The transient fields generated during switching operations in a Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) are associated with high frequency components in the order of few tens of MHz. These transient fields leak into the external environment of the gas-insulated equipment and can interfere with the nearby electronics. Measurements of the transient fields are thus required to characterise the interference caused by switching phenomena in such substations. In view of the above, E-field emission measurement during a switching operation has been carried out for a 245 kV GIS model, using a resonant dipole antenna and D-dot sensor. The characteristics of the E-fields i.e., frequency spectra and their levels have been analysed and are reported in the paper. Suitability of the measurements has been confirmed by comparing frequency spectra of the measured and computed transient fields.
Substations in Korea are classified into an outdoor steel structure type, an outdoor GIS(Gas Insulated Switchgear) type, an indoor GIS type, an underground GIS type, and a complex GIS type. Before 1970, substations were built in outdoor steel structure types only. In 1980, an 154kV indoor GIS type substation was built for the first time in Pusan. And the first 345kV indoor GIS type substation, the first 765kV full GIS substation were built in 1984 and in 2002 each. In 1998, 154kV indoor type substations were standardized into regular type and urban type which applied steel frames to structures. In 2002, this was re-standardized into five different types in detail. In 2007, hub substations which had high capacity were built in the region of industrial zone and heavy load areas. And 154kV compact substation was developed and standardized by compacting an indoor GIS type substation in 2009. This paper would present a series of substation type transition and application standards for substation types and facility scales.

An ultra high frequency (UHF) coupler possessing ultra wide band (UWB) characteristics ranging from hundreds of MHz to several GHz is desirable for the detection of the partial discharge (PD) pulses because the pulses propagate with rise time shorter than one nanosecond in a gas-insulated substation (GIS). Thus, the authors have proposed a log-periodic antenna for GIS PD detection. Various parameters of the coupler such as frequency bandwidth, coupler gain, radiation pattern, and coupler geometry were considered throughout the simulations. The experiments for the detection characteristics of the coupler were carried out in the mock-up GIS chamber. The results indicated that the detection characteristics of the coupler are dependent on the installation angle of the coupler, the position of the coupler in the hand hole and the existence of the spacer.
The recent power system is required to a large size of facilities and high power technology according to increasing power demand. However, it could lead to spoiling the beauty of city and environment problem. The miniaturized facilities with large capacity such as GIS have been required in recent power system. The GIS(Gas Insulated Substation) using the SF6 insulation gas enables to miniaturize facilities with large capacity with high insulation performance. However, the substation installed GIS has required to new design model which is different from the conventional substation. The TRV(Transient Recovery Voltage) analysis on simple circuit may applied by differential equation. However, in case of relatively complicated system, EMTP(Electro Magnetic Transients Program) mainly has been used to design and simulate for transient analysis. This paper mainly design the 22.9 kV GIS system and analyze the transient recovery voltage of main circuit breaker using EMTP/RV. It also enables to easily design the other substation installed GIS with same maker and voltage level because the proposed GIS model consists of separated modules such as busbar, circuit breaker, bushing, CT, PT etc. Eventually, it contributes to comfortably compare the interrupting performance of circuit breaker and system TRV corresponding to the substation system configuration.
Recently, substations have been constructed in GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) and indoor type because of the increasing difficulties of securing locations. In case of urban substations, it is also common that the substations are exclusively fed by underground cables. Sometimes, the infrastructures in urban area, such as communication facilities, are located near substations to be constructed. In this paper, we examined such a case that a branch office building of KT(Korea Telecom) was located near 154 kV underground GIS substation under construction with about 100 meters of the lateral distance between two facilities. GPR (Ground Potential Rise) at the substation and the transferred earth potential at the KT building through the earth in SLG (Single-Line-to- Ground) fault condition were investigated based on a series of computer simulations. The calculated earth potential at a distance of 100 m from the substation was below 120 V which satisfying the limit value of 650 V.

