  • For heat pumps used in a cold region, it is very important to obtain appropriate heating capacity. Several studies using a variable speed compressor and an additional heater have been performed to enhance heating capacity at low ambient temperatures. However, for outdoor temperature conditions below $-15^{\circ}C$, it is still difficult to obtain enough heating capacity above the rated value. In recent studies, the application of gas injection technique into a two-stage heat pump yielded noticeable heating performance improvement at low temperature conditions. In this study, the heating performance of a two-stage gas injection heat pump with a rated capacity of 3.5 kW was measured and analyzed by varying refrigerant charge amount and EEV opening at the standard heating condition. The heating performance of the two-stage gas injection heat pump was compared with that of a two-stage non-injection heat pump. The heating capacity and COP of the two-stage gas injection heat pump were improved by 2-10% at the optimal charging condition over those of the two-stage non-injection heat pump.

  • Air-source heat pumps are widely used in residential heating systems. However, the decrease in the capacity of the heat pump is unavoidable when operating at very low and high ambient temperatures. The vapor injection technique is considered a promising technology to overcome this problem. Recent research on vapor injection cycles have mainly adopted a scroll compressor with an internal heat exchanger at severe operating conditions. This study measured the COP and EER of a gas injection heat pump using a flash tank with an inverter-driven rotary compressor at severe operating conditions. Compared to non-injection heat pumps, the heating capacity and COP of the gas injection heat pump improved up to 15% and 2.9%, respectively, at outdoor temperatures of $-10^{\circ}C$ to $7^{\circ}C$. The cooling capacity of the gas injection heat pump was 11% higher than the non-injection heat pump at an outdoor temperature of $35^{\circ}C$. At the same time, the EER of the gas injection heat pump was similar to that of the non-injection heat pump.

The operating parameters considered in this study include superheating degree, pressure and outlet temperature of gas cooler, compressor efficiency and evaporating temperature in the R134a supercritical heat pump system. The main results were summarized as follows : Superheating degree, pressure and outlet temperature of gas cooler, compressor efficiency and evaporating temperature of R134a heat pump system have an effect on the heating capacity, compression work and COP of this system. With a thorough grasp of these effect, it is necessary to design the supercritical heat pump using R134a. The prediction for COP of R134a supercritical heat pump have been proposed through multiple regression analysis.

  • There are some efforts to improve the performance of electrical heat pump(EHP) and replace it with an alternative cooling equipment such as gas engine-driven heat pump(GHP), a gas cooling equipment, in order to solve the problem of summer electricity supply through reducing the summer electricity peak. This paper analyzes cost-benefit in accordance with replacement of electrical cooling system by gas cooling system using california standard test and sensitivity analysis of some scenarios.

  • Central control air-conditioning systems are being replaced with individually controlled air-conditioning system in the university. The amount of growth of electricity consumption is due to the increasing demand of electric heat pump. In winter and summer, the energy consumption showed a tendency to increase. On the other hand, showed less energy in spring and autumn. Increase the amount of electricity than the degree of decline in gas consumption was higher. Can be considered as transitional phenomena. Because electric heat pump, gas driven heat pump and the absorption chiller-heater are used at the same time in some of the buildings.

  • Existing cooling technologies no longer provide adequate heat dissipation due to excessive heat generation caused by the growing component density on electronic devices. An ionic gas pump can be used for the thermal management of micro-electronic devices, since the size of pump can be reduced to a micrometer scale. In addition, the gas pump allows for gas flow control and generation without moving parts. This ideal property of gas pump gives rise to a variety of applications. However, all these applications require maximizing the wind velocity of gas pump. In this study a barrier discharge type gas pump, with a needle-shaped corona electrode instead of a plate-shaped corona electrode, has been investigated by focusing on the corona electrode shape on the wind velocity and wind generation yield. As a result, the enhanced wind velocity and wind generation yield of 1.76 and 3.37 times were obtained with the needle-shaped corona electrode as compared with the plate-shaped corona electrode of the proposed barrier discharge type gas pump.

  • The performance characteristics of water-chilling heat pump using $CO_2$ with respect to variation of refrigerant charge amount was investigated experimentally. An experimental apparatus is consisted of a compressor, a gas cooler, an expansion valve, an evaporator and a liquid receiver. All heat exchangers used in the test rig are counter-flow-type heat exchangers with concentric dual tubes, which are made of copper. The gas cooler and the evaporator consist of 6 and 4 straight sections respectively arranged in parallel, each has 2400 mm length. The experimental results summarize as the followings : As the refrigerant charge ratio of $CO_2$ heat pump system increases, the discharge pressure and compressor ratio increases, but mass flow rate of refrigerant decreases. Also the compressor work increases with the increase of refrigerant charge ratio. However, the heating and cooling capacity of $CO_2$ heat pump decreases as the refrigerant charge ratio increases. The maximum heating COP of $CO_2$ heat pump system presented at 0.25 refrigerant charge ratio. It is possible to confirm the optimum charge ratio of $CO_2$ heat pump system by the viewpoint of heating COP.

  • A third-order simulation model of a Vuilleumier{VM) heat pump has been developed. This model takes into account the major losses such as the heat conduction losses through regenerators and displacers, the pumping losses and the wall-to-gas heat transfer losses in active volumes, in addition to the heat exchanger and regenerator losses. The working volume was divided into 12 control volumes and the conservation equations of mass and energy were applied to each control volume. Pressure drops were considered in regenerators only. Thermodynamic behavior of the working gas in a VM heat pump was investigated and effects of the major losses and operating conditions on the performance of a VM heat pump were shown.

  • Recently, the amount of electrical heat pump(EHP), a electrical conditioning equipment, is sharply increasing due to the luxury and multi-story trend of building. Accordingly, the cooling load that occupying substantial part of summer electric consumption has increased dramatically, making difficulties in domestic supply of electricity in summer. There are some efforts to replace it with an alternative cooling equipment such as gas heat pump(GHP), a gas cooling equipment, in order to solve the problem of summer electricity supply through reducing the summer electricity peak. It is rare, however, to find studies on the actual effects of GHP on the reduction of summer electricity peak. This study, therefore, estimated the effects of the GHP on the summer electricity peak by the gas consumption and characteristics of gas cooling systems. In addition, electric substitution effects by gas cooling systems were analyzed through case studies in the summer of 2010.

  • In this study, experimental study on the heating performance of a $CO_2$ heat pump with gas injection was performed varying gas injection ratio and outdoor temperature to improve the heating performance of $CO_2$ heat pump. The twin rotary compressor having volume ratio of 0.7 was adopted in the $CO_2$ heat pump. From the test results, the heating capacity and COP were increased and the compressor discharge temperature was decreased with the increase of injection ratio. At the outdoor temperature of $-8^{\circ}C$, the heating capacity and COP with the injection were increased by 45% and 24%, respectively, compared with non-injection condition.
