  • Indoor positioning is recently highlighted and various kinds of indoor positioning systems are under developments. Since positioning systems have their own characteristics, proper positioning scheme should be chosen according to the required specifications. Positioning methods are often classified into time-based and angle-based one, and this paper presents the error analysis of these location methods. Because measurement equations of these methods are nonlinear, linearization is usually needed to get the position estimate. In this paper, Gauss-Newton method is used in the linearization. To analyze the position error, we investigate the error ellipse parameters that include eccentricity, rotation angle, and the size of ellipse. Simulation results show that the major axes of error ellipses of TOA and AOA method lie in different quadrants at most region of workspace, especially where the geometry is poor. When the TOA/AOA hybrid scheme is employed, it is found that the error ellipse is reduced to the intersection of ellipses of TOA and AOA method.

  • In this paper, we propose a selective extended Kalman filter based accurate pose estimation of the rigid body using a sensor fusion method. The pose of a rigid body can be estimated roughly by the Gauss-Newton method using the acceleration data and geomagnetic data, which can be refined with vision information and the gyro sensor information. However strong external interference noise makes the rough pose estimation difficult. In this paper, according to the measurement level of the external interference noise, the extended Kalman filter selectively uses mostly vision and gyro sensor information to increase the estimation credibility under strong interference noise environment.

  • Load Flow calculation methods can usually be divided into Gauss-Seidel method, Newton-Raphson method and decoupled method. Load flow calculation is a basic on-line or off-line process for power system planning, operation, control and state analysis. These days Newton-Raphson method is mainly used since it shows remarkable convergence characteristics. It, however, needs considerable calculation time in construction and calculation of inverse Jacobian matrix. In addition to that, Newton-Raphson method tends to fail to converge when system loading is heavy and system has a large R/X ratio. In this paper, matrix equation is used to make algebraic expression and then to solve load flow equation and to modify above defects. And it preserve certain part of Jacobian matrix to shorten the time of calculation. Application of mentioned algorithm to 14 bus, 39 bus, 118 bus systems led to identical result and the number of iteration got by Newton-Raphson method. The effect of time reduction showed about 28%, 30%, at each case of 39 bus, 118 bus system.

  • This paper proposes an image stabilization algorithm for close watching UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) using motion separation and stabilization mode. The motion of UAV is composed of its actual navigating motion and unwanted vibrating motion so that image sequences obtained from UAV are shaken randomly. In order to stabilize these images we separate the vibrating motion component from UAV motion and remove the effect caused by it from image sequences. In the proposed algorithm the motion and global intensity change of two consecutive images are modeled with 6 motion parameters and 2 intensity change parameters respectively. These modeled parameters are estimated by non-linear least square method based on Gauss-Newton algorithm. The vibrating motion component is separated from the estimated motion using IIR filtering and the geometric deformation caused by it is removed from image sequences. In order to apply the proposed method to real aerial image sequences with many abrupt changes of camera view, we proposed a stabilizing method using two different modes named as stabilizing and non-stabilizing mode. Experimental results show that the accuracy of motion estimation is 99% and the efficiency of removing the vibrating motion component is 90%. We apply the proposed method to real aerial image sequences and verified its stabilizing performance.

  • The installation of grounding systems is important for the safe operation of power systems, and the soil resistivity is an important design consideration for such systems. It varies markedly with the soil type, moisture content and temperature. The Jeju geological structure is formed in a multi-layered structure characteristic of volcanic areas and, and the geological ground resistance values can appear even constructed the same areas ground system different from the soil structure. In this study, a mock-up system using representative soil from Jeju was constructed to analyze the variation of the grounding resistance. The mock-up system was configured using the Gauss-Newton algorithm inversion method to analyze the model numerically using the Wenner method through the soil resistivity measurements used to create the ground model. Also, we analyzed the change in the general ground resistance characteristics of the copper rod, copper pipe, and carbon rod that are used for grounding. The variation of the grounding resistance with the hydration status was found to be $2.9[{\Omega}]$, $16.5[{\Omega}]$ and $20.1[{\Omega}]$ for the copper rod, copper pipes, and carbon rod, respectively, and the influence of the ground moisture resistance of the carbon rod was found to be the lowest with a value of $141[{\Omega}]$.

  • We address the problem of parameter estimation in multivariate distributions under ignorable non-monotone missing data. The factoring likelihood method for monotone missing data, termed by Robin (1974), is extended to a more general case of non-monotone missing data. The proposed method is algebraically equivalent to the Newton-Raphson method for the observed likelihood, but avoids the burden of computing the first and the second partial derivatives of the observed likelihood Instead, the maximum likelihood estimates and their information matrices for each partition of the data set are computed separately and combined naturally using the generalized least squares method. A numerical example is also presented to illustrate the method.

  • The load flow calculation is one of the most critical issues in electrical power systems. Generally, load flow has been calculated by Gauss-Seidel method and Newton-Raphson method but these methods have some problems such as non-convergence due to heavy load and initial value. In this paper, to overcome such problems, the power flow is calculated by genetic algorithm. At the heavy load, the solution for problem can not be obtained by the Newton-Raphson method. However, it can be solved in case of using genetic algorithm. In this paper, the strong point of this method would be demonstrated in application to an example system.

  • A finite element method is programmed to analyse the nonlinear behavior of axisymmetric structures. The lst order Mindlin shell theory which takes into account the transversal shear deformation is used to formulate a conical two node element with six degrees of freedom. To evade the shear locking phenomenon which arises in Mindlin type element when the effect of shear deformation tends to zero, the reduced integration of one point Gauss Quadrature at the center of element is employed. This method is the Updated Lagrangian formulation which refers the variables to the state of the most recent iteration. The solution is searched by Newton-Raphson iteration method. The tangent matrix of this method is obtained by a finite difference method by perturbating the degrees of freedom with small values. For the moment this program is limited to the analyses of non-linear elastic problems. For structures which could have elastic stability problem, the calculation is controled by displacement.

  • The thermal behavior of wood exposed to the outdoors is influenced by solar absorptivity and longwave emissivity. However, it is difficult to measure that properties directly. Hence we estimate the values of the parameter by using the least-square optimization technique. Finally we report the results for the computation of the values of the parameters.

  • We investigate the estimation of the moisture transfer coefficients in porous media by optimization technique which minimizes the functional defined by the squares error of the numerical solution of an inverse diffusion problem from their experimental values of the moisture content at the some time-steps. In this paper, we solve a diffusion equation numerically by the control volume finite element methods.
