  • Scuffing and severe wear of the highly stressed sliding components have been very critical problems in the development of a rotary compressor. In order to improve durability and reliability of the compressor, plasma ion-nitriding was applied on the shaft and the vane surface. The effects of different treatment conditions on the mechanical and tribological properties of the ion-nitrided surfaces were investigated. Ion-nitrided surfaces showed better tribological performances than untreated surfaces. The best wear performance was observed when the shaft was nitrided in the condition of 450$\circ$C, 7 hours, $N_2:H_2=1:4$ gas mixture by forming a ductile nitrided layer which has $\gamma'$ phase microstructure. As nitrogen gas pressure increased, $\varepsilon$ phase layer was formed. This hard phase layer was observed to be more beneficial for the vane in reducing friction and wear.

  • The pressure drop in a Venturi Scrubber is predicted using the Eulerian-Lagrangian Method, which is one of the numerical methods to solve the dispersed two-phase flow. KIVA-3V Code is modified to solve the coupled gas-liquid two-phase flow field. The liquid is assumed to be injected through the nozzles with the Rosin-Rammler drop size distribution. The computational results shows good agreement with the experimental data.

  • The results of off-line and on-line diagnostic tests performed on the stator winding of an air-cooled gas turbine(G/T) generator are reported in this paper. Off-line diagnostic tests included measurements of the ac current, dissipation factor(tan${\delta}$), and partial discharge(PD). Six epoxy-mica capacitors were installed in the three phases of G/T generator for performing on-line diagnostic testing with the turbine generator analyzer(TGA). The TGA showed that the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the PD magnitude($Q_m$) were high in phase A of the stator winding. Internal discharges were generated in phases B and C, and slot discharge occurred in phase A. According to the trend analyses of the NQN and $Q_m$ values available for insulation condition assessment for G/T generator stator windings, it was concluded that phases B and C were in good condition, whereas phase A has been significantly deteriorated.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess approaches to modeling coal gasification and combustion in general purpose CFD codes. Coal gasification and combustion involve complex multiphase flows and chemical reactions with strong influences of turbulence and radiation. CFD codes would treat coal particles as a discrete phase and gas species are considered as a continuous phase. An approach to modeling coal reaction in $FLUENT^{(R)}$, selected in this study as a typical commercial CFD code, was evaluated including its devolatilization, gas phase reactions, and char oxidation, turbulence, and radiation submodels. CFD studies in the literature were reviewed to show the uncertainties and limitations of the results. Therefore, the CFD analysis gives useful information, but the results should be carefully interpreted based on understandings on the uncertainties associated with the modelings of coal gasification and combustion.

  • In order to understand the relationship between the phase angle of piston ring and oil consumption was measured by analyzing $CO_2$concentration in exhaust gas. The use of hydrogen fuel not gasoline makes this possible because all of the carbon component in exhaust gas can be assumed to be produced from oil. As a result of experiment, it is known that the oil consumption varies periodically and a specific location of ring end gap was found at each peak of oil consumption. Therefore, it was found that the oil consumption was not constant even at the same operating conditions and this is because the relative locations of top and 2'nd ring end gap change arbitrarily.

  • Conformations of the +5 to +13 charge state of ubiquitin ions have been studied in the gas phase by an Electron Capture Dissociation (ECD) mass spectrometry (MS) technique. This approach has showed that the conformations of the gaseous ions change from the compact to extended structures as the number of protons on the protein ions increases, consistent with previous collisional cross-section measurements by an ion-mobility MS. However, this observation is in contrast to that of the solution-phase where the unique native structure is usually found. The (un)folding stability and kinetics of these gaseous ions were further investigated experimentally using gradual blackbody-radiation or sudden laser-induced thermal heating, respectively. These studies have provided the evidence that the thermodynamics and kinetics of protein (un)folding in the gas phase are quite different from those of the native aqueous proteins.

  • The gas chromatographic behavior of optically active N-(N-benzoyl-L-valyl)-anilide used as stationary phase is described. N-(N-benzoyl-L-valyl)-anilide has been synthesized with good yield under mild condition via Schotten-Bauman process and coated on the Chromosorb W AW (80-100mesh) for the purpose of enantiomer separation. The behavior of this compound as optically active stationary phase for the separation of the enantiomers of N-TFA-D, L-amino acid isopropyl esters has been examined with respect to the correlation between the separation factors and column temperatures. All amino acid enantiomers examined were eluted within one hour and the elution pattern showed retention times increasing in the order of alanine, valine, leucine, threonine, proline and methionine.

  • Effects of operating variables on the solid circulation rate were investigated in a three-phase circulating fluidized bed, of which inside diameter was 0.102m and height was 3.5m, respectively. Gas velocity, primary and secondary liquid velocities, particle size and height of solid particles piled up in the solid recycle device were chosen as operating variables. The solid circulation rate increased with increasing primary and secondary liquid velocities and height of solid particles piled up in the solid recycle device, but decreased with increasing particle size. The value of solid circulation rate decreased only slightly with increasing gas velocity in the riser. The values of solid circulation rate were well correlated in terms of dimensionless groups within the experimental conditions.

  • The resolution of N-trifluoroacetyl (N-TFA) ter-isopropylesters of Ala, Ile, Leu, Val and Phe by gas chromatography on the (S)-5-isobutyl-$N^3$-phenyl-2-thiohydantoin as stationary phase was investigated. The phase was employed at several column temperatures $(140^{\circ}C{\sim}200^{\circ}C)$ and the separation factors were $1.18{\sim}1.45$ range for five amino acid enantiomers. The possible mechanism of chiral recognition was investigated by NMR technique and the association constant$(K_c)$ was calculated as 201.3(r=0.98) for alanyl derivative.

  • The solid-phase extraction (SPF) with subsequent tert-butyldimethylsilyl (TBDMS) derivatization was investigated for the rapid profiling and screening of various carboxylated non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) simultaneously in biological fluid samples. Compared to the conventional SPF in adsorption mode using Chromosorb 102, Chromosorb 107, Carbopak B and Thermosorb, the SPF in partition mode using Chromosorb P as the adsorbent, and ethyl acetate/methylene chloride as the eluting solvents provided hightest overall recovenies of the NSAIDs from aqueous solutions with good precision. The solid-phase extracted NASIDs were silylated with N-methyl-N-(tert-butyldimethylsily)trifuoroacetamide to TBDMS derivatives and directly analyzed by capillary gas chromatography and gs chromatography-mass spectrometry. The usefulness of the present method was examined for the profilling and screening of saliva, serum and urine samples for various NSAIDs simultaneously.
