Cobalt ($Co^{2+}$) doped yttria stabilized cubic zirconia (YSZ, $Y_2O_3\;:\;25{\sim}50wt%$) single crystals grown by a skull melting method were heat-treated in $N_2\;at\;1000^{\circ}C$ for 5 hrs. The reddish brown single crystals were changed into either violet or blue color, respectively. Before and after heat treatment, the Co-doped YSZ crystals cut for wafers (${\phi}6.5{\times}t\;2mm$) and round brilliant (${\phi}10mm$). The optical and structural properties were examined by UV-VIS spectrophotometer and XRD. These results are analyzed absorption by $Co^{2+}\;(^4A_2(^4F)\to{^4P})\;and\;Co^{3+}$, change of energy gap and lattice parameter.
Counter-current two-phase flows of air- water in narrow rectangular channels with offset strip fins have been experimentally investigated in a 760 mm long and 100 mm wide test section with 3.0 and 5.0 mm gap widths. The two-phase flow regime, channel-average void fractions and two-phase pressure gradients were studied. Flow regime transition occurred at lower superficial velocities of air than in the channels without fins. In the bubbly and slug flow regimes, elongated bubbles rose along the subchannel formed by fins without lateral movement. The critical void fraction for the bubbly-to-slug transition was about 0.14 for the 3 mm gap channel and 0.2 for the 5 mm gap channel. respectively. Channel-average void fractions in the channels with fins were almost the same as those in the channels without fins. Void fractions increased as the gap width increased, especially at high superficial velocity of air. The presence of fins enhanced the two-phase distribution parameter significantly in the slug flow, where the effect of gap width was almost negligible. Superficial velocity of air dominated the two-phase pressure gradients. Liquid superficial velocity and channel gap width has only a minor effect on the pressure gradients.

The performance characteristics of magnetic fluid seals are studied numerically as a function of working gap, pole width, angle of pole sharpening, and shaft speed. The temperature distribution of a magnetic fluid seal with multiple tooth is investigated as a function of the contact fraction of magnetic fluids at the periphery of pole tooth using a finite element method. The most significant design parameter of a magnetic fluid seal is the working gap between the pole pieces and the rotating shaft. The result shows that with increasing the working gap, the friction torque decreases radically. The practical working gap for the pole pieces with triangular tooth zone profile is 0.2-0.4mm. The FEM results indicate that the optimal filling of a magnetic fluid between the pole pieces and the shaft is very important due to the accumulations of nonuniform friction heating within the pole pieces, which may interfere the magnetic circuit flow.

