CuO catalyst-coated alumino-silicate fiber filters were prepared for the simultaneous removal of particulate matter and gaseous contaminants such as NOx and SOx. Hot gas cleaning experiments similar to Shell UOP process other than the catalyst supporting materials were carried out between 300 and $500^{\circ}C$ for the evaluation of the gas removal efficiency of the catalytic filter. Experimental results showed that removel efficiency for $SO_2$ was greater than 99% in the temperature range 450~$500^{\circ}C$ and more than 90% of NO was collected between 350 and $370^{\circ}C$. It was found that the higher the CuO content, the higher the removal efficiency for $SO_2$. Removal efficiency for NO was more affected by the gas cleaning temperature than by the CuO content in the catalyst-filter.
A biofiltration system using activated carbon/polyurethane composite as solid support inoculated with Bacillus sp. was developed for treating a gaseous stream containing high concentrations of H$_2$S. The effects of operating condition such as the influent H$_2$S concentration and the empty bed contact time (EBCT) on the removal efficiency of H$_2$S were investigated. The biofilter showed the stable removal efficiencies of over 99 % under the EBCT range from 15 to 60 sec at the 300 ppmv of H$_2$S inlet concentration. When the inlet concentration of H$_2$S was increased, the removal efficiencies decreased, reaching 95 and 74%, at EBCTs of 10 and 7.5 sec, respectively. The maximum elimination capacity in the biofilter packed with activated carbon/polyurethane composite media was 157 g/m$^3$/hr.
Thrust vector control is the method which generates the side force and roll moment by controlling exhausted gas directly in a rocket nozzle. TVC is classified by mechanical and fluid dynamic methods. Mechanical methods can change the flow direction by several objects installed in a rocket nozzle exhaust such as tapered ramp tabs and jet vane. Fluid dynamic methods control the flight direction with the injection of secondary gaseous flows into the rocket nozzle. The tapered ramp tabs of mechanical methods are used in this paper. They installed at the rear in the rocket nozzle could be freely moved along axial and radial direction on the mounting ring to provide the mass flow rate which is injected from the rocket nozzle. TVC of the tapered ramp tabs has the potential to produce both large axial thrust and high lateral force. We have conducted the experimental research and flow analysis of ramp tabs to show the performance and the structural integrity of the TVC. The experiments are carried out with the supersonic cold flow system and the schlieren graph. This paper provides to analyze the location of normal shock wave and distribution of surface pressure on the region enclosed by the tapered ramp tabs.
Natural mineral water is generally quite different from ordinary drinking water due to its original nature and various properties. The complexity of natural mineral water requires, therefore, not only to identify its nature and proper characteristics, but also to classify them by a reasonable scientific basis of comparison. The study was concentrated on a possible classification technique to natural mineral waters by their constitutions and physico-ehemical properties. The classification was carried out by the computation of such numerical parameters as ionic equivalent percentage, electrolytic conductance or mobility, ionic molecular weight, molecular concentration, equivalent conductivity and degree of ionization in consideration of the determinative criteria as follows -particular single element or molecule -major components of natural waters as bicarbonate, sulphate, chloride, caloride, calcium, magnesium, and sodium -moleculat concentration related to blood osmotic pressure -water temperature at emergence from spring -contents of free carbon dioxide (CO2) -pH value of water -total dissolved solids or salts (NaCl) The results obtained proved out to be clearly distinguhhable from ordinary drinking water as far as concern natural mineral water as an example on the subject -simple water -bicarbonate-predominating water -cold spring -carbonated-non gaseous water -weak alkaline water -non saline water Putting these various results together, the sample turned out to be a kind of natural mineral water that can be used as a drinking water if microbiologically safe.
