  • Piezoelectric composite films which are enabled by inorganic piezoelectric nanomaterials-embedded polymer, have attracted enormous attention as a sustainable power source for low powered electronics, because of their ease of fabrication and flexible nature. However, the absorption of applied stress by the soft polymeric matrices is a major issue that must be solved to expand the fields of piezoelectric composite applications. Herein, a flexible and porous piezoelectric composite (piezoelectric sponge) comprised of BaTiO3 nanoparticles and polydimethylsiloxane was developed using template method to enhance the energy conversion efficiency by minimizing the stress that vanishes into the polymer matrix. In the porous structure, effective stress transfer can occur between the piezoelectric active materials in compression mode due to direct contact between the ceramic particles embedded in the pore-polymer interface. The piezoelectric sponge with 30 wt% of BaTiO3 particles generated an open-circuit voltage of ~12 V and a short-circuit current of ~150 nA. A finite element method-based simulation was conducted to theoretically back up that the piezoelectric output performance was effectively improved by introducing the sponge structure. Furthermore, to demonstrate the feasibility of pressure detecting applications using the BaTiO3 particles-embedded piezoelectric sponge, the composite was arranged in a 3 × 3 array and integrated into a single pressure sensor. The fabricated sensor array successfully detected the shape of the applied pressure. This work can provide a cost-effective, biocompatible, and structural strategy for realizing piezoelectric composite-based energy harvesters and self-powered sensors with improved energy conversion efficiency.

  • In optoelectronic devices including displays and solar cells that convert electricity into light or light into electricity, it is important to control optical behavior of light to improve device efficiency. Specifically, the control of internal emitting light in the OLEDs can induce more light to go out, improving luminous efficiency. In addition, the control of optical behavior of incident light in solar cells can increase optical path in the light absorption layer, increasing power-conversion efficiency. In this study, we generated wrinkles as a physical structure to control optical behavior of light and independently controlled their wavelength and height by changing stress relaxation time. To explore the effect of wavelength and height on optical behavior, we conducted UV/Vis spectroscopy analysis of wrinkles with various heights at a constant wavelength or various wavelengths at a comparable height, figuring out a wrinkle with high aspect ratio has more dispersive light and less straight light. It indicates that high aspect ratio is required to change the optical behavior and increase the optical path.

  • Among the various industrial robots, palletizing robots have received particular attention because of their higher productivity in accordance with technological progress. When designing a palletizing robot, the main components, such as the servo motors and reducers, should be properly selected to ensure its performance. In this study, a practical method for selecting the motors and reducers of a robot was proposed by performing the dynamic analysis of rigid-flexible multibody systems using ANSYS and ADAMS. In the first step, the links and frames were selected based on the structural analysis results obtained from ANSYS. Subsequently, a modal neutral file (MNF) with information on the flexible body was generated from the links and frames using modal analysis through ANSYS and APDL commands. Through a dynamic analysis of the flexible bodies, the specifications of the major components were finally determined by considering the required torque and power. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, the analysis results were compared with those of a rigid-body model. The comparison showed that rigid-flexible multibody dynamic analysis is much more useful than rigid body analysis, particularly for movements heavily influenced by gravity.

  • This paper contributed to the understanding of the effect of the blade relative position on performance of micro gravitational vortex turbine in free water surface. In a constant vortex flow, the rotation, voltage and current of micro vortex water turbine were measured according to the position change of the blade installed at the relative vortex height (y/hv) ranging from 0 to 0.778 below the free water surface. The flow rate ranged from 0.0063 to 0.00662 m3/s. The results of the experiments showed that relative positions of the blade affected the performance of vortex water turbine because the distributions of incoming flow velocity and turbulence intensity were changed. The highest amount of the energy generated by the vortex water turbine occurred in the relative vortex height ranging from 0.111 to 0.222. The output power at the relative vortex height of 0.111 was about 2.4 times larger than the relative vortex height of 0.588 below the free water surface.

