Lake Paldang is a main resource of drinking water for 20 million people in the greater Seoul area. Dry deposition amounts of nitrogen and sulfur were estimated for three typical days in each season over the watershed of Lake Paldang. Models- 3/CMAQ (Community Multiscale Air Quality) and MM5 (Mesoscale Model) were used to predict air quality and meteorology, respectively. Aerosols as well as gaseous pollutants were considered. Nitrogen was mainly deposited in the form of HNO, while most of sulfur was deposited in the form of SO$_2$. Contribution of secondary pollutants was the largest in fall since they were transported from the greater Seoul area. However, contribution of secondarily-formed particulate pollutants to the nitrogen deposition was the largest in winter because semi-volatile ammonium nitrate favors lower temperature. Annual deposition amounts of nitrogen and sulfur were 37% and 26% of their emission amounts, respectively, over the watershed of Lake Paldang. Higher value of the nitrogen deposition showed a more influence of pollutants emitted in the greater Seoul area.

To understand the human exposure levels of volatile halogenated hydrocar-bons in ambient air, a new rapid and convenient analytical method for determination of the compounds in gaseous phase was evaluated and established. The method is based upon passsive diffusion to personal sampler containing adsorbent and solvent extraction followed by purge trap/ on-column cryof-ocusing method. A new method needs no special instrumentation for gas collection because it is based upon the passive diffusion principle. The typical chromatogram obtained in this study proved that rapid and simultaneous determination of target analytes was possible with good resolution. The developed method was successfully applied to determine the volatile halogenated hydrocarbons in indoor air and the values obtained by this new method were compared with those by direct suction method. The concentration of carbon tetrachloride, 1,1,2-trichloroethylene, chloroform showed the values below 400$\mug/m^3$ except the maximum of 1,513$\mug/m^3$ of chloroform. 1,1,1-Trichloroethane showed approximately 1,000 to 5,000$\mug/m^3$ range of diurnal fluctuation in indoor air.
The decomposition behaviors of gaseous cyanides in non-thermal plasma-catalyst hybrid reactor have been investigated with the variation of discharge power, influent concentration of cyanide, humidity of air carrier and packed materials in the reactor. Destruction of cyanides by plasma only process was very difficult compared to that of trichloroethylene. But the destruction efficiencies of cyanides were dramatically improved through packing alumina or Pt/alumina bead in the plasma discharge region. From the results, it could be assumed that thermal catalytic effect is involved simultaneously with plasma in the reaction of cyanides destruction on the alumina or Pt/alumina packed plasma reactor.
Synthesis of perfluoromethanesulfonyl fluoride(PFMSF) which is a valuable precursor of perfluoro-chemicals such as surface modifier and fine chemicals was studied by electrochemical fluorination (ECF). In order to determine the termination of preelectrolysis, it was carried to monitor the variation of current during preelectrolysis by means of constant cell voltage operation. In a batch cell, chronopotentiometric electrolysis and various chemical analysis such as GC, GC/MS and If were used to understand the potential change of electrode and synthesis and control of hazardous gases products. Termination of preelectrolysis was determinated by measurement the current and/or detection of $F_2$ gas generation. And during the preelectrolysis, an amount of generated $OF_2$ was shown that a lot of moisture was absorbed from air when a cell was filled with anhydrous hydrogen fluoride( AHF ). Above 4V cell voltage, $F_2$ gas was generated and acted on any form of fluorinating agents. In the ECF of MSC (methane sulfonyl chloride) by constant current operation, the potential of anode was intimately relation with generation of $SO_2F_2$. Exchange of Cl to F was dominatly occured in a initial stage. There were various gaseous products including PFMSF as main product and $C_4$ compounds.
Nano-sized $TiO_2$ particles were produced by a premixed flame aerosol reactor, and they were immobilized on a mesh-type substrate in form of particulate film. The reactor made it possible maintaining the original particulate characteristics determined in the flame synthetic process. The particulate morphology and crystalline phase were not changed until the particulate were finally coated on the substrate, which resulted in the better performance of the photocatalytic conversion of the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the ultraviolet $(UV)-TiO_2$ system. In the flame aerosol reactor, the various specific surface areas and the anatase weight fractions of the synthesized particles were obtained by manipulating the parameters in the combustion process. The performance of the $TiO_2$ particulate films was evaluated for the destruction of the VOCs under the various UV irradiation conditions. The decomposition rates of benzene and formaldehyde under the irradiation of UV-C of 254 nm in wavelength were evaluated to check the performance of $TiO_2$ film layer to be applied in air quality control system.

This study is devoted to the ability of carbon fiber material samples impregnated with various amounts of barium iodide and triethylenediamine to remove radioactive methyliodide from air streams. The main sorption characteristics of impregnated UVIS® carbon fiber were determined and the use of this material for purifying of technological gas flows at nuclear power plants was evaluated. The methyliodide trapping efficiency by samples impregnated with barium iodide, TEDA, and their mixture was 83.4 ± 0.8%; 93.1 ± 0.6% and 93.5 ± 0.7% respectively, under the same conditions. The study established a significantly higher capacity (8.3 ± 0.07 mg/cm2) of samples impregnated simultaneously with both chemical compounds toward methyliodide. Under the same test conditions, the values of this parameter for the samples impregnated separately with TEDA and BaI2 were 2.85 ± 0.05 mg/cm2 and 0.86 ± 0.04 mg/cm2, respectively.

