  • This paper describes the varying material model, the analysis method and the software development for reinforced concrete circular columns confined by spiral or hoop transverse steel reinforcement and subjected to eccentric loading. The widely used Mander model of concentric loading is adapted here to eccentric loading by developing an auto-adjustable stress-strain curve based on the eccentricity of the axial load or the size of the compression zone to generate more accurate interaction diagrams. The prediction of the ultimate unconfined capacity is straight forward. On the other hand, the prediction of the actual ultimate capacity of confined concrete columns requires specialized nonlinear analysis. This nonlinear procedure is programmed using C-Sharp to build efficient software that can be used for design, analysis, extreme event evaluation and forensic engineering. The software is equipped with an elegant graphics interface that assimilates input data, detail drawings, capacity diagrams and demand point mapping in a single sheet. Options for preliminary design, section and reinforcement selection are seamlessly integrated as well. Improvements to KDOT Bridge Design Manual using this software with reference to AASHTO LRFD are made.

  • Full scale durability test in the laboratory is an essential of any fatigue life evaluation of components or structures of the automotive vehicle. Component testing is particularly important in today's highly competitive industries where the design to reduce weight and production costs must be balanced with the necessity to avoid expensive service failure. Generally, hydraulic road simulator is used to carry out the fatigue test and the vibration test. In this paper, the algorithm and software to realize the real road profile are developed. The operation software for simultaneously controlled multi-axial road simulator is developed and the input and output data are displayed window based PC controller in the real time. Futhermore, the software to generate the real road profile are developed. The validity of the software are verified by applying the belgian road, the city road, the highway, and the gravel road. The results of the above experiment show that the real road profiles are realized well after 10th iteration.

  • This study investigated the relationship between land cover and the water quality variables in the rivers, which are located in the Yamaguchi prefecture of West Japan. The study area included 12 catchments covering $5,809\;Km^2$. pH, dissolved oxygen, suspended solid, E. coli, total nitrogen and total phosphorus were considered as river water quality variables. Satellite data was applied to generate land cover map. For linking alterations in land cover (at whole catchment and buffer zone levels) and the river water quality variables, multiple regression modeling was applied. The results indicated that non-spatial attribute (%) of land cover types (at whole catchment level) consistently explained high amounts of variation in biological oxygen demand (72%), suspended solid (72%) and total nitrogen (87%). At buffer zone-scale, multiple regression models that were developed to represent the linkage between the alterations of land cover and the river water quality variables could also explain high level of total variations in suspended solid (86%) and total nitrogen (91%).

  • While XML is employed in a variety of fields, editing XML document is still hard for the beginners and ordinary individuals. In this paper, we present a syntax-directed editor which is designed to provide unprofessional XML users with easy guides of using XML document. Along with the definition, abstract syntax (data structure of syntax-directed editor) would be explicitly defined. Components of the editor will be projected according to the projected definition of the abstract syntax rule of this paper. Moreover we show that the automatic generation of the abstract syntax rules coming from DTD would enhance the use of XML syntax-directed editor in faster and more precise ways. It could be easier to generate XML syntax-directed editor through a structure of abstract syntax and standard procedure of manufacturing syntax-directed editor.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors negatively affecting college life, to investigate the perception gap between housing types, and to generate preliminary data for increasing residential satisfaction of students who live in temporary housing(e.g., dormitory or one-room). The utilized research methods included a questionnaire survey and an in-depth interview. The college students, especially from other regions, experienced more financial difficulties than others. They managed their tuition and living expense/allowance by parents supports and other sources(e.g., scholarship, arbeit, work in college, loan etc.). The reasons to choose dormitory, as temporary housing, were short distance to college and low costs. In case of one room, independent life was main reason to choose. Gender differences affected to the decision, moving away from present temporary housing. For example, male students preferred an independent life and a short commuting distance, while female students preferred an independent life and a safe life. Thus, considering the origin and gender differences of residents, dormitory planning needed to develop plans allowing independent life and to choose appropriate site for the purpose. In case of planning one room apartment, concerns for safety and landscape were more important than other factors.

  • In this paper, practical biped humanoid robot is presented, designed, and modeled by fuzzy system. The humanoid robot is a popular research area in robotics because of the high adaptability of a walking robot in an unstructured environment. But owing to the lots of circumstances which have to be taken into account it is difficult to generate stable and natural walking motion in various environments. As a significant criterion for the stability of the walk, ZMP (zero moment point) has been used. If the ZMP during walking can be measured, it is possible for a biped humanoid robot to realize stable walking by a control method that makes use of the measured ZMP. In this study, measuring the ZMP trajectories in real time situations throughout the whole walking phase on the flat floor and slope are conducted. And the obtained ZMP data are modeled by fuzzy system to explain empirical laws of the humanoid robot. By the simulation results, the fuzzy system can be effectively used to model practical humanoid robot and the acquired trajectories will be applied to the humanoid robot for the human-like walking motions.

  • Preflex beam is a method of construction to hold the Pre-compressive stresses over the concrete pier by the Preflexion load. During the fabrication of the girder, welding causes the welding residual stresses. The welding residual stresses must be relieved to generate the accurate compressive pre-stresses that is designed. On this study, to find out the thermal distribution characteristics on the girder by welding, both the three-dimensional finite element analysis and the two-dimensional finite element analysis in a quasi-steady state is carried out. After comparing with each result between the three-dimensional analysis and the two-dimensional analysis, finite element analysis is carried out against the actual girder and analyze welding thermal distribution characteristic over the preflex beam and obtain the input data for the analysis of the welding residual stresses.

  • KOMPSAT (KOrea Multi-Purpose SATellite)-5 for the earth observation and scientific research is scheduled to launch in 2009. The second payload, AOPOD (Atmosphere Occultation and Precision Orbit Determination) system, consists of a space-borne dual frequency GPS receiver and a laser retro reflector. GPS radio occultations from AOPOD system can be used to generate profiles of refractivity, temperature, pressure and water vapor in the neutral atmosphere with a high vertical resolution. Also the radio occultation in the ionosphere provides an inexpensive tool of vertical electron density profile. Currently, many LEO missions with GPS radio occultation receivers are on orbit and more GPS occultation missions are planed to launch in the near future. In this paper, we simulated radio occultation measurements from KOMPSAT-5 and retrieved atmospheric profiles using the simulated data.

  • This paper proposes a cooling system using thermoelectric elements for improving the output of building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) modules. The temperature characteristics that improve the output of a BIPV system have rarely been studied up to now but some researchers have proposed a method using a ventilator. The efficiency of a ventilator depends mainly on the weather such as wind, irradiation etc. Because this cooling system is so sensitive to the velocity of the wind, it is unable to operate in the nominal operating cell temperature (NOCT) or the standard test condition (STC) which allow it to generate the maximum output. This paper proposes a cooling system using thermoelectric elements to solve such problems. The temperature control of thermoelectric elements can be controlled independently in an outdoor environment because it is performed by a micro-controller. In addition, it can be operated around the NOCT or the STC through an algorithm for temperature control. Therefore, the output of the system is increased and the efficiency is raised. This paper proves the validity of the proposed method by comparing the data obtained through experiments on the cooling systems of BIPV modules using a ventilator and thermoelectric elements.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient large item generation algorithm that overcomes the problem of the existing algorithm for making large items from quantitative attributes. The proposed algorithm splits dataset into variable size of intervals by min_split_support and merges the intervals according to the support of each interval. It reflects characteristic of data to generated large items and can generate finer large items than the existing algorithm. It is shown through the performance evaluation that our proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithm.
