  • Using Cs-137 and Co-60 gamma-ray irradiation systems, the buildup factors for 2.9 cm thick lead absorber and the air scattering factors are determined for different beam solid angles from$2.4{\pi}{\times}10^{-3}sr\;to\;17.3{\pi}{\times}10^{-3}sr$. The corresponding buildup factors are turned out to be the values from 1.054 to 1.194 and the scattering factors to be the values from 1 to 1.064, respectively. To verify our results, calculated values using these factors and experimental values are compared. The differences between them are not more than 3. 3%.

  • Background: This work aims to develop a new imaging system based on a pulse shape discrimination-capable Cs2LiYCl6:Ce (CLYC) scintillation detector combined with the rotational modulation collimator (RMC) technique for dual-particle imaging. Materials and Methods: In this study, a CLYC-based RMC system was designed based on Monte Carlo simulations, and a prototype was fabricated. Therein, a rotation control system was developed to rotate the RMC unit precisely, and a graphical user interface-based software was also developed to operate the data acquisition with RMC rotation. The RMC system was developed to allow combining various types of collimator masks and detectors interchangeably, making the imaging system more versatile for various applications and conditions. Results and Discussion: Operational performance of the fabricated system was studied by checking the accuracy and precision of the collimator rotation and obtaining modulation patterns from a gamma-ray source repeatedly. Conclusion: The prototype RMC system showed reliability in its mechanical properties and reproducibility in the acquisition of modulation patterns, and it will be further investigated for its dual-particle imaging capability with various complex radioactive source conditions.

  • Cysteamine(Mercaptoethyiamine, MEA), S,2-Aminoethylisothiouronium Bromide. HBr (AET), and S-(2-Aminoethyl) Dihydrogen Phosphorothioate (WR-638) were prepared and radioprotective effects of these chemicals and their combinations against $^{60}Co$ ${\gamma}-ray$ radiation were studied ,in irradiated ICR mice. Intraperitonially administered chemicals or their combinations resulted drug deaths in cases of MEA, AET, and their combinations, whereas there were a slight or no drug death in cases of WR-638 and the combination of AET with WR-638. All tested chemicals and their combinations yielded radioprotective effects against $^{60}Co$ $\gamma-ray$ radiation. An additive radioprotection effect was observed in case of the combination of AET with WR-638.

  • Neutron dose assessment in criticality accidents using Whole Body Counter (WBC) was proved to be an effective method as rapid neutron dose estimation at the JCO criticality accident in Tokai-mura. The 1.36MeV gamma-ray of $^{24}Na$ in a body can be detected easily by a germanium detector. The Minimum Detectable Activity (MDA) of $^{24}Na$ is approximately 50Bq for 10miniute measurement by the germanium-type whole body counter at JNC Tokai Works. Neutron energy spectra at the typical shielding conditions in criticality accidents were calculated and the conversion factor, whole body activity-to-organ mass weighted neutron absorbed dose, corresponding to each condition were determined. The conversion factor for uncollied fission spectrum is 7.7 $[(Bq^{24}Na/g^{23}Na)/mGy]$.

  • The influence of lead cations on natural quartz (QZ) from Egypt as a glass shielding material for the composition with nominal formula (10Na2O - (90 - x) QZ - xPbO (where x = 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 mol %)) was examined. The studied samples are synthesized via the melt quenching method at 1050 ℃. The X-ray diffraction XRD patterns were confirmed the glass nature for studied samples. Moreover, the optical properties, and the transparency for all compositions were examined by UV-Vis spectroscopy. Also, the major elemental composition of the natural quartz were estimated via the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) technique. Further, the density and molar volume were determined. Furthermore, the nuclear shielding parameters such as, mass attenuation coefficient, effective atomic number, electronic density, the total atomic, and electronic cross sections as well as the mean free path, and the half value layer with different gamma ray energies (81 keV-1407 keV) were calculated. Besides, the results showed that the shielding behavior towards the gamma ray radiation for all glass samples was increased as the increment in PbO concentration in the glass system.

