  • To enhance the strength and formability of MCFC matrixes, alumina/${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 fiber-reinforced ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 ma-trixes have been investigated. The MCFC matrixes with the thickness of 500~600 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were prepared by tape-casting of the slurry containing 10~30wt% fibers, followed by heat-treating up to $650^{\circ}C$. The porosity of fi-ber-reinforced matrixes decreased with the content of fibers, while the appropriate porosity(50~60%) for MCFC matrixes could be attained by adding larger ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 particles with the diameter of about 50${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ up to 50 wt%. The optimum length and content of the alumina fiber, both in the alignment of fibers and the enhancement of the strength, were found to be below 250${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 20 wt%, respectively. On the other hand, the strength(156 gf/$\textrm{mm}^2$) of the ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 matrix reinforced with ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 fibers prepared in this study was improved by 20~40% in comparison with the alumina-fiber-reinforced matrix. It was also found that the alu-mina-fiber-reinforced matrix was completely corroded in molten carbonates but the ${\gamma}$-LiAlO2 was not.

  • The composite mesoporous ceramic membranes were prepared with ${\gamma}$-alumina and poly (2, 6-dimethyl-l, 4-pyphenylene oxide) (PPO) on the surface of the macroporous $\alpha$-alumina ceramic membranes and the permeation results were compared with those of the $\alpha$-alumina membrane for large-scale applications. In the results of the transport experiments, the ceramic membranes gave high gas permeances mainly due to Knudsen diffusion and surface diffusion as an additional mechanism. And, the polymer modification increased the permeances of the strongly adsorbing gas components. In this study the modifications of alumina ceramic membranes could increase the gas permeation performances especially for the strongly absorbing gas components.

  • The molten carbonate fuel cell matrices, which are usually made of high surface, fine particle size ${\gamma}-LiAlO_2$ are reinforced with coarse particles of the same material and alumina fibers. An the effects of reinforcing materials on pore characteristics, sintering properties and mechanical properties of the matrices are examined.Among the matrices examined, the highest mechanical reinforcement has been achieved in the one containing 10 wt.% coarse particles and 20 wt.% alumina fibers.

  • The ultra fine gamma-alumina powder was prepared via ammonium aluminium carbonate hydroxide (AACH). The XRD, SEM, BET, thermal analysis were used to characterize the samples. The effects of various reaction parameters as concentration, of solution, anion on specific area, PH, aging time and thermal decomposition condition on the produced AACH and alumina were discussed.

  • Aluminum sulfate hydrate was prepared using sulfuric acid from Ha-dong kaolin. The effects of calcination-temperature and calcination-time of kaolin, reaction-temperature and reaction-time, and sulfuric acid concentration on the formation of aluminum sulfate hydrate were investigated. The precipitation condition of aluminum sulfate hydrate from sulfuric acid solution was determined. Also, the products heat-treated at different temperatures have been investigated by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetry, differential thermal analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy, particle size distribution analysis and chemical analysis. In the optimum condition, the conversion of aluminum oxide in kaolin to aluminum sulfate hydrate was 60%. From the results of XRD, TG-DTA, and FT-IR, it is suggested that the aluminum sulfate hydrate is thermally decomposed as follows ; $Al_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}18H_2O{\rightarrow}Al_2(SO_4)_3{\cdot}6H_2O{\rightarrow}Al_2(SO_4){\rightarrow}\;amorphous\;alumina{\rightarrow}{\gamma}-alumina{\rightarrow}{\delta}-alumina{\rightarrow}{\theta}-alumina{\rightarrow}{\alpha}-alumina$. The purity of alumina powder prepared by calcining aluminum sulfate hydrate at $1200^{\circ}C$ was 99.99 percent.

  • We prepared the cylindrical $\gamma-alumina$ pellets of 5 mm in diameter and 10 mm in average length using amorphous alumina and pore generating agent. The pellets were immersed in an aqueous solution of the mixture of $Fe(NO_{3})_{3}{\cdot}9H_{2}O$ and $CH_{3}COOH$. They were then hydrothermally treated at $200^{\circ}C$ for 3 h in autoclave, dried and calcined. For the application as an environmental catalyst, we investigated the decomposition characteristics of aniline and the initiation characteristics of $OH^{\cdot}$ conversion action in $O_{3}$ environment with or without the $Fe_{2}O_{3}$ supported y-alumina catalyst and $O_{3}$ molecule.

  • Amorphous alumina(AA) the precursor of ${\gamma}$-alumina for catalyst support was made in the newly designed ball filled heating column. Some properties of AA as precursor were investigated. In observation of microstruc-ture and pore structure of AA and its derivatives scanning electronic microscope(SEM) and transmission electronic microscope(TEM) were used. It was found that the width of one particle in AA was 45~60$\AA$ and the average distance among the particles ranged 9~12 $\AA$ which suggested a micropore structure. When AA was reacted with water the shape of the surface was found to be altered and acicular bioehmite was formed inside AA which contributed inproved formability. Pore distribution was evaluated for the three samples of AA ground and granulated lump and La2O3 coated alumina. Acid sites were quantitatively determined by ammonia TPD method and the effect of impurity of Na on acid sites was discussed. Water adsorption capacity was evaluated in terms of a desiccant.

  • $V_{0.9}Sb_{0.1}O_x$ systems, bulk and deposited on different supports (five types of $\gamma$-aluminas, $\alpha$-alumina, silica-alumina, silica gel, magnesium oxide), have been tested in the oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of iso-butane. Catalytic performance of VSb oxides has shown to be highly dependent on the support and the nature of the support decreasing in a series: $\gamma$-$Al_2O_3$ > $\alpha$-$Al_2O_3$ > Si-Al-O > $SiO_2$ $\approx$ MgO $\gg$ unsupported. Variation of the V-Sb-O-loading in the studied range of coverage (0.5-2 theoretical monolayer) only slightly influences the catalysts' activity and selectivity. The best catalytic performance of $\gamma$-alumina-supported $V_{0.9}Sb_{0.1}O_x$ systems can be explained by the optimal surface interaction between support and supported components resulting in the formation of well-spread amorphous active $VO_x$-component with vanadium in a high oxidation state.
