Phalaenopsis varieties and SRAP is useful for genetic diversity when there is no sequence information. These studied SSR and SRAP markers will be useful tools for genotype identification, germplasm conservation and genetic relationship study in Phalaenopsis.

  • Unprecedented amount of genetic information being generated from the result of Human Genome Project (HGP) and advances in genetic research is already forcing changes in the paradigm of health and disease. The ultimate goal of genetic medicine is to use genetic information and technology to develop new ways of treatment or even prevention of the disease on an individual level for 'personalized medicine'. Genetics is play ing an increasingly important role in the diagnosis, monitoring and management of common multifactorial diseases in addition to rare single-gene disorders. While wide range of genetic testing have provided benefits to patients and family, uncertainties surrounding test interpretation, the current lack of available medical options for the diseases, and risks for discrimination and social stigmatization may remain to be resolved. However an increasing number of genetic tests are becoming commercially available, including direct to consumer genetic testing, yet public is often unaw are of their clinical and social implications. The personal nature of information generated by a genetic test, its power to affect major life decisions and family members, and its potential misuse raise important ethical considerations. Therefore appropriate genetic counseling is needed for patient to be informed with the benefits, limitations and risks of genetic tests, prior to informed consent for the tests. Physician also should be familiar with the legal and ethical issues involved in genetic testing to tell patients how w ell a particular genetic risk factor relates with likelihood of disease, and be able to provide appropriate genetic counseling. Genetic counseling become a mandatory requirement as global standard for many genetic testing such as prenatal diagnosis, presymtomatic DNA diagnostic tests and cancer susceptibility gene test for familial cancer syndrome. In oder to meet the challenge of genetic medicine of 21 century in korean health care system, professional education program and certification board for medical genetics specialist including non-MD genetic counselors should be addressed by medical society and regulatory policy of national health insurance reimbursement for genetic counseling to be in place to promote the implementation of clinical genetic service including genetic counseling for proper genetic testing.

  • This paper proposes the new method based on fuzzy logic which recognizes between normal, and abnormal(two types of abnormal : follicular neoplastic, and papillary neoplastic) of thyroid gland cells from pre-obtained 16 feature parameters of image data. This paper applies the genetic algorithms to obtain the dominant feature parameters which have a great influence on discrimination between normal and abnormal cells. This paper shows the effectiveness of proposed method to 240 thyroid gland cells(60 normal cells, 120 follicular neoplastic cells and 60 papillary neoplastic cells) and new dominant feature parameters obtained by genetic algorithms. As a consequence of using the proposed method, average recognition rate of 88.75 % was obtained.
