  • A total of twenty-nine species and one species variety belonging to 12 genera was isolated from 30 samples of molasses on 1% glucose(10 genera, 22 species and 1 variety) and 50% sucrose(7, 21 and 1) Czapek's agar at $25^{\circ}C$ media. Aspergillus, Mucor, Mycosphaerella and Penicillium were the most common genera on the two types of media. From the above genera, the most prevalent species were: Aspergillus flavus, A. fumigatus, A. niger, Mycosphaerella tassiana, Penicillium chrysogenum, P. oxalicum and P. purpurogenum. Also, some species were only isolated on 50% sucrose such as Eurotium amstelodami, E. chevalieri, E. repens, Humicola fuscoatra, Penicillium aurantiogriseum and P. puberulum. About 65 fungal isolates isolated from 50% sucrose agar were tested for their ability to produce invertase enzyme in liquid medium and 93.8% of the isolates could produce this enzyme. From the positive isolates, 32 showed high invertase activity, 21 had moderate activity and the remaining 8 isolates were of weak activity. Sixty isolates of Aspergillus, Emericella, Eurotium, Mycosphaerella and Penicillium from the preceding study were screened for the presence of their respective mycotoxins. Larva of brine shrimp(Artema sauna L.) were used for toxicity test of the fungal crude extracts. Three isolates out of 60 tested were toxic. Using thin-layer chromatographic technique, 5 different known mycotoxin were detected aflatoxins : B1, B2, G1, G2 and citrinin.

  • The Kashmir Himalaya, known for its indigenous and endemic flora, also provides home to a large number of exotic plants, which exhibit a wide taxonomical and distributional stretch. Although, some preliminary studies have been carried out in the region on some aspects of its exotic flora, the inventorization and documentation of its exotic have received a little or negligible attention. There is a lot of scope of these exotic plant species in Kashmir valley, but lack of authentic identification has been as a big hurdle in their scientific management. It is in this backdrop that the present floristic study was carried out to identify, inventorize, document and characterize the exotic plant species grown in the Valley. The present study has revealed that Kashmir Valley grows 317 exotic plant species, which belong to 209 genera in 85 families. Dicotyledons are the largest group, represented by 252 species in 163 genera and 67 families. Monocotyledons comprise 52 species in 37 genera and 13 families. Gymnosperms are the smallest group, with 13 species distributed in 9 genera and 5 families. Asteraceae is the largest family containing 33 exotic species.

  • The International Committee for Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV), which was formed over 30 years ago, aims to develop a single, universal taxonomic scheme for all viruses or, in other words, "the classification of viruses and the assignment of names to taxa". Plant Virus taxonomy is in charge of Plant Virus Subcommittee, a substructure of the ICTV. The ICTV has been most successfully pursuing that aim and its mammoth 'Seventh Report' records details of the names it has collated and approved, and of the classification, it has devised. The current 7th ICTV report published in 2000 contains plant viruses of 951 species in 79 genera in 17 families, though 24 of the 79 genera are floating genera, that is, they are not included in any established families. Proposed name of new or existing viruses are vote for the accepted taxonomic proposals by ICTV Executive Committee meeting. The approved results have been published as the ICTV reports providing standard names and taxa of viruses all over the world. A number of new plant viruses have been identified or reclassified in the genus or species level, and new genera and families have been proposed.(중략)

  • Excessive growth of phytoplankton is a common and severe problem in intensively farmed pangasiid catfish (Pangasius hypophthalmus) culture ponds. It can lead to cyanobacterial blooms, reduced fish growth, bad-tasting fish flesh, and lower market demand. To investigate how to manage undesirable phytoplankton growth, we evaluated three stocking strategies in nine rural fishponds (0.020-0.022 ha) owned by various farmers: a pangasiid catfish mono culture (treatment 1, $T_1$), and pangasiid catfish-silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) polycultures at two stocking ratios of 1:1 (treatment 2, $T_2$) and 2:1 (treatment 3, $T_3$). The total density of all ponds was approximately 30,000 fishes/ha. Monoculture ($T_1$) resulted in significantly higher (p < 0.05) nutrient levels (nitrate and phosphate) in ponds than did polyculture ($T_2$ and $T_3$). Nutrient loads increased with culture time, resulting in increased growth of phytoplankton, including Cyanophyceae (9 genera), Chlorophyceae (15 genera), Bacillariophyceae (8 genera), and Euglenophyceae (3 genera). The introduction of silver carp as a co-species helped to regulate phytoplankton growth and to improve the water quality of pangasiid catfish culture ponds.

  • The objective of this study was to discuss the characteristics of the moss flora of Mt. Deogyu located on the border of the Jeonbuk and Kyungnam provinces in Korea. A total of 21 field surveys were carried out at various sites in the mountain area from August 2007 to September 2008. All the collected materials were processed into voucher specimens and were currently deposited in the herbarium at Chonbuk National University (JNU). In this study, we collected and identified 158 moss taxa, which included 156 species, 1 subsp. and 1 var. of 96 genera and 37 families. Unconfirmed taxa in this study, but previously recorded, belonged to 25 taxa, which included 13 families, 19 genera and 25 species. In addition, 183 taxa were found on Mt. Dreogyu, which belonged to 37 families, 101 genera, 1 subsp. and 1 var. The habitat of each collection was examined and the classification system of Ignatov et al. (2006) was used. New vernacular names of 6 families and 11 genera were then determined. Six species, formerly thought be only in North Korea, were shown to be present on Mt. Deogyu, which included Bucklandiella laeta, Anomobryum filiforme var. concinnatum, Herzogiella turfacea, Brachythecium rutabulum, Eurhynchium angustirete and Campylidium hispidulum.
