Nano-porous ceramic membranes was synthesized by the sol-gel method. Gas permeation of hydrogen and nitrogen was determined by single composition gas. Pore size $0.1{\mu}m$ and porosity 32% of flat type ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ substrate was manufactured. An intermediate ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ layer with pore size of 4 nm was formed by dip-coating. Polymeric silica sol was synthesized by acid catalyzed hydrolysis and condensation of tetra-ethyl-ortho-silicate. Supported membranes on alumina were prepared by dipping and calcining. He, $N_2$ permeation experiments with nanoporous sol-gel modified supported ceramic membranes were peformed to determine the gas transport characteristics. $He/N_2$ permselectivity around $100{\sim}160$ and helium permeation in the order of $10^{-7}mol/m^2{\cdot}s{\cdot}Pa$ were measured in the temperature range of $303{\sim}363K$.
The control of microstructure is critical for the porous fuel particles used for infiltrating actinide nuclides. This study concerns the effect of heating processes on properties and microstructure of the fuel particles. The uniform gel precursor beads were synthesized by a microfluidic sol-gel process and then the porous $CeO_2$ microspheres, as a surrogate for the ceramic nuclear fuel particles, were obtained by heating treatment of the gel precursors. The fabricated $CeO_2$ microspheres have a narrow size distribution and good sphericity due to the feature of microfluidics. The effects of heating processes parameters, such as heating mode and peak temperatures on the properties of microspheres were studied in detail. An optimized heating mode and the peak temperature of $650^{\circ}C$ were selected to produce porous $CeO_2$ microspheres. The optimized heating mode can avoid the appearance of broken or crack microspheres in the heating process, and as-prepared porous microspheres were of suitable pore size distribution and pore volume for loading minor actinide (MA) solution by an infiltration method that is used for fabrication of MA-bearing nuclear fuel beads. After the infiltration process, $1000^{\circ}C$ was selected as the final temperature to improve the compressive strength of microspheres.
Mesoporous silica was prepared from hydrothermal synthesis using gel mixture of tetraethylorthosilcate (TEOS) as silica source and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMABr) as a surfactant. In the optimum synthesis cause, molar ratio of template and silica changed. The surface and structure properties of mesoporous silica were determined by XRD, SEM, TEM and BET. Also, surface potential of mesoporous silica was measured using zeta potential. $N_2$ adsorption isotherm characteristics, including the specific surface area ($S_{BET}$), total pore volume $V_T$), and average pore diameter ($D_{BJH}$), were determined by BET. As a result, SBET of $100m^2/g{\sim}1500m^2/g$ was determined from the $N_2$ adsorption isotherm. Also, the average pore diameter was 2 nm∼4 nm. Mesoporous silica's surface potential of minus charge was determined from zeta potential.
LAS (lithium aluminosilicate) sol was synthesized using the hydrolysis-condensation reaction of TEOS, chelated Al(OBus)3 and LiNO3 with H2O in alcohol (ethanol+2-propanol) medium. Lowering Li content by a factor of 1/2 significantly enhanced densification and retarded the crystallization of LAS gel by ~30$0^{\circ}C$. Dense LAS specimen with essentially pore-free microstructure was obtained by sintering the sol-gel derived gel at 80$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 h and annealing at 120$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. Similary, a mixed colloidal processing was attempted as a convenient, alternative route for the fabrication of dense LAS sintered body. The $\beta$-spodumene seeding (~0.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) in the sol-gel derived LAS modified the sequence of phase transformations and lowered the temperature of crystallization by ~12$0^{\circ}C$. Combining the epitaxial seeding with the sol-gel process, we could lower the crystallization temperature to the sintering temperature range (~80$0^{\circ}C$) and, demonstrate a possibility of making the viscous sintering/crystallization as a continuous as a continuous unit process.
Chiffon cakes were prepared using various concentrations of aloe gel to develop functional baking procedures. The quality characteristics of chiffon cakes prepared after addition of 20%, 40%, or 60% (w/w) aloe gel, substituting for the same levels of wheat flour, were investigated. No significant weight difference between cakes was observed. The height of cakes containing aloe gel was significantly greater than that of control cakes. The baking loss rate (BLR) of aloe gel decreased as the amount of gel increased, and cakes prepared using 60% (w/w) aloe gel had the lowest BLR. Moisture contents of cakes prepared using aloe gel were higher than that of control cakes. Cakes with 60% (w/w) aloe gel had the highest moisture content. The pore size of cakes with 60% (w/w) aloe gel was the smallest of all groups. Crumb color became whiter as the proportion of aloe gel increased. Lightness (L value) of control cake was lower than that of cake containing aloe gel. Redness (a value) of aloe chiffon cakes increased as the proportion of aloe gel rose. Yellowness (b value) of cakes with 40% (w/w) aloe gel was significantly higher than that of the control group. Other cakes showed no difference in b value compared with control cake. Hardness in all cakes prepared with aloe gel was significantly lower than that of the control group. Adhesiveness of control cake was significantly lower than that of other cakes. No significant between-group difference in springiness was observed. The cohesiveness of cakes with 40% (w/w) aloe gel was significantly lower than that of the control group and that of cakes with 20% (w/w) aloe gel. The gumminess and chewiness of control cakes were significantly higher than those of other cakes. The yellowness of cake with 60% (w/w) aloe gel was significantly lower than that of the other groups. Pore size decreased after the addition of aloe gel. There was no significant difference in appearance among cakes thus, all cakes were acceptable to potential consumers. Although no perceptible difference in aloe odor was evident, cakes with 60% (w/w) aloe gel scored significantly lower in flavor acceptance compared with other cakes. No significant between-cake difference in taste acceptance, perceived moisture level, or texture acceptability was observed. Cakes with 40% and 60% (both w/w) aloe gel were of significantly higher density than other cakes. Overall, the acceptability of cakes with 60% (w/w) aloe gel was lower than that of other cakes. Ultimately, the results indicated that quality can be enhanced by adding less than 40% (w/w) aloe gel to chiffon cakes as a substitute for wheat flour.
