  • We perform disk-halo decomposition of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using a novel HI velocity field extraction method, aimed at better deriving its HI kinematics and thus the dark matter density profile. For this, we use two newly developed galaxy kinematic analysis tools, BAYGAUD and 2DBAT which have been used for the kinematic analysis of resolved galaxies from Australian Square Kilometre Array (ASKAP) observations like WALLABY which is an all-sky HI galaxy survey in southern sky. By applying BAYGAUD to the combined HI data cube of the LMC taken with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and Parkes radio telescopes, we decompose all the line-of-sight velocity profiles into an optimal number of Gaussian components based on Bayesian MCMC techniques. From this, we disentangle turbulent non-circular gas motions from the overall rotation of the galaxy. We then derive the rotation curve of the LMC by applying 2DBAT to the separated circular motions. The rotation curve reflecting the total kinematics of the LMC, dark and baryonic matters is then be combined with the mass models of baryons, mainly stellar and gaseous components in order to examine the dark matter distribution. Here, we present the analysis of the extracted HI gas maps, rotation curve, and J, H and K-band surface photometry of the LMC.

  • This study examined how varying tempering temperatures affect the susceptibility of Cr-Mo low alloy steels to hydrogen embrittlement. A slow strain-rate test (SSRT) was carried out on the steels electrochemically pre-charged with hydrogen in order to examine the hydrogen embrittlement behavior. The results showed that the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of the Cr-Mo low alloy steels improved with increasing tempering temperature. Thermal desorption analysis (TDA) revealed that diffusible hydrogen content decreased with increasing tempering temperature, accompanied by a slight increase in the peak temperature. This decrease in hydrogen content was likely due to a reduction in dislocation density which served as reversible hydrogen trap sites. These findings underline the significant role of tempering temperature in enhancing the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of Cr-Mo low alloy steels.

  • The composition of dissolved gases and nutrients in a liquid medium were determined for establishment of the optimum conditions for in vitro culture of Helicobacter pylori. A microaerobic condition facored by the organism was prepared by adjusting the partial pressure of the gas, agitation speed, and viscosity of the medium. The gaseous concentrations were controlled by utilizing CampyPak Plus that reduced oxygen while augmenting carbon dioxide. Agitation of the broth facilitated the oxygen transfer to the cells, yet inhibited the growth at high rates. An increase of viscosity in the medium repressed the culture although this variable was relatively insignificant. The chemical constituents of the liquid broth were examined to establish an economic model for H. pylori cultivation. The microbe required a neutral pH for optimum growth, and yet was also able to proliferate in an acidic condition, presumably by releasing the acidity-modulating enzyme, urease. Cyclodextrin and casamino acid were investigated as growth enhancers in place of serum, while yeast extract unexpectedly inhibited the cells. A low concentration of glucose, the unique carbon source for the organism, increased the cell density, yet high concentrations resulted in an adverse effect. Under optimally dissolved gas conditions, the cell concentration in brucella broth supplemented with serum substitutes and glucose reached $1.6{\times}10^8$ viable cells/ml which was approximately 50% higher than that obtained in the liquid medium added with only cyclodextrin or serum.

  • Gaseous sulfur compound such as $H_2S$ or COS in coal- or biomass-derived hot syngas can be purified by solid sorbents at high temperatures. In this study, we investigated the physical properties and reactivity of solid regenerable desulfurization sorbents with 37.2, 41.9, and 46.5wt% ZnO to look into the ZnO content effect. The sorbents were produced by spray-drying method to apply to a fluidized-bed process. Sulfidation and regeneration reaction were carried out using a thermogravimetric analyzer. Sorbent prepared with 46.5wt% ZnO had physical properties suitable for a fluidized-bed process applications such as spherical shape, sufficient mechanical strength and density, high porosity and surface area. It showed high sulfur sorption capacity of 10.4wt% (ZnO utilization of 57%) at reaction temperatures of 500 and $650^{\circ}C$ for sulfidation and regeneration, respectively. However, the sulfur sorption capacity and ZnO utilization were significantly reduced and dimple shape appeared when the ZnO content decreased to 37.2 and 41.9wt%. Sulfur sorption capacity and regenerability were improved as reaction temperature increased within the experimental temperatures used in this work. The reaction temperature zones of $1500{\sim}550^{\circ}C$ and $650{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ are recommended for sulfidation and regeneration, respectively, to lead best reaction performances of the ZnO-based spray-dried sorbents developed in this work.

  • In this work, the effect of torrefaction on the basic characteristic of sewage sludge was studied to evaluate the energy potential as a solid fuel. Torrefaction experiments were performed at temperatures of $150{\sim}600^{\circ}C$. The torrefied sewage sludge was characterized by the energy yield, ash content, volatile fraction and high heating value (HHV). The gaseous products from torrefaction of the sewage sludge were also analyzed. Thermogravimetric analysis was carried out for the kinetic analysis of sewage sludge torrefaction. From this work, it was found that the ash content increased with an increase of the torrefaction temperature while the energy yield, HHV and volatile fraction decreased. It was also found that the emission of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon gases started at $300^{\circ}C$ by the thermal degradation of volatile components in the sewage sludge.

