  • This paper presents the landslide characteristics occurred in Hoengseong, Gangwondo and around July 16 in 2006, caused by heavy rainfall and antecedent precipitation by two typhoons of Ewiniar and Bilis. The main causes of landslides were antecedent precipitation between July 12 to 13, resulting in weakening grounds by increasing the degree of saturation previously, and the additional heavy rainfall between July 15 to 16. Most of landslides at natural slopes were transitional failures occurred along the boundary between residual weathered soil in shallow depth and hard mother rock. From the results of conclusive analyses for 100 sites in Hoengseong region where landslides occurred, the slope length of landslide and slope width were less than 100m with 87% of frequency and 30m with 74% of frequency, respectively. The average value of slope angles was $24^{\circ}$.

  • This paper discussed the Feasibility study of wind power generation considering the topographical characteristics of Korea. In order to estimate the exact generation of wind power plants, we analyzed and compared wind resources in mountain areas and plain areas by introducing not only wind speed, the most important variable, but also wind distribution and wind standard deviation that can reflect the influence of landform sufficiently. According to the results of this study, generation was almost the same at wind power plants installed in southwestern coastal areas where wind speed was low as at those installed in mountain areas in Gangwondo where wind speed was high. This demonstrates that the shape parameter of wind distribution is low due to the characteristics of mountain areas, and the standard deviation of wind speed is large due to the effect of mountain winds, therefore, actual generation compared to southwestern coastal areas is almost similar in mountain areas even though wind speed is high.

  • This study is a preliminary investigation into the development of a construction method that will protect a reservoir even during over flows caused by severe flooding. Through hydraulic modeling tests, the destructive phenomena caused by spillway-junction scour during reservoir overflow were modeled, and the effects on the embankment during such an overflow and the spillway-junction movements are discussed. The reservoir destruction model used the Tanbu reservoir, located in Gangwondo Chuncheon-si Namsanmyeon (H=22 m, L=115 m), as the model reservoir and created an embankment with a 1/60 ratio. We review the spillway-junction safety factor during overflow and embankment movement following reinforcement measures for three different cases: no reinforcement, cemented sand and gravel (CSG) reinforcement and water-blocking sheet reinforcement. The results of this study confirmed that when the spillway-junction is exposed to soil, it is very vulnerable to overflow and that a water-blocking sheet or CSG reinforcement are very effective measures in preventing embankment destruction in the long-term period.

  • There is a growing preference for using doubled haploids (DHs) in maize breeding programs because they reduce the time required to generate and evaluate new lines to 2 years or less. However, there is an urgent need for efficient techniques that accurately discriminate between haploid and diploid maize kernels. Here, we investigate the effects of several hormones and chemicals on the germination of haploid and diploid maize kernels, including auxin, cytokinin, ethylene, abscisic acid (ABA) biosynthesis inhibitor (fluridone), ABA catabolism inhibitor (diniconazole), methyl jasmonate (MeJA), and NaCl. Ethylene effectively stimulated the germination of both haploid and diploid maize kernels. The ABA biosynthesis inhibitor fluridone, the ABA catabolism inhibitor diniconazole, and MeJA selectively stimulated the germination of haploid maize kernels. By contrast, gibberellin, 1-naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA), kinetin, and NaCl inhibited the germination of both haploid and diploid maize kernels. These results indicate that the germination of haploid maize kernels is selectively stimulated by fluridone and diniconazole, and suggest that ABA-mediated germination of haploid maize kernels differs from that of diploid maize kernels and other plant seeds.
