  • Poly(ethyleneglycol diacrylate)(PEGDA) or 2-ethylhexyl acrylate(2EHA)-based gel polymer electrolytes(GPEs) which have a solid content in the range of 8~54 wt% were synthesized and their ionic conductivity and electrochemical properties were measured at room temperature. It was observed that the ionic conductivity over $1\times10^{-3}$ S/cm was obtained in a homogeneous PEGDA-based GPE with 21 wt% of solid content. However the electrochemical stability of the GPE was lower than that of a liquid electrolyte. The presence of AIBN initiator which can produce a N2 gas during polymerization process might be the reason of this low oxidation decomposition potential. As an alternative, benzoyl peroxide was used as an initiator and GPE with enhanced electrochemical stability was obtained. Finally, the formation of stable solid electrolyte interphase on a graphite anode was evidenced by cyclic voltammetry measurement.

  • This study was performed to analyze changes in the molecular structural and physical properties of modified corn starch, in which particle structure was broken using high impact planetary mill and ultra fine pulverizing techniques. The average diameter and specific surface area of the modditied corn starch after pulverization decreased 50% and increased 567%, respectively. Content of low molecular substances mersured using gel permeation chromatography (GPC) increased from 21.0% to 86.5% after pulverizing corn starch. Damaged starch content also increased from 9.63% to 83.57% after pulverizing corn starch. After pulverization, gel formation capacity corn starch was reduced compared to that of control by structure breakdown.

  • The fibrous material fraction as a by-product from the commercial aloe vera gel processing was obtained and freeze dried. The physicochemical characteristics such as the proximate composition, crystalline/surface structures and several physical functionalities including the water holding capacity (WHC), swelling capacity (SW), oil holding capacity (OHC), emulsion/foam properties and viscosity properties of this powdered sample (100 mesh) were investigated and analyzed by comparison with commercial $\alpha$-cellulose as a reference sample. The total dietary fiber content of powdered sample was very high as much as 87.5%, and the insoluble dietary and soluble dietary fiber content ratios were 77.6 and 22.4%, respectively. The FT-IR spectrum of powdered sample showed a typical polysaccharide property and exhibited a x-ray diffraction pattern for cellulose III and IV like structure. SW (8.24${\pm}$0.15 mL/g), WHC(6.40${\pm}$0.19 g water/g solid) and OHC(10.32${\pm}$0.29 g oil/g solid) of freeze dried aloe cellulose were about 3.3, 1.4 and 2 times higher than those of commercial $\alpha$-cellulose, respectively. Aloe cellulose (~2%, w/v) alone had no foam capacity while improved the foam stability of protein solution (1% albumin+0.5% $CaCl_{2}$) by factor of 300%. Emulsion capacity of 2%(w/v) aloe cellulose was about 70% level of 0.5%(w/v) xanthan gum, but its emulsion stability was about 1.2 times higher than that of xanthan gum. Also, aloe cellulose containing CMC (carboxyl methyl cellulose) of 0.3%(w/v) showed a very good dispersity. Aloe cellulose dispersion of above 1%(w/v) exhibited higher pseudoplasticity and concentration dependence than those of $\alpha$-cellulose dispersion, indicating the viscosity properties for new potential usage such as an excellent thickening agent.

  • We determined the radiation shielding properties for 10CaO-xPbO-(90-x) deteriorated silica gel (DSG) glass system (x = 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, and 45 mol.%). The mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) has been estimated at photon energies of 74.23, 97.12, 122, 662, 1173, and 1332 keV using a narrow beam X-ray attenuation and transmission experiment, the XCOM program, and a PHITS simulation. The obtained MAC values were applied to estimate the half value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), effective atomic number, and effective electron density. Results show that the MAC value of the studied glasses ranges between 0.0549 and 1.4415 cm2/g, increases with the amount of PbO, and decreases with increasing photon energy. The HVL and MFP values decrease with increasing PbO content and increase with increasing photon energy. The recycled glass, with the addition of PbO content (20-45 mol.%), exhibited excellent radiation shielding capabilities compared to standard barite and ferrite concretes and some glass systems. Moreover, the experimental radiation shielding parameters agree with the XCOM and PHITS values. This study suggests that this new waste-recycled glass is an effective and cost-saving candidate for X-ray and gamma-ray shielding applications.

  • This work demonstrates a new sol-gel approach for synthesizing PbO2-doped zirconia using zircon mineral precursors. The streamlined methodology enables straightforward fabrication of the doped zirconia composites. Comprehensive materials characterization was performed using XRD, SEM, and TEM techniques to analyze the crystal structure, microstructure, and morphology. Quantitative analysis of the XRD data provided insights into the nanoscale crystallite sizes achieved, along with their relationship to lattice imperfections. Furthermore, the gamma-ray shielding capacity for the PbO2-doped zirconia samples was estimated by the Monte Carlo simulation, which proves an increase in the gamma ray shielding properties by raising the Pb concentration. The linear attenuation coefficient increased between 0.467 and 0.499 cm-1 (at 0.662 MeV) by increasing the Pb content between 11 and 21 wt%. By increasing the Pb content to 21 wt%, the synthesized composites' lead equivalent thickness reaches 2.49 cm. The radiation shielding properties for the synthesized composites revealed a remarkable performance against low and intermediate γ-ray photons, with radiation shielding capacity of 37.3 % and 21.4 % at 0.662 MeV and 2.506 MeV, respectively. As a result, the developed composites can be employed as an alternative shielding material in hospitals and radioactive zones.

