플라즈마를 결합한 바이오 트리클링 시스템에 의한 휘발성 유기물질의 제거 (Removal of Volatile Organic Compounds Using a Plasma Assisted Biotrickling System)

  • In this study, a newly developed biotrickling system, combined with a non-thermal plasma reactor, was investigated to effectively treat gaseous contaminants such as VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds). Three kinds of non-thermal plasmas (NTPs) such as a rod type dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma, a packed bead type DBD plasma and a gliding arc (GA) plasma, were tested and compared in terms of power consumption. The rod type DBD plasma was selected as one for integration with biotrickling system due to its relatively high VOC removal efficiency, low power consumption and low pressure drop. Toluene and xylene as representatives of VOCs were used as test gases. The experiment results showed that the efficiency of biotrickling system was especially very low at the high gas concentration and high flow rate and the removal efficiencies of VOCs were considerably enhanced in the biotrickling system, when the DBD plasma was worked in front of that even at the high gas concentration and high flow rate.

Experimental Study on the Enhancement of Particle Removal Efficiency in Spray Tower Scrubber Using Electrospray

  • There have been a lot of efforts to keep permissible emission standards and to reduce the amount of emitted air pollutants. There are several air pollution control equipments, however, wet scrubber is used to remove particulate matters and gaseous pollutants simultaneously, even if it has low collection efficiency in the particle size less than $5.0{\mu}m$. To overcome this problem, we introduced a spray tower scrubber with an electrospray system which a high voltage was indirectly applied. We found that collection efficiency of fine particles in the electrospray system was improved by increasing electrical field strength and the ratio of liquid-gas flow rate (from 41% to 84% for $0.3{\mu}m$ particles). In addition, a number of small droplets generated from an electrospray system led high collection efficiency, resulting from electrostatic attraction between droplets and particles and higher collision frequency. Therefore, we can conclude that the introduction of an electrospray system is quite effective to increase the particle removal efficiency of a spray tower scrubber.

저농도 이산화탄소 포집을 위한 초미세 탄소섬유 흡착제 제조 연구 (Preparation of Activated Carbon Fiber Adsorbent for Low Level CO2)

  • Adsorption is a plausible technology using solid adsorbents for dry capture of carbon dioxide ($CO_2$). In general, narrow size distribution of tiny pores and surface chemical functionalities of solid adsorbents enhance the adsorption capacity of gaseous $CO_2$ molecules. In order to utilize the advantages of fibrous adsorbents, this work prepared activated carbon nanofibers (ACNFs) via the electrospinning process using a polymer precursor of polyacylonitrile (PAN). The spun fibers were 390 nm to 580 nm in thickness with an average surface area of $27.3m^2/g$. The surface structure was improved by a programmed thermal activation at $800^{\circ}C$ in $CO_2$ atmosphere. It was also found that the nitrogen-groups including pyrrole and pyridine were created during the activation facilitaing the selective adsorption as forming enhanced active sites. The finally obtained adsorption capacities were 2.74 mmol/g for pure $CO_2$ flow and 0.74mmol/g for 3000 ppm.

세포증식과 증식속도의 On-line Monitoring을 위한 Computer- coupled Mass Spectrometer의 응용 (Application of Computer-coupled Mass Spectrometer for Continuous On-line Monitoring of Cell Growth and Growth Rate)

  • Quadrupole mass spectrometer를 이용한 발효 배기가스의 분석을 통해 세포의 증식을 on-line monitoring하고자 model 균주로 Candida utilis에 대해 연구하였다. Quadrupole mass spectrometer와 interface된 16-bit 개인용 컴퓨터 (IBM PC-AT)에서 산소 소비속도(OUR)와 이산화탄소 발생속도(CER)를 on-line 계산할 수 있었고 계속해서 이들 계산치로부터 세포농도와 증식속도 및 비증식속도를 계산하였다. 계산된 값들은 실험적으로 측정한 세포농도 및 비증식속도와 잘 일치함을 알 수 있었다.

  • Micro catalytic reactors are alternative propulsion device that can be used on a nano satellite. When used with a monopropellant, $H_2O_2$, a micro catalytic reactor needs only one supply system as the monopropellant reacts spontaneously on contact with catalyst and releases heat without external ignition, while separate supply lines for fuel and oxidizer are needed for a bipropellant rocket engine. Additionally, $H_2O_2$ is in liquid phase at room temperature, eliminating the burden of storage for gaseous fuel and carburetion of liquid fuel. In order to design a micro catalytic reactor, an appropriate catalyst material must be selected. Considering the safety concern in handling the monopropellants and reaction performance of catalyst, we selected hydrogen peroxide at volume concentration of 70% and perovskite redox catalyst of lantanium cobaltate doped with strondium. Perovskite catalysts are known to have superior reactivity in reduction-oxidation chemical processes. In particular, lantanium cobaltate has better performance in chemical reactions involving oxygen atom exchange than other perovskite materials. In the present study, a process to prepare perovskite type catalyst, $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}CoO_3$, and measurement of its propellant decomposition performance in a test reactor are described.