  • This study is to investigate experimentally the flame structure and propagation mechanism in dust explosions and to provide the fundamental knowledge. Upward propagating laminar dust flames in a vertical duct of 1.8 m height and 0.15 m square cross-section are observed and flame front is visualized using by a high-speed video camera. Also, the thicknesses of preheated and reaction zone have been determined by a schlieren, electrostatic probe and thermocouple. The thickness of preheated zone in lycopodium dust flame is observed to be 4~13 mm, about several orders of magnitude higher than that of premixed gaseous flames. From the experimental results by a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) system, a certain residence time of the unburned particle in preheated zone is needed to generate combustible gas from the particle. The residence time will depend on preheated zone thickness, particle velocity and flame propagation velocity.

  • [ $Li_3AlH_6$ ] (5.6wt% theoretical hydrogen storage capacity) powders with and without Ti-containing dopants have been successfully synthesized by mechanochemical reaction near room temperatures from mixtures of LiH and $LiAlH_4$ powders. It has been observed that single phase $Li_3AlH_6$ could be obtained within 2-3 hours of milling, but the addition of reactive $TiCl_2\;or\;TiCl_3$ to the starting mixtures. caused partial decomposition of $LiAlH_4$ into LiCl and free Al with gaseous $H_2$. By addition of these reactive dopants to the as-synthesized $Li_3AlH_6$, this problem could be solved. The addition of 2 mol% $TiCl_2\;or\;TiCl_3\;to\;Li_3AlH_6$ decreased the decomposition start temperature up to 30-50$^{\circ}C$, while that of Ti or $TiH_2$ did not change the thermal decomposition behavior of $Li_3AIH_6$.

  • To return LNG to a gaseous state, it is fed into a regasification plant. For inland area, where pipelines do not exist or difficult to construct, the LNG is delivered to the inland-receiving terminal available at that area, regasified and delivered to consumers. At inland-receiving terminal, air-heating vaporizer type is usually used. To contribute in developing an efficient air-heating vaporizer, experiment on finned type air-heating vaporizer using 8 fins, 50 mm fin length (8fin50le) and 4 fins, 75 mm fin length (4fin75le) were conducted. The experiments were conducted by varying the ambient condition and the length of the vaporizer. The ambient air was controlled so that it has the same condition with air condition in every season available. $LN_2$ is used to substitute LNG because of safety reason. The results show that characteristics of the finned type 4fin75le vaporizer are comparable to finned type 8fin50le vaporizer at all season.

  • Aerodynamic forces and moments have been used to control rocket propelled vehicles. If control is required at very low speed, Those systems only provide a limited capability because aerodynamic control force is proportional to the air density and low dynamic pressure. But thrust vector control(TVC) can overcome the disadvantages. TVC is the method which generates the side force and roll moment by controlling exhausted gas directly in a rocket nozzle. TVC is classified by mechanical and fluid dynamic methods. Mechanical methods can change the flow direction by several objects installed in a rocket nozzle exhaust such as tapered ramp tabs and jet vane. Fluid dynamic methods control the flight direction with the injection of secondary gaseous flows into the rocket nozzle. The tapered ramp tabs of mechanical methods are used in this paper. They installed at the rear in the rocket nozzle could be freely moved along axial and radial direction on the mounting ring to provide the mass flow rate which is injected from the rocket nozzle. In this paper, the conceptual design and the performance study on the tapered ramp tabs of the thurst vector control has been carried out using the supersonic cold flow system and shadow graph. Numerical simulation was also performed to study flow characteristics and interactions between ramp tabs. This paper provides to analyze the location of normal shock wave and distribution of surface pressure on the region enclosed by the tapered ramp tabs.

  • The adsorptions of gaseous $H_2O\;and\;D_2O\;on\;Na^+-,\;Ca^{2+}-,\;and\;Al^{3+}$ montmorillonites at various temperatures were undertaken. Break down of ir hydroxyl stretching bands into four Gaussian components was made by means of manual technique. Resonance theory of water to form silanol hydroxyl group was supported by $3625cm^{-1}$ band for OH and $2680cm^{-1}$ band for OD which depend on amounts of water adsorbed. The broad bands at about $3400 cm^{-1}\;and\;2475cm^{-1}$ were assigned to stretching band of silanol OH hydrogen bonded to adsorbed water. The prominent $3230 cm^{-1}$ band together with component around $2345 cm^{-1}$ were attributed to adsorbed $H_2O\;and\;D_2O$ respectively. The chemical nature of the hydrogen bonding between adsorbed water and neighboring surface OH was explained adequately in terms of electrostatic interaction.
