Removal Characteristics of Benzene in Dielectric Barrier Discharge Process

  • The electrical and chemical properties of the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) process for the benzene removal were investigated. The benzene removal was initiated with the applied voltage higher than the discharge onset value. The removal efficiency over 95 % was obtained at approximately 1.6 kJ lite $r^{r-1}$ of the electrical energy density. The increase of the inlet concentration decreased the removal efficiency. However, the benzene decomposition rate increased with the inlet concentration . While the increase of the gas retention time enhanced the removal efficiency, the decomposition rate decreased. Identification of the optimum condition between the decomposition rate and the removal efficiency is required for field applications of the DBD process.s.

  • Both motion of free metallic particles from which most GIS internal failures are caused and partial discharges from the particles were examined using EHV GIS test chamber. Effects from particle length and gas pressure which are main factors to lead to breakdown failure were investigated theoretically and experimentally. Magnitude of both lift-off voltage and partial discharge inception voltage were measured respectively and, through these measurements, this paper showed the possibility of predicting breakdown fault and of taking action to prevent the fault in advance. The measurement of partial discharge when the particles began to move could be adopted to decide minimum sensitivity in developing predictive diagnostic equipments. Both the amount of apparent discharge and real discharge in GIS were examined theoretically and experimentally, then experimental results were analyzed on the basis of the theory.

Measurement of Ar Temperature of Hollow Cathode Discharge Plasma

  • The plasma temperature of Ar gas in hollow cathode discharge were measured. This is done by measuring the line profile of the 1s/sub 8/-2p/sub 8/ transition in Ar, using a single-frequency diode laser. Low power diode lasers have been successfully used for investigation of the line profiles of Ar transitions in hollow cathode discharges. It turns out that the plasma temperature of Ar is 640∼783 K in the discharge current range at 7∼10 mA.

  • Purpose: A slurry pump for flue gas desulfurization system performs a role that discharges the slurry of a plaster shape in a thermal power plant. Since a slurry pump transfers the slurry by the centrifugal force, it has the friction wear in the impeller and liner because of the slurry. Methods: In this study, failure analysis and test evaluation on the slurry pump have been proposed and the process that reliability of the product improves through design improvement has been presented. And failure cause of typical failure case has been investigated and improvement design has been presented. Results: Reliability improvement is established by analysis of the test results of before and after acceleration test. Conclusion: This study can be provided to improve the product reliability through failure analysis of a slurry pump.

  • A transformer is one of the most important elements in the power network. Transformer faults could cause costly repairs and be dangerous to personnel. To avoid this, its reliable operation has great significance and, therefore, the diagnosis system of the transformer is necessitated. The dissolved gas-in-oil analysis (DGA) is the worldwide popular method of detecting faults such as a hot spot or partial discharges inside the transformer. DGA, however, is not a reliable technique to identify aging phenomena and mechanical faults including insulation failure, inter-turn short, etc. To overcome the drawbacks of DGA, the transfer function method is used to identify effectively these kinds of the mechanical faults.   • A special discharge cell containing a free conducting particle was used to generate the discharges in $SF_6$. The analog bandwidth of the measurement system exceeded 5 GHz. The measured signals were processed to compensate for the response of the measurement system. The discharge current rise time was in the range of 70 ps, while its full-width half-maximum was 120 ps. Single and double current pulses of positive and negative polarities were measured. Likewise, these pulses were compared with the measurement obtained using a conventional partial discharge detector of the IEC60270 type

  • One of the most frequent sources of the accident is metal contaminant in GIS. This paper deals with the characteristics of breakdown voltage of metallic particles using electrodes of various epoxy coating thickness. As experimental results, breakdown voltage of the thickly coated electrode is higher than that of thinly coated electrode. It is considered that resistance of the epoxy coating impedes the development of pre-discharges in the gas.

Decomposition of Odorous Gases in a Pilot-scale Nonthermal Plasma Reactor

  • An experimental study was performed on the decomposition of gaseous ammonia and two selected volatile organic compounds (VOCs: toluene and acetone) in a combined nonthermal plasma reactor with corona and glow discharges. A lab pilot scale reactor (206 liter) equipped with a high electric power pack was used to determine the decomposition efficiency in relation with the inlet concentration and applied voltage. Three different types of discharging electrode such as wired rack, wire strings for corona discharge, and thin plate for glow discharge were put in order in the reactor. While decomposition of ammonia decreased with an increase in the initial concentration, acetone showed an opposite result. In the case of toluene however no explicit tendency was found in toluene and aceton. Negative discharge resulted in high decomposition efficiency than the positive one for all gases. A better removal of gas phase element could be achieved when fume dust were present simultaneously.

  • Recently, atmospheric pressure plasmas attract lots of interests for the useful applications such as surface modification and bio-medical treatment. In this study, a particle-in-cell Monte Carlo collision (PIC-MCC) simulation was adopted to investigate the discharge characteristics of a planar micro dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) with a driving frequency from 13.56 MHz to 162.72 MHz and with a gap distance of 80 micrometers. The variation of frequency, in the change in the electron energy probability function (EEPF). Through the relation between the ion trajectories and the frequency, results in the change of EEPFs is achievable with the turning point of frequency mode. Therefore, it is possible to categorize the efficient operation range of DBDs for its applications by controlling the interactions between plasmas and neutral gas for the generation of preferable radicals.
