  • The change of interactions of anionic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and sodium tetradecyl sulfate(575) in the presence of electrolytes, to the chitosan-based polyelectrolyte(sol'n and gel phase) were studied. The chitosan gel used in this study were crosslinked with epichlorohydrin(ECH). Binding isotherms were determined by potentiometric technique using a surfactant ion selective solid-state electrode and the results were represented by using the sequence generating function(SGF) method. The results of binding isotherm were shown comparatively high cooperativity. The addition of electrolytes in the chitosan/SDS system resulted in a shift of the binding to higher free surfactant concentration because of screen effect by the electrolytes. Degree of binding of chitosan gel was higher than that of chitosan sol'n. And also a conformational phase transition of the chitosan gel in the presence of electrolytes has been investigated.

  • The gel electrolytes were prepared with sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid, where hydrophilic fumed silica was used as a gelling agent. The influences of gel electrolyte on performance of the valve regulated lead acid (VRLA) batteries were investigated employing capacity tests, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The initial capacities of the sulfuric gel VRLA batteries were higher than that of phosphoric gel VRLA batteries. The sulfuric gel VRLA battery using 1.210 specific gravity of sulfuric acid with hydrophilic fumed silica exhibited the highest capacity of 0.828Ah. In the impedance measurements, the ohmic and charge transfer resistances for the phosphoric gel VRLA batteries were higher thanthat of sulfuric gel batteries. The morphology of electrodes of phosphoric gel VRLA batteries were more deteriorated in the SEM image.

  • We prepared an ionic gel polymer electrolyte for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) without leakage problem. Triiodide compound (BTDI) was synthesized by the reaction of benzene tricarbonyl trichloride with diethylene glycol monotosylate and subsequent substitution of tosylate by iodide using NaI. Bisimidazole was prepared by the reaction of imidazole with the triethylene glycol ditosylate under strongly basic condition provided by NaH. BTDI and bisimidazole dissolved in an ionic liquid were injected into the cells and permeated into the $TiO_2$ nanopores. In situ crosslinking was then carried out by heating to form a network structure of poly(imidazolium iodide), thereby converting the ionic liquid electrolytes to a gel or a quasi-solid state. A monomer (BTDI and bisimidazole) concentration in the electrolytes of as low as 30 wt% was sufficient to form a stable gel type electrolyte. The DSSCs based on the gel polymer electrolytes showed a power conversion efficiency of as high as 1.15% with a short circuit current density of $5.69\;mAcm^{-2}$, an open circuit voltage of 0.525 V, and a fill factor of 0.43.

  • Flexible zinc-air batteries have many merits, including low cost, high safety, environmentally friendliness applicability, etc. One of the key factors to improve the performance of flexible zinc-air batteries is to use a gel electrolyte. In this study, gel electrolytes were synthesized from potato, sweet potato, and corn starch. In a comparison of each starch, the corn starch-based gel electrolyte showed the highest discharge capacity of 12.41 mAh/cm2 in 20 mA and 6.47 mAh/cm2 in 30 mA. It also delivered a higher specific discharge capacity of 7.06 mAh/cm2 than the other materials after 100° bending. In addition, the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was analyzed to calculate the ionic conductivity. The potato, sweet potato, and corn starch-based gel electrolytes showed electrolyte resistances (Re) of 0.306, 0.298, and 0.207 Ω, respectively. In addition, the corn starch-based gel electrolyte delivered the highest ionic conductivity of 0.121 S cm-1 among the other gel electrolytes. Thus, the corn starch-based gel electrolyte was verified to improve the performance of flexible zinc-air batteries.

  • The optimum polymer gel electrolyte composition ratio was 23 : 66 : 11 wt% of P(VdF-co-HFP) : PVP =20 : 3), (PC: EC =44 : 22) and TEABF$_4$. And the optimal thickness of polymer gel electrolyte was 50 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The electrochemical characteristics result of unit cell were 31.41 Fig of specific capacitance, and 3.21$\times$10$^{-3}$ S/cm of ion conductivity. Ion conductivity of polymer gel electrolytes decreased according to added PVP through impedance analysis, and it was higher in 7 wt%, but electrochemical characteristics of unit cell were better in 3 wt% PVP. And for excellent ion conductivity of polymer gel electrolytes, the use of a thin layer electrolyte(20 $\mu\textrm{m}$) was an effective method, but with unit cell application, the best thickness was 50 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Unit cell showed higher capacitance and more stable electrochemical performance when hot pressed between polymer gel electrolyte and electrode. This results from enhancement of the physical contact between the electrode and the polymer gel electrolyte and good accessibility of the liquid electrolyte to the electrode surface.

