  • The ultra-fine and less agglomerated titanium carbonitride particles were successfully synthesized by magnesiothermic reduction with low feeding rate of $TiCl_4+1/4C_2Cl_4$ solution. The sub-stoichiometric titanium carbide ($TiC_{0.5{\sim}0.6}$) particles were produced by reduction of chlorine component by liquid magnesium at $800^{\circ}C$ of gaseous $TiCl_4+1/4C_2Cl_4$ and the heat treatments in vacuum were performed for 5 hours to remove the residual magnesium and magnesium chloride mixed with produced $TiC_{{\sim}0.5}$. The final $TiC_{{\sim}0.5}N_{0{\sim}0.5}$ particle with near 100 nm in mean size and high specific surface area of $65m^2/g$ was obtained by nitrification under nitrogen gas at $1,150^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs.

  • Among aftertreatment devices which reduce exhaust gas of diesel engine, diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) with high reduction efficiency for gaseous matter and particulate matter is now studied actively. In this study, a transient one-dimensional model developed to simulate the thermal and conversion characteristics of adiabatic monolithic converters operating under warm up conditions is presented. This model takes into account the gas solid heat and mass transfer, axial heat conduction, chemical reactions and the related heat release. The model has been used to analyze the transient response of an axisymmetric catalytic converter during a warm-up as a function of catalyst design parameters and operation conditions in order to observe their effects on the lightoff behaviour. The experimental test was carried out 2400 cc light diesel engine with DOC.

  • Standardized B and V photoelectric light curves of Algol are made with the obsevations obtained during 1982-84 with the 40-cm and the 61-cm reflectors of Yonsei University Observatory. These light curves show asymmetry between ascending and descending shoulders. The ascending shoulder is 0.02 mag brighter than descending shoulder in V light curve and 0.03mag in B light curve. These asymmetric light crves are interpreted as the result of inhomogeneous energy distribution on the surface of one star of the eclipsing pair rather than the result of gaseous stream flowing from KOIV to B8V star. The 180-year periodicity, so called great inequality, are most likely the result proposed by Kim et al.(1983) that the abrupt and discrete mass losses of cooler component may be the cause of this orbital change. The amount of mass loss deduced from these discrete period changes turned out to be of the order of $10^{-6}$ - $10^{-5}M_\odot$.

  • The vortex tube is a simple device for separating a compressed gaseous fluid stream into two flows of high and low temperature without any chemical reactions. Recently, vortex tube is widely used to local cooler of industrial equipments and air supply system. The phenomena of energy separation through the vortex tube was investigated experimentally. This study is focused on the effect of the diameter of cold end orifice diameter on the energy separation. The experiment was carried out with various cold end orifice diameter ratio from 0.22 to 0.78 for different input pressure and cold air flow ratio. The experimental results were indicated that there are an optimum diameter of cold end orifice for the best cooling performance. The maximum cold air temperature difference was appeared when the diameter ratio of the cold end orifice was 0.5. The maximum cooling capacity was obtained when the diameter ratio of the cold end orifice was 0.6 and cold air flow ratio was 0.7.

  • Atmospheric concentrations of PCBs were monitored in Ansung-city, Kyonggi province during the 2001/2002 to characterize the concentration distribution and seasonal variation of particle polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Average concentration of particle bound PCB showed maximum value for penta-CBs and minimum value for octa-CBs. Seasonal contributions $(%\)$ of total particle PCBs showed the highest value in winter months and lowest value in summer month, This result indicated that concentration of total particle PCBs increased with decreasing temperature in the atmosphere. Therefore, particle PCBs were easily formed by the condensation of gas phase PCBs in winter months. The total particle PCBs exhibited an inverse correlation with temperature (p<0.01) which suggested that particle PCBs were easily formed by condensation of gaseous PCBs in winter months.

  • A study on the formation of particulate nitrate$(NO_3^-)$ and gaseous nitrate$(HNO_3)$ in the atmosphere was carried out in Seoul from Oct 8 to 11 1991. To collect $NO_3^-$ and $HNO_3$ in the ambient air, dual filter pack sampler (47mm$\phi$) was used. In the dual filter pack sampler, the first filter was Teflon filter (poresize 1$\mum$) for collection of $NO_3^-$ and the second filter was Nylon filter (poresize 0.45 $\mum$) for $HNO_3$. Particulate nitrate$(NO_3^-)$ and Sulfate ions were analysed by Ion chromatography. $HNO_3$ concentration was higher in the day time $(9.93\mug/m^3)$ than the night time$(3.50\mug/m^3)$, and Particulate nitrate$(NO_3^-)$ concentration was higher in the night time and early morning$(6.21\mug/m^3)$ than the day time$(4.31\mug/m^3)$. The conversion rate of $NO_x$ to total nitrate$(NO_3^-, HNO_3)$ was 7.57%/hr in the day time and 4.79%/hr in the night time, and total average conversion rate was 5.60%/hr.

  • In the present work, the effect of PDF selection and intermittency on the result of the numerical simulation are examined by the simulation of a turbulent methane-air jet diffusion flame. As to the PDFs, beta-function and clipped Gaussian are considered. Results for the pure mixing jet are compared with experimental results. Then, the turbulent flame is calculated for the same conditions and the results obtained for the several models are compared. It is found that the clipped Gaussian distribution coupled with consideration of intermittency recovers the experimental data very well. As to the reacting flow results, the main overall properties of the turbulent jet diffusion flame such as maximum flame temperature are less affected by the choice of the PDF. Flame height and NO emissions, on the contrary, appear to be significantly influenced.

  • Pulverized coal is widely used as the source of electrical power generation and industrial processes. Numerical analysis on the transient ignition process of the cloud of pulverized coal particles in various cases is carried out. Particle radius, initial particle temperature, number density are chosen as major parameters that influence the characteristics of ignition and combustion. The result can be summarized as follow. The ignition occurs at the position that is closed to the surface of the cloud. Maximum temperature and velocity appear at ignition point, and the concentrations of gaseous fuel and oxidizer decrease rapidly near the ignition point. The chemical reaction takes place in wider zone as number density and particle radius decrease. The ignition delay is shortest when particle radius is about $50\;{\mu}m$, and tends to be shorter as number density and initial ambient temperature increase.

  • This paper describes numerical efforts to investigate combustion characteristics of HyShot scramjet combustor, where gaseous hydrogen is transversely injected into a supersonic cross flow. The corresponding altitude, angle of attack, and equivalence ratio are 35-23 km, $0^{\circ}$, and 0.426 respectively. Two-dimensional simulation reasonably predicts combustor inner pressure distribution and reveals periodic combustion characteristics of HyShot scramjet combustor. Altitude effects are also investigated and the strength of flow instability and subsonic boundary layer thickness affect the combustion efficiency according to altitudes. Frequency analyses provide the flow instability effects on the turbulent combustion in HyShot scramjet combustor.

  • Density of catalytic organisms can determine the biodegradation capacity and specific biodegradation rate (SBR). A new index, biodegradation capacity utilization (BCU, %), was developed for estimating the extent of actual biodegradation of a gas compound over the full capacity. Three methanotrophic cultures were serially diluted (1-1/25), and methane SBR and BCU were measured. Consistently, biomass reduction increased the SBR and decreased the BCU. Linearity (p < 0.05, r > 0.97) between the BCU and cell density indicated the reflection of biodegradation capacity by BCU. Therefore, BCU is indicative of whether the density of catalytic organisms is pertinent for SBR evaluation of low-soluble gaseous compounds.