Pine needle samples(1 year, 2 year, 3 year old) were collected in Seoul and Ansung to investigate the deposition characteristics of atmospheric PCBs depending on exposure periods. Total PCBs concentration of pine needle samples in Seoul and Ansung showed 2,429, 1,198 pg/g DW(dry weight), respectively. PCB homologs concentration of pine needle samples decreased with increasing chlorine-substituted compounds. It showed that higher chlorine- substituted compounds in existing particle phase compared to lower chlorine-substituted compounds existing in gaseous phase were difficult to accumulate lipids of the pine needles samples. The results of regression analysis between exposure periods in the atmosphere and concentration of total PCBs measured in pine needles at two sites showed significant levels($R^2>0.94$, p<0.01), which implies that atmospheric PCBs accumulated on pine needles with positive linearity depending on exposure periods in this study. Therefore pine needle samples can be used as passive air sampler(PAS) for monitoring air contamination for a long time in different sites.
Formaldehyde responsive protein(FRP) 1 belongs to the family of universal stress protein(USP) and is known to respond to stress caused by fumigation of gaseous volatile organic compounds(VOCs) such as formaldehyde and toluene. However, the molecular function of this protein is not well understood at cellular and molecular level. In this study, loss of function mutant of FRP1 generated by T-DNA insertion(frp1-4) has been isolated from Arabidopsis thaliana and the function of FRP1 was characterized. The loss-of-function mutant of FRP1 appeared slight growth defects with shorter stem and rosette leaves compared to wild type. In addition, the damage caused by exogenous VOCs was more severe in frp1-4 than in control. Therefore, Arabidopsis FRP1 seems to be the protein involved not only in the growth and development of plant but also the stress resistance against toxic volatile organic compounds.

As an alternative for the traditional materials packed in biofilters treating gaseous VOCs, a novel packing material has been developed and tested. In the packing material(named as Hydrogel Bead, HB), pollutant-degrading microorganisms were immobilized in hydrogel consisted of alginate, polyvinyl alcohol(PVA), and powdered activated carbon. A closed-bottle study showed that the HB rapidly removed gaseous styrene without the losses of adsorption and biodegradation capacity. Biofilter column experiments using the HBs also demonstrated that greater than 95% of removal efficiencies were found at an inlet styrene loading rate of $245g/m^3/hr$, which was higher biofilter performance than other elimination capacity reported earlier. Furthermore, when the inlet styrene concentration increased stepwise, the adsorption played an important role in overall styrene removals. The absorbed styrene was found to be biodegraded in the following low inlet loading condition. Consequently, the new HB material is able to successfully minimize the drawbacks of activated carbon(necessity of regeneration) and biological processes(low removal capacity at dynamic loading conditions), and maximize the overall performance of biofilter systems treating VOCs.

Although concentrations of hazardous air pollutants(HAPs) are very low in the atmosphere, a growing attention has been paid on such compounds due to their high toxicity and bioaccumulation potentials into human body. In order to control and manage the amount of these materials in ambient air, it is necessary to construct monitoring system of them and to know the current concentration level of HAPs above all. In this work, a wide range of HAPs has been measured in metropolitan area to recognize the present state of HAPs in this area. The measured concentration of VOCs was higher in order of Jeonnongdong, Jeongdong, and Yangsuri. The regional difference of VOCs concentration was also highest in spring. Its total VOCs was ranged from $15.17{\sim}41.45$ ppb. Benzene $0.43{\sim}2.32$ ppb showed similar concentration level with the result of previous researches in Seoul. This value is a little higher than the average concentration 0.92 ppb for national ambient air quality standards in Japan. The concentration of aldehydes in this study was lower than those of other researches. Previous works in Seoul metropolitan area showed that the concentration of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were higher than 5 ppb. The concentration of gaseous and particulate PAHs was high in order of winter, spring, and summer More than 90% of PAHs with low molecular weight such as 2-rings and 3-rings PAHs existed in gas phase. On the other hands, PAHs with high molecular weight more than 5-rings PAHs almost existed in particulate. In spring, the concentration of gaseous PAHs was 24.38 $ng/m^3$ in Jeongdong. Among the particulate PAHs, the concentrations of Naphthalene, Benzo(b)fluoranthene, and Benzo(g, h, i)perylene were higher than others. Especially, the concentration of Benzo(a)pyrene, a important carcinogenic pollutant, was highest in winter 0.5 $ng/m^3$ and ranged from 0.03 to 0.3 $ng/m^3$ in spring and summer, which is lower than the monitoring result in 90's. These components were mainly originated from the vehicle exhaust or heating equipment use.