We use two-dimensional high-resolution MHD simulations to investigate the effects of magnetic fields on the formation and evolution of such substructures as well as on the mass inflow rates to the galaxy center. We find that there exists an outermost x1-orbit relative to which gaseous responses to an imposed stellar bar potential are completely different between inside and outside. Inside this orbit, gas is shocked into dust lanes and infalls to form a nuclear ring. Magnetic fields are compressed in dust lanes, reducing their peak density. Magnetic stress removes further angular momentum of the gas at the shocks and leads to a smaller and more centrally distributed ring, resulting in the mass inflow rates larger, by more than two orders of magnitude, than in the unmagnetized counterparts. Outside the outermost x1-orbit, on the other hand, an MHD dynamo operates near the corotation and bar-end regions, efficiently amplifying magnetic fields. The amplified fields shape into trailing magnetic arms with strong fields and low density. The base of the magnetic arms have a thin layer in which magnetic fields with opposite polarity reconnect via a tearing-mode instability. This produces numerous magnetic islands with large density which propagate along the arms to turn the outer disk into a highly chaotic state.
Nuclear rings in barred galaxies are sites of active star formation (SF). We investigate SF and its feedback effects occurring in barred galaxies, for the first time, using high-resolution grid-based hydrodynamic simulations. The gaseous medium is assumed to be infinitesimally thin, isothermal, and unmagnetized. The SF recipes include a density threshold corresponding to the Jeans condition, a SF efficiency of 1%, and momentum feedback via Type II supernova events together with stellar-wind mass loss. To investigate various environments, we vary the gas sound speed as well as the efficiency of momentum injection in the in-plane direction. We find that when the sound speed is small, the surface density of a ring becomes largely independent of the azimuthal angle, resulting in star-forming regions distributed over the whole length of the ring. When the sound speed is large, on the other hand, the ring achieves the largest density at the contact points between the dust lanes and the ring where SF occurs preferentially, leading to a clear age gradient of star clusters in the azimuthal direction. Since rings shrink with time, a radial age gradient of star clusters naturally develop regardless of sound speed, consistent with observations. SF persists over 200 Myr, with an average rate of ${\sim}1.3M_{\odot}/yr$ similar to observed values. Rings gradually become hostile to SF as they lose gas into stars and turbulent motions dominate.
An experimental study is carried out on turbulent diffusion flames stabilized by a circular cylinder in a divergent duct flow. A commercial grade gaseous propane is injected from two slits on the rod as fuel. Flame stability limits, as well as size and temperrature of recirculation zone, are measured by direct and schlieren photographs to clarify the characteristics and structure of diffusion flames and to assess the effect of various divergent angle of duct. The results of the present study are as follows. Temperature in the recirculation zone decreases with increasing divergent angle. The blow-off velocity in parallel duct is higher than that in divergent duct. Critical blow-off velocity is expected to be about 8-12 degree through blow-off velocity pattern. Regardless of divergent angles, the length of recirculation zone is nearly constant, and this length becomes longer with rod diameter. Pressure gradient has an effect on the eddy structure in shear layer behind the rod. With the increase of divergent angle, large scale eddies by dissipated energy in shear layer are split into small scale eddies, and the flame becomes a typical distributedreacting flame.
We are facing the serious environmental pollution difficulties such as acid rain, green house effects, etc. The gaseous matter NOx, SOx, VOCs which are regarded as main factors for these current pollutions are mainly emitted from power plants and vehicles. Therefore several leading countries are regulating the emissions strictly, especially the exhaust emissions from a Diesel engine without an aftertreatment device. The objective of this study is to find out soot and NO removal characteristics focused on the emissions of a Diesel engine by using nonthermal plasma for each engine speeds and loads. Electrostatic precipitator(wire-to-plate type reactor) is used for soot removal. Radicals generated from outer air and put into a mixing chamber in the end of exhaust line are used for NO removal. Concentration of exhaust emissions is analyzed from the gas analyzer(KaneMay) and FTIR to estimate by-products.
The present research proposes a pressure based approach along with Langmuir slip condition for predicting microscale fluid flows. Using this method, gaseous slip flows in 2 -dimensional microchannels are numerically investigated. Compared to the DSMC simulation, statistical errors could be avoided and computing time is much less than that of the aforementioned molecular approach. Maxwell slip boundary condition is also studied in this research. These two slip conditions give similar results except for the pressure nonlinearity at high Knudsen number regime. However, Langmuir slip condition seems to be more promising because this does not need to calculate the streamwise velocity gradient accurately and to calibrate the empirical accommodation coefficient. The simulation results show that the proposed method using Langmuir slip condition is an effective tool for predicting compressibility and rarefaction in microscale slip flows.
