Helium Recondensing System Utilizing Cascade Roebuck Refrigerators

  • This paper describes a design of the helium-recondensing system utilizing cascade Roebuck refrigerators. Superconducting generator or motor has the superconducting field wind-ing in its rotor that should be continuously cooled by cryogen. Since liquid helium transfer from the stationary system to the rotor is problematic, cumbersome, and inefficient, the novel concept of a rotating helium-recondensing system is contrived. The vaporized cold helium inside the rotor is isothermally compressed by centrifugal force and expanded sequentially in cascade refrigerators until the helium is recondensed at 4.2 K. There is no helium coupling between the rotor and the stationary liquid helium storage. Thermodynamic analysis of the cascade refrigeration system is performed to determine the key design parameters. The loss mechanisms are explained to identify entropy generation that degrades the performance of the system.

  • Cleft lip and/or palate are common birth defects in humans and the causes including multiple genetic and environmental factors are complex. Combinations of genetic, biochemical, and embryological approaches in the laboratory mice are used to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying normal craniofacial development and the congenital craniofacial malformations including cleft lip and/or palate. Both forward and reverse genetic approaches are used. The forward genetic approach involves identification of causative genes and molecular pathways disrupted by uncharacterized mutations that cause craniofacial malformations including cleft lip and/or cleft palate. The reverse genetic approach involves generation and analyses of mice carrying null or conditional mutations using the Cre-loxP mediated gene targeting techniques.

  • This paper aims to describe the aerodynamic vibrations of various structural elements of bridges, which are particular issues at present. The aerodynamic countermeasures for those vibrations are also discussed considering the generation mechanisms of the aerodynamic instabilities. In this paper, an example of vortex-induced oscillation of bridge deck and its lesson are discussed. Next, the wind-induced cable vibration and its aerodynamic countermeasures are reviewed. Then, the aerodynamic characteristics on two edge girders and their feasibility for application to long span cable-stayed bridges are considered. Furthermore, the bridge decks for future long span bridges are proposed and their aerodynamic characteristics are also discussed.

Lead-Lag Relationships between Import Commodity Prices and Freight Rates: The Case of Raw Material Imports of Korea

  • Purpose - This study investigates the lead-lag relations between the prices of major commodities imported into Korea and corresponding shipping freight rates. This paper aims to provide implications for cross-market causal relations between related economic segments. Design/Methodology - For economic long-run equilibrium between commodity prices and freights, a Johansen (1988) cointegration test is employed first. Then, Granger (1987) causality tests are performed under the vector error correction model (VECM) framework. Findings - The results indicate that the direction of causality varies by raw materials, which is attributable to different economic mechanisms in the corresponding shipping transportation sectors. In addition, the significance of causality becomes blurred during the post-2008 period. Practical Implication - Corporate managers in commodity trading, steelmaking, power generation, and oil refinery sectors can take advantage of the findings in this study as identifying leading economic indicators can be helpful for decision making in both short- and long-term strategies. Originality/value - This study is the first attempt to analyze the inter-relations between commodity prices and corresponding freight rates focusing on raw material imports of Korea.

  • Currently, generative artificial intelligence is a hot topic around the world. Generative artificial intelligence creates various images, art, video clips, advertisements, etc. The problem is that it is very difficult to verify the internal work of artificial intelligence. As a requirements engineer, I attempt to create a toon image by applying linguistic mechanisms to the current issue. This is combined with the UML object model through the semantic role analysis technique of linguists Chomsky and Fillmore. Then, the derived properties are linked to the toon creation template. This is to ensure productivity based on reusability rather than creativity in toon engineering. In the future, we plan to increase toon image productivity by incorporating software development processes and reusability.

The Hypersensitive Response. A Cell Death during Disease Resistance

  • Host cell death occurs during many, but not all, interactions between plants and the pathogens that infect them. This cell death can be associated with disease resistance or susceptibility, depending on the nature of the pathogen. The most well-known cell death response in plants is the hypersensitive response (HR) associated with a resistance response. HR is commonly regulated by direct or indirect interactions between avirulence proteins from pathogen and resistance proteins from plant and it can be the result of multiple signaling pathways. Ion fluxes and the generation of reactive oxygen species commonly precede cell death, but a direct involvement of the latter seems to vary with the plant-pathogen combination. Exciting advances have been made in the identification of cellular protective components and cell death suppressors that might operate in HR. In this review, recent progress in the mechanisms by which plant programmed cell death (PCD) occurs during disease resistance will be discussed.

  • Cam mechanisms are one of the most popular devices for generating irregular motion and are widely used in many automatic equipments, such as textile machinery, internal combustion engines and other automatic devices. In order to obtain the positive motion of follower by rotating cam, its shape should be correctly designed and manufactured. In present paper, a CAD/CAM system is developed for shape design of disk cams using relative velocity method and NC code generation using the biarc curve interpolation. And, a disk cam is successfully manufactured by the developed CAD/CAM system. Thus, it is shown that the developed CAD/CAM system can be used for high precision cam profile CNC grinding machine.

$Hg_{1-x}Cd_{x}$Te 광다이오드에서 터널링 전류가 RoA에 미치는 영향 (Tunneling Current Contribution to RoA of $Hg_{1-x}Cd_{x}$Te Photodiodes)

  • RoA is an important figure of merits for estimating the performance of p-n junction infrared detectors. This paper presents the tunneling current contribution to RoA of $Hg_{1-x}Cd_{x}$Te n$^{+}$-p juction photodiodes. Then, a diffusion model, a thermal generation-recombination model, an indirect tunneling model via trap, and a band-to-band direct tunneling model are considered to calculate RoA. Using these models, RoA depending on temperature, doping concentration, and mole fraction is calculated. Also from these results, under various operating conditions the dominant dark current mechanisms cna be understood.

The Heterochromatin-1 Phosphorylation Contributes to TPA-Induced AP-1 Expression

  • Activator protein-1 (AP-1) is an inducible transcription factor that contributes to the generation of chronic inflammation in response to oxidative and electrophilic stress. Previous studies have demonstrated that the PI3K/Akt1 pathway plays an important role in the transcriptional regulation of AP-1 expression. Although the histone post-translational modifications (PTMs) are assumed to affect the AP-1 transcriptional regulation by the PI3K/Akt pathway, the detailed mechanisms are completely unknown. In the present study, we show that heterochromatin 1 gamma ($HP1{\gamma}$) plays a negative role in TPA-induced c-Jun and c-Fos expression. We show that TPA-induced Akt1 directly phosphorylates $HP1{\gamma}$, abrogates its suppressive function and increases the interaction between histone H3 and 14-3-$3{\varepsilon}$. Collectively, these our data illustrate that the activation of PI3K/Akt pathway may play a permissive role in the recruitment of histone readers or other coactivators on the chromatin, thereby affecting the degree of AP-1 transcription.