  • Acrylate polymer gel electrolytes containing N-methoxymethyl-N-methylpyrrolidium bis (trifluoro - methansulfonyl) imide (MPSI) as an ionic liquid were synthesized by solution polymerization in the presence of carbonate solvent. ionic conductivity and mechanical properties of the polymer gel electrolytes were investigated by impedance analyzer and universal testing machine as a function of the amount of polymer, and ionic liquid and type of crosslinker. The maximum ionic conductivity of polymer gel electrolytes was 0.8 mS/cm at $25^{\circ}C$ with 15 wt% of polymer, 30 wt% of ionic liquid and 5 wt% of crosslinker. The mechanical analysis showed that the tensile strength of polymer gel electrolytes increased with additional polymer contents and had the maximum value of 0.5 MPa with a reasonable ionic conductivity.

  • The corrosion property of aluminum by lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt is investigated in liquid and gel electrolytes consisting of ethylene carbonate/propylene carbonate/ethylmethyl carbonate/diethyl carbonate (20:5:55:20, vol %) with vinylene carbonate (2 wt %) and fluoroethylene carbonate (5 wt %) using conductivity measurement, cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. All corrosion behaviors are attenuated remarkably by using three gel electrolytes containing 3 wt % of hydrophilic and hydrophobic fumed silica. The addition of silica particles contributes to the increase in the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte, indicating temporarily formed physical crosslinking among the silica particles to produce a gel state. Cyclic voltammetry also gives lower anodic current responses at higher potentials for repeating cycles, confirming further corrosion attenuation or electrochemical stability. In addition, the degree of corrosion attenuation can be affected mainly by the electrolytic constituents, not by the hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity of silica particles.

  • Lithium p-[Methoxyoligo(ethyleneoxy)] benzenesulfonates (LiEOnBS) with different repeating unit of ethylene oxide were synthesized and were used for preparing gel-polymer electrolytes. The conductivities and lithium ion transference number were measured as a function of Li-salt concentration and repeating unit of ethylene oxide of the LiEOnBS. The maximum conductivity of the resulting gel-polymer electrolyte was found to be 4.89${\times}$10$\^$-4/ S/cm (LiEO7.3BS, 0.5 M) at 30$^{\circ}C$. The lithium ion transference number (t$\sub$Li$\sub$+//) measurement were performed by means of the combination do polarization and ac impedance methods in gel-polymer electrolytes. Lithium ion transference number was measured to be in the range of 0.75∼0.92 for the LiEOnBS containing gel-polymer electrolytes. The maximum t$\sub$Li$\sub$+// was obtained to be 0.92 for the 0.1 M LiEOnBS containing polymer electrolytes. The synthesized LiEOnBS showed single ion transport like characteristics when n was large than 3.

  • In recent years, electrochemical supercapacitors have attracted much attention due to their high power density, long life cycles, and high efficiency. Some supercapacitors using CNTs have been reported, but there are several issues to be resolved for further development of CNT based supercapacitors. One issue is time consuming procedures to prepare CNT films, which may provide poor control of CNT uniformity over the large area of the substrates. Another is new electrolytes replacing the conventional liquid electrolytes in supercapacitors. In this work, We have successfully demonstrated that spray deposition method of multiwalled CNT films using gel electroytes could be promising for CNT-based supercapacitors on ITO substrates. Specific capacitances using gel electrolyte reached up to 1.5 F/g and 9 mF/$cm^2$, and internal resistance was 28 ${\Omega}$. Specific capacitances and internal resistance of supercapacitors with gel electrolyte were better than or comparable to those with liquid electrolytes($KNO_3$, $Na_2SO_4$), indicating that gel electrolytes could replace liquid counterparts in CNT-based supercapacitors. Combined with gel electrolyte, spray deposition method could provide low cost and easily scalable process for high performance supercapacitors using CNT films on ITO for applications in display devices.
