Simulation of Low Temperature Plasmas for an Ultra Violet Light Source using Coplanar Micro Dielectric Barrier Discharges

  • The discharge characteristics of pulse-driven coplanar micro barrier discharges for an ultraviolet (UV) light source using Ne-Xe mixture have been investigated using a two-dimensional fluid simulation at near-atmospheric pressure. The densities of electrons, the radiative excited states, the metastable excited states, and the power loss are investigated with the variations of gas pressure and the gap distance. With a fixed gap distance, the number of the radiative states $Xe^*(^3P_1)$ increases with the increasing driving voltage, but this number shows weak dependency on the gas when that pressure is over 400 Torr. However, the number of the radiative states increases with the increase of the gap distance at a fixed voltage, while the power loss decreases. Therefore, a long gap discharge has higher efficiency for UV generation than does a short gap discharge. A slight change in the electrode tilt angle enhances the number of radiative species 2 or 3 times with the same operation conditions. Therefore, the intensity and efficiency of the UV light source can be controlled independently by changing the gap distance and the electrode structure.

Water-splitting Performance of TiO2 Nanotube Arrays Annealed in NH3 Ambient

  • Increase of surface area and decrease of band gap in $TiO_2$ semiconductors are significant to improve the efficiency of water splitting by photoelectrolysis. In this study $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays with ~7 um length and ~100 nm diameter were fabricated by an anodizing technique of titanium foils using DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide)-based electrolytes. Then to control the band gap of the $TiO_2$ arrays, they were annealed at $550^{\circ}C$ for up to 180 min in $NH_3$ gas ambient. The samples annealed in $NH_3$ gas for 30 min and 60 min showed superior photo-conversion efficiency for water splitting under white and visible light. A $TiO_2$ nanotube annealed in $NH_3$ gas ambient for a period longer than 120 min showed 1 order higher leakage current. It is believed that the decrease of band gap and increase of conductivity in $TiO_2$ nanotube arrays due to $NH_3$ gas treatments result in the superior water-splitting performance.

  • Ozone is a powerful disinfectant and oxidizing agent, and it is used in a wide range of applications, such as waste water treatment, food processing, etc.. There is also a great potential of using ozone in new emerging medical applications, such as ozone dentistry and ozone oxygen therapy. For these purposes, simple, small, compact and efficient sources of ozone are needed. In this study, in order to increase the current-voltage range of the discharge and to avoid the overheating of the gas in the ozonizer we suggested ozonizer of injection needle and plate electrode type(INP Type) with the gas through the needle. A ozonizer of INP type have been investigated by focusing on ozone concentration and yield according to flow rates and Gap of two electrodes. The results of studies of ozone production for DC corona discharge in oxygen at atmospheric pressure about the ozonizer of INP type. The ozone concentration and the generation yield increased as the gap of two electrodes and gas flow were decreased. Also, when the gap of two electrodes and gas flow with no change, the ozone concentration and generation yield each have variation of direct proportion and inverse proportion with discharge voltage.

  • The use of Zn coated steel has increased in the automotive industry due to its excellent corrosion resistance. Conventionally the BIW(body-in-white) structure and the hang-on parts have been made of Zn coated steel and more recently Zn coated steel began to be applied in the chassis parts. During gas metal arc (GMA) welding of the chassis part, lap fillet joint used to be adopted but spatter generation and porosities are most important concerns. In the industrial applications, an intentional joint gap was made to avoid the weld defects but it is not easy to control the size of joint gap. In this research, gas tungsten arc (GTA) is combined with GMA welding where GTA precedes GMA. As pulsed arc was adopted as GMA, GTA was oscillated along the longitudinal direction by pulsing GMA, but the arc oscillation did not disturb the molten droplet transfer of GMA welding. By increasing the distance between GTA and GMA, the length of weld pool increased and porosity could be reduced. Moreover porosity in the welds was fully removed when the distance between two arcs was 15 mm.

