  • In laser imaging, accurate extraction of the laser's center is essential. Several methods exist to extract the laser's center in an image, such as the geometric mean, the parabolic curve fitting, and the Gaussian curve fitting, etc. The Gaussian curve fitting is the most suitable because it is based on the physical properties of the laser. The width of the Gaussian laser beam depends on the distance from the laser source to the target object. It is assumed in general that the distance remains constant at a laser spot resulting in a symmetric Gaussian model for the laser image. However, on a curved surface of the object, the distance is not constant; The laser beam is narrower on the side closer to the focal point of the laser light and wider on the side closer to the laser source, which causes the distribution of the laser beam to skew. This study presents a modified Gaussian model in the laser imaging to incorporate the slant angle of a curved object. The proposed method is verified with simulation and experiments.

  • FBG sensors are mainly used to measure strain and temperature of structures. In this paper, an interrogator of FBG sensors is developed and implemented to measure the crack of structures using FPGA and DSP. Developed interrogator consists of an optical source, an optical circulator, an optical grating and a CCD sensor and controller. The spectrum of the reflected light from the FBG sensor is analyzed and peak wavelength is detected. Next, strain of structure can be measured using shift of peak wavelength. Centroid algorithm and Gaussian fitting which are mainly applied to detect peak wavelength of the interrogator are compared in this paper. As a result of experiment, Gaussian fitting is suitable for a developed interrogator.

  • We developed a noise reduction algorithm for the measurement accuracy improvement of a fiber-optic distributed temperaure sensor system. The denoising technique is based on the wavelet transform. The proposed algorithm was applied to a FBG sensor output with the Gaussian line-fitting algorithm to minimize the output noise which originated from the intensity noise of the laser light source and the instability of signal porcessing. We confirmed the feasibility of the denoising algorithm by comparing the measurement results with those obtained with the Gaussian line-fitting algorithm only.

  • In this paper, we have compared three level set-based active contour (LSAC) methods on inhomogeneous MR image segmentation which is known as an important role of brain diseases to diagnosis and treatment in early. MR image is often occurred a problem with similar intensities and weak boundaries which have been causing many segmentation methods. However, LSAC method could be able to segment the targets such as the level set based on the local image fitting energy, the local binary fitting energy, and local Gaussian distribution fitting energy. Our implemented and tested the subcortical image segmentations were the corpus callosum and hippocampus and finally demonstrated their effectiveness. Consequently, the level set based on local Gaussian distribution fitting energy has obtained the best model to accurate and robust for the subcortical image segmentation.

  • A new Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) wavelength demodulation scheme is studied in the paper, which consists of an improved de-noising method and Gaussian fitting peak searching algorithm. The improved translational invariant wavelet without threshold adjust factor is proposed to get a better de-noising performance for FBG sensor signal and overcome the drawbacks of soft or hard threshold wavelets. In order to get a high wavelength demodulation precision of FBG sensor signal, this de-noising method is designed to combine with Gaussian fitting peak searching algorithm. The simulation results show that the wavelength maximum measurement error is lower than 1pm, and can get a much higher accuracy.

  • The joint probability distribution of uncertain geomechanical parameters of geotechnical strata is a crucial aspect in constructing the reliability functional function for roof structures. However, due to the limited number of on-site exploration and test data samples, it is challenging to conduct a scientifically reliable analysis of roof geotechnical strata. This study proposes a Copula method based on small sample exploration and test data to construct the intensity characteristics of roof geotechnical strata. Firstly, the theory of multidimensional copula is systematically introduced, especially the construction of four-dimensional Gaussian copula. Secondly, data from measurements of 176 groups of geomechanical parameters of roof geotechnical strata in 31 coal mines in China are collected. The goodness of fit and simulation error of the four-dimensional Gaussian Copula constructed using the Pearson method, Kendall method, and Spearman methods are analyzed. Finally, the fitting effects of positive and negative correlation coefficients under different copula functions are discussed respectively. The results demonstrate that the established multidimensional Gaussian Copula joint distribution model can scientifically represent the uncertainty of geomechanical parameters in roof geotechnical strata. It provides an important theoretical basis for the study of reliability functional functions for roof structures. Different construction methods for multidimensional Gaussian Copula yield varying simulation effects. The Kendall method exhibits the best fit in constructing correlations of geotechnical parameters. For the bivariate Copula fitting ability of uncertain parameters in roof geotechnical strata, when the correlation is strong, Gaussian Copula demonstrates the best fit, and other Copula functions also show remarkable fitting ability in the region of fixed correlation parameters. The research results can offer valuable reference for the stability analysis of roof geotechnical engineering.

  • We developed a fiber-optic Bragg grating sensor system using a SOA fiber laser for over heat detection in power systems. To compensate the nonlinear wavelength tuning of the fiber laser, we used fixed passband wavelengths from Fabry-Perot ITU filter as reference wavelengths. Gaussian line-fitting algorithm was also used to reduce the FBG peak detection error. Compared with a highest-peak-detection and a polynomial-fitting method, the proposed Gaussian fitting algorithm could drastically reduce the measurement errors. Also the SOA fiber laser made it possible to enhance the signal-to-noise-ratio even with several kilometers of lead fiber.

  • Unlike the traditional displacement type vessels, the high speed planing crafts are supported by the lift forces which are highly non-linear. This non-linear phenomenon causes their motions in an irregular seaway to be non-Gaussian. In general, it may not be possible to express the probability distribution of such processes by an analytical formula. Also the process might not be stationary or ergodic in which case the statistical behavior of the motion to be constantly changing with time. Therefore the extreme values of such a process can no longer be calculated using the analytical formulae applicable to Gaussian processes. Since closed form analytical solutions do not exist, recourse is taken to fitting a distribution to the data and estimating the statistical properties of the process from this fitted probability distribution. The peaks over threshold analysis and fitting of the Generalized Pareto Distribution are explored in this paper as an alternative to Weibull, Generalized Gamma and Rayleigh distributions in predicting the short term extreme value of a random process.

  • We propose the use of the Gaussian-curve fitting algorithm for the improvement of measurement accuracy in wavelengthscanned Fabry-Perot filter based demodulation systems. The peak locations of FBG sensors were calculated from the fitted curves rather than from distorted PD profiles, resulting in much better measurement accuracy than that of the highest-peak search algorithm. Also, the algorithm was proved to minimize measurement uncertainty of spectrally-distorted grating sensors. From our experimental results, a temperature resolution as small as ${\sim}0.3^{\circ}C$ was readily achieved by use of the Gaussian-curve fitting algorithm whereas the highest-peak search algorithm gave a temperature resolution larger than ${\sim}4^{\circ}C$.

  • This report introduces Gaussian electrostatic models (GEMs) to account for charge penetration effects in water-water interactions, allowing electrostatic interactions to be accurately described. Three different Gaussian electrostatic models, GEM-3S, GEM-5S, and GEM-6S are designed with s-type Gaussian functions. The coefficients and exponents of the Gaussian functions are optimized using the electrostatic potential (ESP) fitting procedure based on that of the MP2/aug-cc-pVTZ method. The electrostatic energies of ten different water dimers that were calculated with GEM-6S agree well with the results of symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT), indicating that this designed model can be effectively applied to future water models.