  • In the present work, peak relative efficiency for the energy was obtained and response function was worked out. This study was carried out using the high resolution high efficiency HPGe detector(diameter 78.7 mm, length 86.5 mm) and NaI(Tl) detector for anti-compton. The anti-coincidence of the signals from the two detectors could be used to lessen the Compton effect signal; thus, the $\gamma$-ray energy resolution could be improved. The $\gamma$-ray spectrum was measured at $55^{\circ}$ to the direction of the incident proton beam. Reaction spectrum was obtained from the $^{23}Na$(p, $\gamma$)$^{24}Mg$ reaction at $E_p$ = 1424 keV and $^{27}Al$(p, $\gamma$)$^{28}Si$ reaction at $E_p$ = 992 keV. To accelerate the incident proton which creates the (p, $\gamma$) capture reaction, the 3 MeV Pelletron accelerator at the Tokyo Institute of Technology was used. Response function was worked out by a noble technique. We worked out a response function from 1.2 to 9.4 MeV at intervals of 0.75 MeV.

  • For the quantitative evaluation and assessment of radiation exposure from terrestrial component of natural environmental radiation, successive thermoluminescence dosimetry and periodical in-situ gamma ray spectrometry were carried out for a period of 24 months. LiF PTFE dise TLDs and $3&{\phi}{\times}3'$cylindrical NaI(Tl)scintill ation detector in association of portable multichannel analyzer (4096 ch) were used in this study. The doses measured were evaluated and assessed in terms of effective dose equivalent. As a concomitant output, the dose equivalent due to ionizing component of cosmic ray was able to be evaluated. According to the results obtained in terms of variance weighted mean, the annual effective dose equivalents of terrestrial gamma ray and cosmic ray ionizing component in Taejeon area came out to be $564{\pm}4\;{\mu}Sv(64.8{\pm}0.5nSv{\cdot}h^{-1}$ and $300{\pm}2\;{\mu}Sv(34.3{\pm}0.2nSv{\cdot}h^{-1}$, respectively, which are reasonable comparably with that appeared in UNSCEAR Report[28]as per caput annual effective dose equivalent in 'areas of normal background radiation'.

  • A distillation tower is one of the important facilities which separates and refines a crude oil stream according to certain boiling points. Its operation efficiency can affect the productivity of a refinery substantially. The objective of this study is to elucidate some operational information on the internal conditions of a distillation tower from a measurement of density profile by using a sealed gamma-ray source and a radiation detector. Gamma radiation counts were measured by a BGO detector positioned diametrically outside the tower-wall, opposite to the gamma source(Co-60) as the detector and the source were lowered concurrently. From the results, structural abnormality of the trays was not found inside the tower. Considering the flow distribution patterns, however, a vapor phase was dominantly formed at the upper part of the tower and a liquid phase at the lower part. From the gamma scanning of the distillation tower, it is anticipated that the gamma absorption technique can be used as an important tool for confirming the structural soundness of trays and investigating flow distribution in refinery facilities.

  • High density polyethylene (HDPE) is degraded due to a radiation-induced oxidation when it is used as a neutron moderator in a neutron counter for a nuclear material accounting of spent fuels. The HDPE exposed to the gamma-ray emitted from the fission products in a spent nuclear fuel results in a radiation-induced degradation which changes its original molecular structure to others. So a neutron moderating power variation of HDPE, irradiated by a gamma radiation, was investigated in this work. Five HDPE moderator structures were exposed to the gamma radiation emitted from a $^{60}Co$ source to a level of $10^5-10^9$ rad to compare their post-irradiation properties. As a result of the neutron measurement test with 5 irradiated HDPE structures and a neutron measuring system, it was confirmed that the neutron moderating power for the $10^5$ rad irradiated HDPE moderator revealed the largest decrease when the un-irradiated pure one was used as a reference. It implies that a neutron moderating power variation of HDPE is not directly proportional to the integrated gamma dose rate. To clarify the cause of these changes, some techniques such as a FTIR, an element analysis and a densitometry were employed. As a result of these analyses, it was confirmed that the molecular structure of the gamma irradiated HDPEs had partially changed to others, and the contents of hydrogen and oxygen had varied during the process of a radiation-induced degradation. The mechanism of these changes cannot be explained in detail at present, and thus need further study.

  • GESS-a computer code for simulation of energy spectra for gamma-ray in NaI(T1) scintillator has been developed. The Monte Carlo method was employed to simulate physical behaviours of particle transport in a medium. In the processes of simulation, all the interaction processes such as Rayleigh and Compton scattering, photoelectric effect and pair production were considered. The resulting electron slowing down spectrum was also considered with the CSDA model. For the purpose of verification of the code, a measurement gamma spectrum for incident gamma energy of 1.33 MeV was performed. The measured values appeared to be slightly higher than the theoretically calculated values.
