  • This paper is the study on stress analysis for tooth modification of high speed gear using a finite element method. Gear drives constitute very important mechanisms in transmitting mechanical power processes compromising several cost effective and engineering advantages. The load transmission occurred by the contacting surfaces arises variable elastic deformations which are being evaluated through finite element analysis. The automatic gear design program is developed to model gear shape precisely. This gear design system developed was used by pre-processor of FEM packages. The distribution of stresses at contacting surfaces was examined when gear tooth contacts. And this paper proposes method for the tooth modification after carrying out stress analysis using a finite element method.

  • Differential side bevel gears have been produced by machining process, but recently cold forging process for the bevel gear is under development in domestic industry. This study presents the possibility to form not only bevel gear but also spline gear at the same time using the experiment and numerical analysis. The preform shape is designed to form both bevel gear and spline gear simultaneously by the backward tracing scheme of the rigid-plastic finite element method(FEM). The experimental results confirm that the numerically-designed preform is satisfactory to form both bevel gear and spline gear. It is noted that the backward tracing scheme is helpful in designing preforms.

  • In this study, the spur gear with honeycomb lattice structures are designed. The pitch diameter and body length of the spur gear are Ø93 mm and 104.0 mm, respectively. The designed gear was printed using Powder bed fusion (PBF) 3D printer. The gear is 3D printed perfectly. Even the teeth and honeycombs of the gear were output in the same way as the design shape. The printed gear with honeycomb lattice structure has a 24% smaller cross-sectional area and 29% smaller volume and weight than conventional solid structure gears. The surface roughness is approximately 4.5㎛, and the hardness is 345 HV.

  • The shape of the net mouth in a midwater trawl gear is examined by measuring towing speed, gear resistance, the width of otter boards, net height, and so on of a full-scale gear in operation. In addition, a mathematical model is developed to predict shapes of the net mouth. In the model, shapes of head, ground, side ropes, which governs the shape of net mouth, are assumed as a catenary. The validity of the model is tested with observations. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The warp tension and vertical opening of the gear is highly dependent to the towing speed. The depth of the gear and width of otter boards are very sensitive to the variations of the warp length. 2. The model results indicate that the wing tip of the head and side ropes is reduced and the vertical distances of the head and side ropes sagged to the back with increasing towing speed. 3. The results of comparing the measured net height with calculated side rope height were satisfying. 4. The results of analysis showed the vertical axis of the net mouth was decreased and the width of the net mouth was little changed when the towing speed increased.

  • The composite planetary gear reducer, a power transmission component of armored vehicles, operates at a high torque and is used in severe environments such as mountain, gravel or unpaved roads. Therefore, they must be designed and manufactured to have high durability. To design such a planetary gear reducer, there are numerous specifications to validate, such as selecting the module and the number of teeth of each gear satisfied the requirements, and calculating gear specifications and durability strength. Because planetary gears constitute a combination of several gears, there are many restrictions and interferences in selecting the number of teeth and addendum modification coefficients, and designing the tooth shape. Developing an auto design program is necessary to design various planetary gears more conveniently and quickly. In this study, a planetary gear reducer design software, widely used in various machines and armored vehicles, was developed. This design software can automatically select the number of teeth and modules of the gears, calculate specifications and quickly evaluate its fatigue durability strength and scoring failure according to the planetary gear reducer design theory.

  • The non-contact permanent magnet gear has advantages of high efficiency and improved reliability. It has other advantages of no mechanical friction loss, very little noise and vibration, and no need for lubricant. With these advantages, the non-contact permanent magnet gear that solves the physical contact problem of the mechanical gear has drawn attention. Due to this unique non-contact characteristic, the non-contact permanent magnet gear which is capable of non-contact torque transmission has replaced mechanical gear. The mechanical gears which is in many fields of the modern industry, is used mostly for power transmitting mechanical devices. However, it also has the problem of a low torque density, which requires improvement. In this paper, a novel pole piece shape is proposed in order to improve the problem of low torque density of the non-contact permanent magnet gear. The experiment data required for predicting the relationships among them are obtained using finiteelement Operating method based on two-dimensional (2-D) numerical analysis. Therefore, this paper derived an optimal model for thenon-contact permanent magnet gear with the novel pole piece using the Box-Behnken design, and the validity of the optimal design of the proposed pole piece shape through variance analysis and regression analysis demonstrated. In this paper, we performed the thransfer torque analysis in order to improve the torque density and power density, we have performed on optimal design of proposed pole piece shape using box-behnken.

  • Gear tooth micro-geometry modifications include the intentional removal of material from the gear teeth flanks, so that the shape is no longer a perfect involute. If the gear shapes are perfect, then the gear tooth meshing is better, therefore the gears will transmit input torque in a more efficient manner without the generation of high frequency engine fluctuation noise. In this paper, we study tooth micro-geometry optimization of rear gear set in 2 speed planetary gear reducers. Analysis revealed problems which are need of modification. Based on the results, tooth micro-geometry was used to deal with load distributions on the rear gear set.

  • Conventional automatic transmission system includes a hydrodynamic torque converter to transfer engine torque from an engine crank shaft to a rotatable input members, which are of complex design permitting them to serve several functions. These are clutches or brakes which couple the rotatable input member to member of a planetary gear set. The annulus gear for an automatic transmission is a monolithic gear having a set of gear teeth formed on an inner surface which is coupling with a set of planetary gear. In this study, the flow forming method is applied to the manufacturing of the annulus gear. This cold forming is proper method in order to manufacture dimensionally precise and round hollow components such as annulus gear. By pre-calculated amount of wall thickness reduction, the seamless tube of SAE1026 is compressed above its yield strength, plastically deformed and made to flow in several roll passes. According to this study, the desired geometry of the annulus gear can be achieved when the outer diameter and the thickness of the tube are properly decreased by compressed roll passes and the available material volume is easily forced to flow longitudinally over the shape of mandrel.

  • This study shows the optimum attachment of Two-Way Shape Memory Alloy (TWSMA) springs onto thermal liner and its sewing method for the mass production of fire fighter's intelligent turnout gear. SMA springs were attached to the fabric by four different methods and stitched by two different shapes (square and wave). The durability of the attached springs was tested by laundering up to 50 cycles. Examined were whether the springs would remain attached to the fabric after repeated laundering, the shape memory effect and reaction of the springs, and the anti-corrosiveness of the springs. A Human-Clothing-Environment simulator evaluated thermal insulation according to attachment methods, air layer volume, and stitch types. The findings showed that silicon attached springs remained intact after repeated laundering; in addition, repeated laundering did not influence the responsiveness and anti-corrosiveness of SMAs. Air volume had positive relations with the insulation. Attachment methods or stitch methods had limited impact on the thermal insulation. As a result, a wave type stitch with silicone attachment was suggested as the optimum method to attach the SMA springs onto the intelligent turnout gear for fire fighters.