출력 감발 조건하에서 핵분열 기체 생성물의 방출에 대한 축방향 기체 유동과 핵연료 파손의 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on Effects of Axial Gas Flow in the Gap and Fuel Cracking on Fission Gas Release under Power Ramping)

  • SPEAR-BETA코드에서 사용된 핵분열 기체 방출 모델을 핵연료와 피복관 사이의 갭(gap)과 플레넘(plenum) 사이에서 축방향 핵분열 기체 혼합과 균열된 핵연료에 대한 유효 열전도도를 사용함으로써 개량하여, P$_{max}$$\Delta$P가 변하는 다양한 출력 감발 조건하에서 핵분열기체 방출 거동을 해석하였다. 핵연료 균열의 영향을 고려한 유효 열전도도는 핵연료의 온도 분포와 내부 기체 압력을 계산하는데 사용되었고, 축방향 기체 유동으로 인한 혼합(mixing)과 회석(dilution)효과는 갭의 폭과 열전도도를 해석하는데에 고려되었다. 축방향 기체 유동 효과를 계산하는데 있어서 계산속도를 빠르게 하기 위하여 유한차분법의 하나인 Crank-Nicholson 방법을 사용하였다. 개량된 모델은 다양한 출력 감발 조건하에서 얻어진 실험 자료들과 SPEAR-BETA와 FEMAXl-IV 코드들에서 사용되는 모델들로부터 얻은 결과들을 비교함으로써 검증하였다. 개량된 모델의 결과는 위의 두 코드로부터 얻은 결과 보다는 실험자료들과 잘 일치하였다. 균열된 핵연료에 대해 유효 열전도도를 사용하여 계산한 핵연료의 중심 온도는 균열되지 않은 핵연료의 경우에 비해 20$0^{\circ}C$ 정도보다 높은 값을 나타냈고, 개량된 핵분열 기체 생성물의 분율은 SPEAR-BETA코드에서 얻은 값보다 평균 6% 정도가 높게 나타났다.평균 6% 정도가 높게 나타났다.다.

Development of a Simplified Fuel-Cladding Gap Conductance Model for Nuclear Feedback Calculation in 16$\times$16 FA

  • The accurate determination of the fuel-cladding gap conductance as functions of rod burnup and power level may be a key to the design and safety analysis of a reactor. The incorporation of a sophisticated gap conductance model into nuclear design code for computing thermal hydraulic feedback effect has not been implemented mainly because of computational inefficiency due to complicated behavior of gap conductance. To avoid the time-consuming iteration scheme, simplification of the gap conductance model is done for the current design model. The simplified model considers only the heat conductance contribution to the gap conductance. The simplification is made possible by direct consideration of the gas conductivity depending on the composition of constituent gases in the gap and the fuel-cladding gap size from computer simulation of representative power histories. The simplified gap conductance model is applied to the various fuel power histories and the predicted gap conductances are found to agree well with the results of the design model.

  • Closing switch, key component of pulsed power system, is constructed simply and used frequently due to the easy control and manufacture of one. The kind of one are spark-gap, triggered vacuum switch, pseudo-spark switch and INPIStron. But the electrode of spark gap switch is damaged with the hot spot by Z-pinch and then the life of one become short. INPIStron with inverse pinch effect has long life but it is difficult trigger system to provide uniform discharge between cathode and anode. In this paper, the design and manufacturing of INPIStron with gas puffing trigger method in order to supply uniform discharge inter-electrode and the performance of the developed INPIStron applied to 500[kA]-2[MJ] pulsed power system is presented.

  • This paper presents dielectric characteristics of $SF_6$ gas stressed by the non-oscillating and oscillating impulse voltages in inhomogeneous fields disturbed by metallic protrusion. The propose of this investigation is to present the predischarge development and dielectric characteristics of $SF_6$ gas under VFTOs. The experiments were carried out using a needle-to-plane and two needles-to-plane gap geometries in the gas pressure ranges from 0.1 to 0.5 MPa. The gap separation was 22 mm and the needle-shaped protrusions were made of stainless steel 10 mm in length and 1.0 mm in diameter. As a result, it was found that the breakdown mechanism and predischarge current are principally dependent on applied voltage waveform and polarity.

  • The effect of an insulator inserted along the axis of a red-to-plane gap on an ion flow field in $SF_6$ gas is investigated experimentally in the pressure region where a proceeding corona discharge exists. Without the insulator, the calculated electric field on the plane electrode agrees fairly well with the measured one. With the insulator, the ion flow field characteirstics may be attributed to the change in the electric field distribution by the accumulated charge, the increase in the ratio of the dielectric strength in gas gap to that along the insulator surface with the gas pressure, and the thermal diffusion of ions near the insulator.