The design parameter of the heat loss for the pressurized water reactor has been studied. The heat loss from the reactor vessel through the air gap. insulation are analysed by using the computational fluid dynamics code, FLUENT. Parametric study has been performed on the air gap width between the reactor vessel wall and the inner surface of the insulation, and on the insulation thickness. Also evaluated is the performance degradation due to the chimney effect due to gaps left between the panels during the installation of the insulation system. From the analysis results, the optimal with of air gap and insulation thickness and the value of heat loss are obtained The results show how the heat loss varies with the air gap width and insulation thickness. The temperature and the velocity distributions are also presented. From the results of the evaluation. the optimal air gap width and the optimal insulation thickness are obtained. As the difference between the predicted heat loss and measured heat loss from the reactor vessel is construed Primarily as losses due to chimney effect. the contribution of the chimney effect to the total heat loss is quantitatively indicated.
A CCFL(Counter Current Flow Limit) test have been performed in narrow annular gaps with large diameter, because it has been confirmed that the CCFL phenomena affected the critical power in hemispherical narrow gap geometries from the SONATA(Simulation Of Naturally Arrested Thermal Attack)-IV (In-Vessel)/VISU(Visualization)-II experiments. The objectives of the CCFL experiments are to investigate the small gap sizes(1, 2mm) effect on CCFL under the large diameter condition and to confirm the findings of the VISU-II study that global dryout in hemispherical narrow gaps was induced by the CCFL. The test section was made of acrylic resin to allow visual observation on the two-phase flow behaviors inside annular gaps. It was observed from visualization that a part of water supplied was accumulated in the upper plenum and a significant increase in the differential pressure across the gap was occurred, which was the definition of the CCFL occurrence in this experimental study. From the experimental results in annular gap with large diameter it can be known that an increase in the differential pressure was not big at small air flow-rates. When the CCFL was occurred, the differential pressure across gaps was increased significantly and a water accumulated in the upper plenum. The occurrence of CCFL was correlated using the Wallis parameter.
The microstructure and bond strength were investigated on the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints brazed by Ag-5at%Ti alloy. Ag-5at%Ti-2at%Fe and -5at%Fe brazing alloys were also used to see the effects of Fe addition on the bond strength of SiC/SiC brazed joints. Brazing temperature and brazing gap were selected and examined as brazing variables. The microstructure of SiC/SiC brazed joints was affected by Fe addition to the Ag-5at%Ti alloy, but the bond strength was not. Increasing brazing temperature also changed the microstructure of $Ti_5Si_3$ reaction layer and brazing alloy matrix of the SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel joints, but not the bond strength. Brazing gap had a great effects on the bond strength. Decreasing brazing gap from 0.2 mm to 0.1 mm in SiC/SiC brazing increased the bond strength from 187 MPa to 263 MPa and, in SiC/mild steel brazing, from 189 MPa to 212 MPa. It was concluded that the most important parameter on the bond strength in SiC/SiC and SiC/mild steel brazing was the relative ratio between brazing gap and specimen size.
Air gap flux density is obtained strictly from air gap permeance and MMF distribution using the design parameter of BLDCM when the stator slot is considered. Then the theoretical equations representing the cogging torque and BEMF are proposed. The effect of skew is described analytically, and skew effect on air gap permeance and MMF is studied. Consequently we verified analytically that skew of slots and magnets influenced on the reduction of the cogging torque and BEMF ripple, and the shape of BEMF.
Superconducting fault current limiters (SFCLs) provide one of the most effective solutions to cope with enormous increase of fault current level. The 13.2 kV/ 630 A class resistive SFCL using coated conductor (CC) was developed and its short-circuit test was successful. Successful commercialization of the SFCL requires that no loss is produced by impedance of limiting coil during normal operation. Since the limiting coil consists of inner layer and outer layer, gap length between the layers is an important parameter to analyze the electromagnetic characteristics of coil. This paper deals with the electromagnetic characteristics of coil according to gap length through the simulation and analysis in comparison with experiment results.

For an electrical insulation design of HTS cable, it is important to understand the dielectric characteristics of insulation materials in L$N_2$ and the insulation type. Generally, the electrical insulation of HTS Cable is classified into two types of the composite insulation and solid insulation type. In this research, we selected the insulation paper/L$N_2$ composite insulation type for the electric insulation of a HTS cable, and studied electric insulation characteristics of synthetic Laminated Polypropylene Paper(LPP) in liquid nitrogen(L$N_2$) for the application to high temperature superconducting(HTS) cable. Furthermore, we compared the breakdown characteristics of the butt gap and bended mini-model cable. It is necessary to understand the winding parameter of insulation paper/LN2 composite insulation.
Characteristics of Discharge and nonthermal plasma generation in a micro-air gap spacing between a micro-dielectric barrier and a electrode have been investigated experimentally to chert the potential to be used as a micro-scale nonthermal plasma generator. It is found that the output ozone concentration, as a nonthermal plasma intensity parameter, of the micro-air gnp nonthermal plasma generator depended greatly upon the air gap spacing and thickness of the dielectric barrier. As a result, there is a optimal air gap sparing in the same micro dielectric barrier to generate ozone effectively. And the higher ozone concentration was generated from the thinner micro-barrier.