Titanium dioxide particles with three different average sizes, prepared by three different methods, were incorporated into silica gel pores by impregnation. The titanium dioxide incorporated into the silica gel pores was photoionized by 240-400 nm irradiation at 77 K by a one-photon process to from trapped hole centers on OH group and trapped electron centers on titanium which were detected by electron paramagnetic resonance at 77 K. During the impregnation the smallest size range of TiO2 particles can be incorporated into silica gels with 2.5-1.5 nm pores. However, the largest size range of TiO2 particles can only be incorporated into silica gels with 6-15 nm pores and not into silica gels with 2.5-4 nm pores. The photoyield and stability of photoinduced hole and electron centers depends on the silica pore sizes of silica gels and surface area as well as on the TiO2 loading. In large pore silica gels and large particle size of TiO2, photoinduced charge separation reaches to a plateau at shorter irradiation times and the trapped hole and electron centers are more stable to decay.
A single layer ultrafiltration(UF) ceramic membrane was prepared using boehmite sol. Boehmite was synthesized using a typical sol-gel process with optimization of the viscosity, pH, molar ratio of aluminum isopropoxide(AIP) and $HNO_3$. Boehmite sol was coated on a microfiltration(MF) support using the dip-coating method. MF support was dipped into the boehmite sol with a withdrawal speed of 5 mm/s and was maintained for 10 s in the boehmite sol, resulting in a uniform UF membrane layer of $10{\mu}m$ thickness. The porosity of the obtained membrane was measured and found to be 41.2%; the pore size was found to range from 80~100 nm, corresponding to the pore size of the UF membrane. The flux of the obtained membrane was initially 540 $L/m^2h$ and approximately 85% of the initial flux was recovered using a periodic back-flushing process.
In this study we report a rapid synthesis of nanoporous organo-functional silica (OFS) with unimodal and bimodal pore structures encompassing pores ranging from meso-to macroscale. The problems of tediousness and high production cost in the conventional syntheses are overcome by co-condensation of an inexpensive inorganic precursor, sodium silicate with an organosilane containing trimethyl groups. The insitu covalent anchoring of the non-polar trimethyl groups to the inner pore walls prohibits irreversible shrinkage of the wet-gel during microwave drying at ambient pressure and thus larger size pores (from ca. 20 to ca. 100 nm) can be retained in the dried silica. The drying process of the silylated wet-gels at an ambient pressure can be greatly accelerated upon microwave exposure instead of drying in an oven or furnace. Using this approach, anoporous and superhydrophobic silicas showing a wide variation in texture and morphology can be readily synthesized in roughly two hours. The effects of various sol-gel parameters solely on the textural properties of the organo-functional silica (OFS) have been investigated and discussed.
The synthesis behavior of nanoporous silica aerogel in the macroporous ceramic structure was observed using TEOS as a source material and glycerol as a DCCA(dry control chemical additive). Silica aerogel in the macroporous ceramic structure were synthesized through a sono-gel process. The wet gel in the macroporous ceramic structure were aged in ethanol for 72 h at $50^{\circ}C$. The aged wet gel was dried under supercritical drying condition. The addition of glycerol has a role of giving the uniform pore size distribution. The reproducibility of aerogel in the macroporous ceramic was improved in the glycerol(0.05 mol%) added to the silica sol and TEOS : $H_2O$=1 : 12.
We investigated the effects of silica gels on the reduction of the crystallization time for the purification of vancomycin. The shortest crystallization time for vancomycin was obtained when silica gel with a pore diameter of $40-60{\AA}$ and with a particle diameter of 230-400 mesh was used as the material. The use of silica gel as a surface area increasing material dramatically reduced the crystallization time four fold (6 h) when compared with the results where the surface area had not been similarly increased. In addition, the crystal size of vancomycin was decreased with the addition of silica gel. This improved crystallization process has a significant effect on the convenience and feasibility of the purification step for vancomycin.
