In this paper, this prototype system demonstrate convincingly that the application of Gas sensor array to smart phone is a good outlook.
We have been implemented simple statistical pattern recognition methods for harmful gases classification using gas sensors array fabricated by MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) technology. The performance of pattern recognition method as a gas classifier is highly dependent on the choice of pre-processing techniques for sensor and sensors array signals and optimal classification algorithms among the various classification techniques. We carried out pre-processing for each sensor's signal as well as sensors array signals to extract features for each gas. We adapted simple statistical pattern recognition algorithms, which were PCA (Principal Component Analysis) for visualization of patterns clustering and MLR (Multi-Linear Regression) for real-time system implementation, to classify harmful gases. Experimental results of adapted pattern recognition methods with pre-processing techniques have been shown good clustering performance and expected easy implementation for real-time sensing system.
An electronic nose system is an instrument designed far mimicking human olfactory system. It consists generally of gas (odor) sensor array corresponding to olfactory receptors of human nose and artificial neural network pattern recognition technique based on human biological odor sensing mechanism. Considerable attempts to develop the electronic nose system have been made far applications in the fields of floods, drinks, cosmetics, environment monitoring, etc. A portable electronic nose system has been fabricated by using oxide semiconductor gas sensor array and pattern recognition technique such as principal component analysis (PCA) and back propagation artificial neural network The sensor array consists of six thick film gas sensors whose sensing layers are Pd-doped WO$_3$ Pt-doped SnO$_2$ TiO$_2$-Sb$_2$O$_3$-Pd-doped SnO$_2$ TiO$_2$-Sb$_2$O$_{5}$-Pd-doped SnO$_2$+Pd filter layer, A1$_2$O$_3$-doped ZnO and PdCl$_2$-doped SnO$_2$. As an application the system has been used to identify CO/HC car exhausting gases and the identification has been successfully demonstrated.d.
This paper presents to analyze patterns from single and complex malodors using gas sensor array based on metal oxide semiconductors. The aim of research is to identify and discriminate single malodors such as $NH_3$, $CH_3SH$ and $H_2S$ and their mixtures according to concentration levels. Measurement system for analyzing patterns from malodors is constructed by an array of metal oxide semiconductor sensors which are available commercially together with associate electronics. The patterns from sensory system are analyzed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) which is simple statistical pattern recognition technique. Throughout the experimental trails, we confirmed the experimental procedure for measurement system such as sensors calibration time and gas flow rate, and discriminated malodors using pattern analysis technique.

A small-sized gas identification system has been fabricated and characterized using an integrated gas sensor array and artificial neural-network. The sensor array consists of four thick-film oxide semiconductor gas sensors whose sensing layers are $In_{2}O_{3}-Sb_{2}O_{5}-Pd-doped\;SnO_2$ + Pd-coated layer, $La_{2}O_{5}-PdCl_{2}-doped\;SnO_2,\;WO_{3}-doped\;SnO_{2}$ + Pt-coated layer and $ThO_{2}-V_{2}O_{5}-PdCl_{2}\;doped\;SnO_{2}$. The small-sized gas identification instrument is composed of a GMS 81504 containing an internal ROM (4k bytes), a RAM (128 bytes) and four-channel AD converter as MPU, LEDs for displaying alarm conditions for three gases (liquefied petroleum gas: LPG, liquefied natural gas: LNG and carbon monoxide: CO) and interface circuits for them. The instrument has been used to identify alarm conditions for three gases among the real circumstances and the identification has been successfully demonstrated.
Disease discrimination using an electronic nose is achieved by measuring the presence of a specific gas contained in the exhaled breath of patients. Many studies have reported the presence of acetone in the breath of diabetic patients. These studies suggest that acetone can be used as a biomarker of diabetes, enabling diagnoses to be made by measuring acetone levels in exhaled breath. In this study, we perform a chemical sensor array optimization to improve the performance of an electronic nose system using Wilks' lambda, sensor selection based on a principal component (B4), and a stepwise elimination (SE) technique to detect the presence of acetone gas in human breath. By applying five different temperatures to four sensors fabricated from different synthetic materials, a total of 20 sensing combinations are created, and three sensing combinations are selected for the sensor array using optimization techniques. The measurements and analyses of the exhaled breath using the electronic nose system together with the optimized sensor array show that diabetic patients and control groups can be easily differentiated. The results are confirmed using principal component analysis (PCA).
Air quality monitoring is a primary activity for industrial and social environment. The government push for pollutants that must be monitored. Especially, the VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), which are very harmful for human and environment, should be controlled under the government policy. We have been developed a VOCs measurement system which recognize various kinds and quantities of VOCs, such as benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX). Especially, we designed sensor array with various kinds of gas sensor and ANN (Artificial Neural Network) algorithm. The measured values for BTX have errors of-4ppm.
Nine deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences were used to functionalize single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) sensors to detect the trace amount of methanol, acetone, and HCl in vapor. DNA 24 Ma (24 randomly arranged nitrogenous bases with one amine at each end of it) decorated SWNT sensor and DNA 24 A (only adenine (A) base with a length of 24) decorated SWNT sensor have demonstrated the largest sensing responses towards acetone and HCl, respectively. On the other hand, for the DNA GT decorated SWNT sensors with different sequence lengths, the optimum DNA sequence length for acetone and HCl sensing is 32 and 8, separately. The detection of methanol, acetone, and HCl have identified that DNA functionalized SWNT sensors exhibit great selectivity, sensitivity, and repeatability with an accuracy of more than 90%. Further, a sensor array composed of SWNT functionalized with various DNA sequences was utilized to identify acetone and HCl through pattern recognition. The sensor array is a combination of four different DNA functionalized SWNT sensors and two bare SWNT sensors (work as reference). This wireless sensing system has enabled real-time gas monitoring and air quality assurance for safety and security.

A small electronic nose (E-Nose) system has been developed using an 8-channel vapor detection array and personal digital assistant (PDA). The sensor array chip, integrated on a single microheater-embedded polyimide substrate, was made of carbon black-polymer composites with different kinds of polymers and plasticizers. We have successfully classified various volatile organic compounds such as methanol, ethanol, i-propanol, benzene, toluene, n-hexane, n-heptane, and c-hexane with the aid of the sensor array chip, and have evaluated the resolution factors among them, quantitatively. To achieve a PDA-based E-Nose system, we have also elaborated small sensor-interrogating circuits, simple vapor delivery components, and data acquisition and processing programs. As preliminary results show, the miniaturized E-Nose system has demonstrated the identification of essential oils extracted from mint, lavender, and eucalyptus plants.
Forest healing is an activity that enhances immunity and human health using various elements of nature, such as fragrance and scenery. Particularly, phytoncide composed of terpene, a natural volatile substance emitted by forest plants, activates the immune function and is an important raw material in health-related products, such as antibacterial and insect repellents. Moreover, phytoncide is used as a measure to evaluate the impact of the forest atmosphere on the human body. This study aims to implement a highly sensitive gas sensor system that can measure phytoncide in real-time, which is an essential element for realizing a forest healing environment. A gas generation apparatus was implemented by using an adsorption tube in consideration of filed applicability in a laboratory atmosphere to enable the measurement of α-pinene and limonene, which are among the main components of phytoncide. Throughout the experimental trials, the sensitivity of gas sensor arrays to α-pinene and limonene was confirmed. In addition, the classification results demonstrated the AVOCs and NVOCs can be well discriminated using PCA. The primary results confirmed the possibility of developing a high-sensitivity gas sensor system for phytoncide sensing in real time.