복사 버너의 연소특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Study on Combustion Characteristics of Radiant Burner)

  • Energy efficient and low pollution combustion systems the use gaseous fuels have been in great demand in recent year. Radiant burner in many different forms are emerging as very desirable combustion systems for same reason. Porous radiant burners are used in drying, preheating and curing, and in other type of materials processing and manufacturing processes. However, little knowledge is available about the operating characteristics and the structure of flames in porous ceramic fiber radiant burners. The objective of the present work is to investigate the global performance characteristics of the ceramic fiber burner. A detailed study which includes the spectral intensity, gas temperature, radiation efficiency and global pollutant emissions. Another objective is to study the flame structure of the ceramic fiber burner by measuring the local gas temperature. The results indicate that ceramic fiber burner do offer a 19-44% gain in radiant efficiency. The ceramic fiber burner exhibit significant spectral intensity peaks in the band at $2.0-2.5{\mu}m$. The local temperature distribution inside the mat and near the mat surface as a function of the equivalence ratio can be reasonably interpreted by the relation of the heat balance in the mat and movement of the reaction zone. Nox emission from ceramic fiber burner is less than 25ppm throughout the operating range.

  • Partitioning tracer tests were conducted to quantify the saturation degree of diesel and water in unsaturated soil, respectively. The use of partitioning tracers that partition into diesel, water, and air (i.e., three-phase partitioning), is in attractive alternative to traditional coring and analysis method. These gaseous partition tracers not global warming gas like CFC's are Butane, Acetylene, Ethylene, Methylene chloride, and Methane. The glass column packed with sandy soil was prepared, in which a three-phase system of air, water, and diesel was maintained. Conservative and partition gas tracers were injected into the columns and detected easily using a single GC detector(FID). For each tracer, a method of moments was used to estimate partition coefficient between water, diesel. and the air, respectively. The results from the column studies showed that the diesel/air tracer partition coefficient ranged from 8.2 to 868 and 9.2 for water/air. Saturation degree of diesel and water in the column, predicted by the partition coefficients obtained from tests, was underestimated up to 66% and 23% respectively.

  • Precipitated calcium carbonate(PCC), particularly calcite crystal, is extensively used as a pigment, filler or extender in various industries such as paper, paint, textile, detergents, adhesives, rubber and plastics, food, cosmetics, and biomaterials. PCC is conventionally produced through the gas-liquid carbonation process, which consists on bubbling gaseous $CO_2$ through a concentrated calcium hydroxide slurry. This study is aimed to find some factors for controlling the morphology of engineered PCC in lab-scaled mixing batch. The experimental designs were based on temperature variables, $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration, $CO_2$ flow rate, and electrical conductivity. The model of engineered PCC morphology was finally controlled by adjustment of electrical conductivity(6.0~7.0 mS/cm) and $Ca(OH)_2$ concentration(10 g/L). Orthorhombic calcite crystals were mostly created at high concentration and electrical conductivity conditions because the increased ratio of $Ca^{2+}$ and $CO{_3}^{2-}$ ions affects the growth rate of orthorhombic faces. Excess calcium spices were contributed to the growth of faces in calcium carbonate crystal, and the non-stoichiometric reaction was occurred between $Ca^{2+}$ and $CO{_3}^{2-}$ ions during carbonation process.

  • Emission of hazardous and volatile organic chemicals from solid waste landfill site was become to important issue because of environmental pollution and health risk by such chemicals. Laboratory batch and continuous experiments were conducted respectively to elucidate isothermal sorption behaviors and transport phenomena(by gas through unsaturated solid waste layer) in wet solid waste-gas system. Source separated and size reduced refuse(bulky waste) and incinerated ash were used after controlling water content, and trichloroethylene(TCE) was chosen among many such chemicals because of it's generality among those man-created pollutants. Isothermal TCE sorption equilibria wet solid waste-gas system can be described in linear equation and partition coefficient in this system can be estimated approximately by the simple equation derived from schematic structure of the system. Transport equation modified by instantaneous equilibrium sorption fraction and kinetic sorption rate(overall mass transfer capacity coefficient) simulated well the column experiment results.

불포화대중 휘발성 유기화합물 가스의 이동지연현상 (Retardation of Mobility of Gaseous VOCs in the Unsaturated Zone)

  • 본 연구는 지표면 부근의 함수율이 아주 작은 불포화대중 휘발성 유기화합물가스의 이동에서 토양흡착으로 인해 발생하는 지연현상을 수학적으로 정식화하였으며, 이의 적합성을 검토하기 위하여 모델토양으로 glass bead 또는 규사를 채운 칼럼실험을 수행하여 지연계수를 적용한 이론계산과 기존의 지연식을 적용하여 구한 계산결과와 비교하였다. 그 결과 불포화 다공대중에서의 TCE가스의 이동현상은 가스로 부터 토양으로의 흡착을 고려한 지연계수를 적용한 계산결과가 기존의 지연계수를 적용한 계산 결과보다 실험결과를 잘 재현함을 알 수 있었다.