  • Mung bean starch gel (Mook) and gel made from starch of cowpea are similar properties in texture. In order to elucidate the similarity between these two starch gels, some physicochemical properties of cowpea starch were compared with those of mung bean starch. Water bildings capacity of cowpea starch (183.6%) was a little low than that of mung bean starch (184.2%). The solobility, swelling power and optical transmitance of the cowpea starch showed a smiliar pattern to mung bean starch, but cowpea starch had a little lower solubility than mung bean starch. Amylogram of mung bean strach (4, 5, 6, 7%) shoved no peak viscosity but cowpea starch (4, 5, 6%) showed peak viscosity and both starches showed high viscosities when cooling. Cowpea and mung bean starches had the blue value of 0.41 and 0.47, the alkali number of 8.4 and 8.0, the amylose content of 30.5 and 32.1%, the molecular weight of amylose of 30,000 adn 29,258 and glucose unit per segment of amylopectin of 27.6 and 26.8 respectively. The shape of cowpea and mung bean strach granules were round and elliptical, and the mean vlalue of major axis, minor axis and the ratio of these were 20.7 and 21.8 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, 14.6 and 14.4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 1.42 and 1.51, respectively. The extent of retrogradation determined by the glucoamylase digestion method and syneresis showed that cowpea starch gel was larger than that syneresis showed than cowpea starch gel was larger than that of mung bean starch gel. The redults of X-ray diffraction studies showed A pattern for two starches, Diffraction peak of gels disappeared with gelatinization of starches but that of two starch gels storaged for 2 days at 5$^{\circ}C$ showed a similar patterm.

  • Hard coating solutions were prepared from glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) precursors with different molar ratios of 10:0, 9:1, 7:3, 5:5, 3:7, and 0:10, respectively, by the sol-gel method. The polycarbonate (PC) sheets were spin-coated, and cured at $130^{\circ}C$ for 3 h. The effect of the GPTMS:MPTMS molar ratios of the mixture was investigated on the properties of coating films. The highest pencil hardness and adhesion to PC sheets of coating films were found for solution with GPTMS:MPTMS molar ratio of 5:5. Also, the pencil hardness of coating films was increased with increasing the $H_2O$ content in the coating solutions.

  • Changes in protein content during oocyte development was measured and egg-specific protein was characterized from the eggs in Lucilia illustris. During normal development ovarian protein was rapidly increased at 72hr and reached maximum at 96hr after a protein meal, when the eggs were fully matured. Purified protein from the ovaries by gel filtration of DEAE-cellulose an Sephacryl S-200 was loaded on 7.5% native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and identified at ${R}_{f}$ 0.4 as egg-specific protein, which has a mol. wt of 110,000. A total of 13 amino acids in th egg-specific protein was identified and expecially asparagine, glutamic acid, and tyrosine were highly concentrated. Five fatty acids were also identified. It is suggested that there is a specific protein in the eggs of L. illustris except yolk protein synthesized and secreted by fat body.

  • Sol-gel binder was prepared by hydrolysis and condensation reaction using boehmite sol and methyltrimethoxysilane as a function of aging-time. The coating slurry was composed of a plate-shape alumina in the sol-gel binder for the EPD process, in which particles dispersed in the slurry were deposited on the electrode under an electric field due to the surface charge. We studied the effects of three parameters: the content of boehmite, the aging time, and the applied voltage, on the physical, thermal, and electrical properties of the hybrid composite films by EPD. The amount of boehmite was 10 ~ 20 wt% and the aging time was 0.5 ~ 72, with a fixed amount of plate-shape alumina of 10 wt%. The condition of applied voltage was 5 ~ 30 V with a distance of 2 cm between the electrode during the EPD process. We confirmed that a structure of hybrid composite films of well-ordered plate alumina was deposited on the substrate when the film was prepared using a sol-gel binder composed of 15 wt% boehmite with 1 hr aging time and EPD at 10 V. The process shows a weight loss of 7% at $500^{\circ}C$ in TGA and a breakdown voltage of 8 kV at $87{\mu}m$.

  • Yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) nanopowders were prepared by sol-gel method using zirconium-n-butoxide(ZNB) and yttrium nitrate as precursors. In addition, the effect of water content added during the hydrolysis reaction of ZNB was investigated on the phase composition and pore structure of the product powders. The phase composition of YSZ nanopowders with calcination temperatures showed the same trend, irrespective of $H_2O$ amounts added during the hydrolysis reaction of ZNB. All powders dried at $100^{\circ}C$ were amorphous and transformed to cubic phase at $400^{\circ}C$, which converted to tetragonal phase at $1,000^{\circ}C$. Monoclinic phase also appeared at $1,000^{\circ}C$. The powders showed the mixture of tetragonal and monoclinic phases from $1,000^{\circ}C$ to $1,400^{\circ}C$. The pore size distributions of the dried powders prepared with small amounts of water(less than or equal to $H_2O/ZNB=20$) showed mesopores, while those prepared with large amounts of water(greater than or equal to $H_2O/ZNB=50$) exhibited micropores.
