  • Astrocytomas are tumors that arise from brain cells called astrocytes. These tumors can occur anywhere in the brain and spinal cord. Clinical features and symptoms depend on the location of the tumor and the victim's age. Patients with cerebellar tumors have symptoms that include headache, vomiting and unsteadiness in walking. Tumors in the cerebral hemispheres commonly present with seizures: occasionally there is weakness of the arms and legs. We treated a 33 year-old male patient who complained of dyarthria, TMD, nausea, dysphagia, and facial numbness etc. he had frequent undergone general weakness before above symptoms occurred. He was diagnosed as astrocytoma and multifocal inf and responded well to treatment with Chukdamtang(滌痰湯). acupunture and oriental physical stimulations etc.

  • Spinal muscular atrophies are inherited neurodegenerative disorders affecting anterior hem cells. There are various problems, especially weakness of respiratory muscle and abnormal reaction to muscle relaxants during the general anesthesia. And gingival hyperplasia can make the proper airway management difficult. Experience with anesthetic management in a patient with spinal muscular atrophy combined with gingival hyperplasia has been very rare. We report the anesthetic experience of a wheel-chair-bound child, who underwent gingivectomy under general anesthesia. The child was safely managed with fibroscopic nasotracheal intubation under sevoflurane without muscle relaxants. Also, there was no deterioration of her underlying neurologic conditions.

  • Objectives : There were few reports on Erysipelas, from Secondary Skin Infection after Herpes Zoster. We treated Erysipelas, from Secondary Skin Infection after Herpes Zoster with Oriental medical approach, and got a significant results. So We are reporting this case. Methods : Herb medication, acupuncture treatment were applied for treating patient`s chief symptoms (erythema, heat sensation, swelling, pain, itching and general weakness) Results : The patient was 5-year-old boy who had the symptoms caused by Erysipelas, which was caused by secondary skin infection after herpes zoster. He had erythema, heat sensation, swelling, pain, itching and general weakness. We judged him as Soyangin(少陽人), and prescribed Hyeongbangsaback-san. After he took Hyeongbangsaback-san, the symptom and general condition were improved. In this report, we want to explain the healing process and the result of the treatment of Erysipelas. Conclusions : More study about oriental treatment on Erysipelas, from Secondary Skin Infection after Herpes Zoster is needed.

  • The concrete stiffness matrices of membrane elements used in the finite element analysis of wall-type structures are reviewed and discussed. The behavior of cracked reinforced concrete membrane elements is first described by summarizing the constitutive laws of concrete and steel established for the two softened truss models (the rotating-angle softened-truss model and the fixed-angle softened-truss model). These constitutive laws are then related to the concrete stiffness matrices of the two existing cracking models (the rotating-crack model and the fixed-crack model). In view of the weakness in the existing models, a general model of the matrix is proposed. This general matrix includes two Poisson ratios which are not clearly understood at present. It is proposed that all five material properties in the general matrix should be established by new biaxial tests of panels using proportional loading and strain-control procedures.

  • Objectives : This report is about a case of a patient who improvement in general condition, Infection and dysphagia after poststroke seizure. Methods : We observed a patiet who received treatment in hospital because of stroke sequelae. Her symptoms were left hemiplegia, right hemiparesis, dysphagia, dyspnea, sputum and general weakness, and acupunture and herb medicine were applied. Results : Stroke is the most common cause of seizures in the elderly. The impact of late onset GTC(generalized tonic-clonic) seizures is associated with worse outcomes. Conclusion : The patient of this case was attacked by intracerebal hemorrhage, cerebaral infarction and GTC seizures. Since then her neurologic disorder was progressed. As the treatments of the patient, herb medication and acupuncture therapy were applied and she got a wide improvement of dysphagia, dyspnea, URI sign and general condition.

  • Rhododendron species is one of the largest and most diverse genera in the plant kingdom, comprising over 800 species and existing all over the globe. Grayanotoxin intoxication is caused by ingestion of honey and flowers. Grayanotoxin exists in honey, flowers, pollen, and nectar of the Rhododendron species. Grayanotoxin-intoxicated patients may present with nausea, vomiting, dizziness, weakness, hypotension, bradycardia, and syncope for several hours. We report a case of grayanotoxin intoxication associated with mental changes. A 9-year-old male presented with impaired consciousness and delirium 26 hours after eating about 10 rhododendron sclippenbachii flowers. A brain MRI and EEG were normal. Parenteral fluids were administered and these symptoms resolved completely in 17 hours.

  • The field of critical care medicine has flourished, but an unfortunate result of improved patient survival in the intensive care unit is the occurrence of certain acquired neuromuscular disorders. During the last two decades, various neuromuscular disorders were recognized as common causes of weakness occurring in critically ill patients. The two most common disorders are an acute quadriplegic myopathy predominantly associated with the use of intravenous corticosteroids and neuromuscular junction blocking agents and severe systemic illness termed critical illness myopathy(CIM), and an axonal sensorimotor polyneuropathy termed critical illness polyneuropathy. I will review briefly about general components of the CIM.

  • Inherited muscle diseases are heterogeneous with varying genetic etiologies and present with common symptoms and signs, including weakness, motor developmental delay, and hypotonia. To diagnose these various diseases, a meticulous family and clinical history, physical and neurological examinations, laboratory findings with electromyography, muscle biopsy, and genetic testing are needed. Here, I review several inherited muscle diseases, with a focus on muscular dystrophy in children and its genetics and general management.

  • We present a rare case of malignant lymphoma developing from the wall of chronic empyema thoracis. A 54-year old man with a 35 year history of tuberculosis empyema was admitted due to right chest pain and general weakness for 2 months. Under the impression of chronic empyema thoracis with destroyed right lung and tumor on posterior costophrenic sulcus, pleuropneumonectomy including tumor was performed as a single procedure through a right thoracotomy. The tumor arose from the thickened pleura, and it was histologically and immunologically diffuse large cell[non-cleaved] B-cell non-Hodgkin`s lymphoma [NHL]

  • Carcinosarcoma is the group of neoplasms possessing both carcinomatous parenchyma and sarcomatous stroma. These tumors are relatively uncommon and may arise in variable organs. In this case, a 62-year-old male patient was admitted to our department due to left chest pain and general weakness of three months duration. The chest x-ray revealed egg-sized, relatively well defined lobulated soft tissue mass in left paracardiac area. Left lower lobectomy was performed under the preoperative impression of lung cancer. Pathologic examination of the resected lung revealed carcinosarcoma without regional lymph node metastasis. Patient is doing well at present without any chemotherapy.