In a gas insulated substation (GIS), Very Fast Transient Over-voltages (VFTOs) are generated due to switching operations and ground faults. These fast transients are associated with high frequency components of the order of a few hundreds of MHz. These transients may cause internal faults i.e., layer-to-layer faults or minor faults in a capacitively graded bushing, which is one of the important pieces of terminal equipment for GIS. In the present study, the PSPICE model has been developed to calculate the voltage distribution across the layers of 420kV graded bushing for high frequency pulses of rise time 1 to 50ns, which simulate the VFTO. For this simulation, an equivalent electrical network of bushing with different equivalent layers has been considered. The effect of different equivalent layers modeling circuits on the non-uniform voltage factor has been analysed. The influence of copper strip inductance on voltage distribution across layers has also been analysed for various rise times of high frequency transients. Finally, the leakage current of the bushing is calculated for evaluating the bushing condition under these transients.
In order to evaluate the structural safety from an earthquake, the seismic analysis of large structures such as GIS in electric power substations and equipments for nuclear power plant has been carried out because the seismic qualification by experiment is very expensive. This paper presents the seismic analysis of the 72.5kV GIS produced by LGIS. The finite element model of the GIS is developed and analyzed using ANSYS. The model consists of beam elements for the enclosures and mass elements for the conductors and the mechanisms. Using the transient analysis under seismic load, the structural safety is verified.
Bulky iron-core potential transformers (PT) are installed in a tank of gas insulated switchgears (GIS) for a system voltage measurement in power substations. In this paper, we studied an electronic voltage transformer (EVT) embedded in a spacer for miniaturization, eco-friendliness, and performance improvement of GIS. The prototype EVT consists of a capacitive probe (CP) that can be embedded in a spacer and a voltage Follower with a high input and a low output impedance. The CP was fabricated in the form of a Flexible-PCB to acquire the insulation performance and to withstand vibration and shock during operation. Voltage ratio of the prototype EVT is about 42,270, and the frequency bandwidth of -3 dB ranges from 0.33 Hz to 3.9 MHz. The voltage ratio error evaluated at about 6%, 12% and 18% of the rated voltage of 170 kV was 0.32%, and the phase error was 12.9 minutes. These results were within the accuracy for the class 0.5 specified in IEC 60044-7 and satisfy even in ranges from 80% to 120% of the rated voltage. If the prototype EVT replaces the conventional iron-core potential transformer, it is expected that the height of the GIS could be reduced by 11% and the amount of SF6 will be reduced by at least 10%.
This paper presents the simulation results for the analysis of a lightning surge, switching transients and very fast transients within a thermal plant. The modeling of gas insulated substations (GIS) makes use of electrical equivalent circuits that are composed of lumped elements and distributed parameter lines. The system model also includes some generators, transformers, and low voltage circuits such as 24V DC rectifiers and control circuits. This paper shows the simulation results, via EMTP (Electro-Magnetic Transients Program), for three overvoltage types, such as transient overvoltages, switching transients, very fast transients and a lightning surge.
The digital substation automation system has contributed hugely to increasing the stability of power systems by providing not only protection and control of power systems but diagnostic features alongside them. Digital substation automation systems in the scale of substations consist of integrated operation systems and intelligent electronic devices. The main intelligent electronic devices currently in use are digital protection relays and the bay controllers in Gas insulated switchgears. Proficiently accomplishing the coordination of protection within the power system as a means of ensuring reliability and contriving for the stability of power supply through connection of function, the application of bay controllers is crucial, which collectively manage the protection relay at the bay level in order to achieve both. In this research, the bay controllers to be used in high-voltage Gas insulated switchgear has been localized, and in particular, the logic function and editor required in order to minimize the complicated hardware-like cable connections in the local panel have been developed. In addition, to ensure the strength and reliability of the bay controller hardware developed herein, the type tests from KERI have been successfully completed.