  • A Se-containing Cu/SnSe2/ZnSe precursor was employed to introduce S to the precursor to form Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 (CZTSSe) film. The morphology of CZTSSe films strongly varied with two different pre-annealing environments: S and N2. The CZTSSe film with S pre-annealing showed a dense morphology with a smooth surface, while that with N2 pre-annealing showed a porous film with a plate-shaped grains on the surface. CuS and Cu2Sn(S,Se)3 phases formed during the S pre-annealing stage, while SnSe and Cu2SnSe3 phases formed during the N2 pre-annealing stage. The SnSe phase formed during N2 pre-annealing generated SnS2 phase that had plate shape and severely aggravated the morphology of CZTSSe film. The power conversion efficiency of the CZTSSe solar cell with S pre-annealing was low (1.9%) due to existence of Zn(S.Se) layer between CZTSSe and Mo substrate. The results indicated that S pre-annealing of the precursor was a promising method to achieve a good morphology for large area application.

  • Sense-Making Theory gives persuasive power to information seeking behavior while acknowledging the diversity of subjects. It is being used as a theory and methodology to explain the phenomenon of information seeking in various temporal and spatial contexts related to the communication of individuals' inner realms, face-to-face, organization, and mass communication. However, it is not to be a theory to explain the information seeking behavior of a group in that it explains the individual epistemological interpretation of the subjects. Also, the purpose of the theory was to establish a receiver-centered communication theory that constructs sense-making by itself, away from the receiver who unilaterally accepts the sender's information from the perspective of communication theory. However, Dervin accepted the existence of object information without explaining the relationship between the recipient's external information and the receiver. Owing to the establishing his concept of information following the Popper(1972)'s world concept, its object of observation is not World III(objective content of thought), but the process of sense making in which World II(psychological world) receives information generated in World III. In this context, Dervin's theory is not to explain the communication behavior at a group level.

  • Carbon finance is the investment in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission reduction projects in developing countries and countries with economies in transition within the framework of the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) or Joint Implementation (JI) and with creation of financial instruments, i.e., carbon credits, which are tradable in carbon market. The additional revenue generated from carbon credits will increase the bankability of projects by reducing the risks of commercial lending or grant finance. Meantime, it has also demonstrated numerous opportunities for collaborating across sectors, and has served as a catalyst in bringing climate issues to bear in projects relating to rural electrification, renewable energy, energy efficiency, urban infrastructure, waste management, pollution abatement, forestry, and water resource management. Establishing additionality is essential for successful CDM project development. One of the key steps is the investment analysis. As guided by UNFCCC, financial indicators such as IRR, NPV, DSCR etc are most commonly used in both Option II & Option III. However, economic indicator such as Economic Internal Rate of Return(EIRR) are often overlooked in Option III even it might be more suitable for the project. This could be due to the difficulties in economic analysis. Although Asian Development Bank(ADB) has given guidelines in evaluating EIRR, there are still large amount of works have to be carried out in estimating the economic, financial, social and environmental benefits in the host country. This paper will present a case study of a CDM development of a 18 MW hydro power plant with carbon finance option in central Vietnam. The estimation of respective factors in EIRR, such as Willingness to Pay(WTP), shadow price etc, will be addressed with the adjustment to Vietnam local provincial factors. The significance of carbon finance to Vietnam renewable energy development will also be addressed.

  • Thermoelectric (TE) materials working in radioisotope thermoelectric generators are irradiated by neutrons throughout its service; thus, investigating the neutron irradiation stability of TE devices is necessary. Herein, the influence of neutron irradiation with fluences of 4.56 × 1010 and 1 × 1013 n/cm2 by pulsed neutron reactor on the electrical and thermal transport properties of n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 and p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 thermoelectric alloys prepared by cold-pressing and molding is investigated. After neutron irradiation, the properties of thermoelectric materials fluctuate, which is related to the material type and irradiation fluence. Different from p-type thermoelectric materials, neutron irradiation has a positive effect on n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 materials. This result might be due to the increase of carrier mobility and the optimization of electrical conductivity. Afterward, the effects of p-type and n-type TE devices with different treatments on the output performance of TE devices are further discussed. The positive and negative effects caused by irradiation can cancel each other to a certain extent. For TE devices paired with p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 and n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 thermoelectric legs, the generated power and conversion efficiency are stable after neutron irradiation.
