  • The decomposition of 50 pesticides present in an aqueous solution using ${\gamma}-irradiation$ from a $^{60}Co$ gamma-ray source was investigated using laboratory-scale experiment. The rates of decomposition were determined using a gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD), high-performance liquid chromatography-photo diode array detector (HPLC-PDA), and HPLC-fluorescence detector (FLD). When the initial concentration of pesticides was 10 ppm, and the radiation dose was 2, 5, 10, 20, and 30 kGy, respectively, 14 pesticide samples showed high removal rates (>50%) at absorbed doses of more than 10 kGy. With the exception of procymidone, they were all completely removed at a 30 kGy irradiation dose. These results provide fundamental data on the reactivity between gamma-irradiation and pesticides in an aqueous solution. Further, an evaluation of the toxicity of radiolytic intermediate products is required.

  • Kenaf fibers have excellent properties and possess the potential to be outstanding reinforcing fillers in cement. The grafting of poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate (PEGMA) to the kenaf fibers is important in improving the compatibility between the fibers and the cement. PEGMA was grafted onto kenaf fibers using gamma-ray radiation. The radiation dose ranged from 20 to 60 kGy, and the dose rate was $10kGy\;h^{-1}$. The degree of grafting increased with increased radiation doses. FT-IR analysis revealed an increase in PEGMA content after gamma-ray radiation induced grafting, further evincing the attachment of PEGMA to the kenaf fibers. The mechanical properties of the gamma-ray grafted kenaf fiber/cement composites were superior to those of the ungrafted kenaf fiber/cement specimens.

  • The aim of this work was to develop the gamma camera system for small animal gamma imaging and environmental radiation monitoring imaging using a parallel hole collimator and pinhole collimator. The small gamma camera system consists of a CsI(Tl) scintillation crystal with 6 mm in thickness and $50{\times}50mm$ in area coupled with a Hamamatsu H8500C PSPMT, are resistive charge divider, pre-amplifiers, charge amplifiers, nuclear instrument modules (NIMs), an analog to digital converter and a computer for control and display. We have developed a radiation monitoring system composed of a combined pinhole gamma camera and a charge-coupled devices (CCD) camera. The results demonstrated that the parallel hole collimator and pinhole collimator gamma camera designed in this study could be utilized to perform small animal imaging and environmental radiation monitoring system. Consequently in this paper, we proved that our gamma detector system is reliable for a gamma camera which can be used as small animal imaging and environmental radiation monitoring system.

  • PVA nanofibers containing silver nanoparticles were prepared by two methods. The first method was electrospinning of irradiated solution. The prepared $PVA/AgNO_3$ solution was irradiated by gamma-rays. And then the irradiated solution was electrospun. The second method was irradiation of electrospun nanofibers. Nanofibers prepared by electrospinning of unirradiated $PVA/AgNO_3$ solution. The morphology of the nanofibers was observed with a SEM, TEM. When the irradiated $PVA/AgNO_3$ solution were electrospun, the average size of the Ag nanoparticles was increased, but their number was decreased.

  • In order to predict the lifetime of InP Heterojunction Bipolar Transistor (HBT) devices and related circuits in the space radiation environment, a novel model including gamma radiation effects is proposed in this paper. Based on the analysis of radiation-induced device degradation effects including both DC and AC characteristics, a set of empirical expressions describing the device degradation trend are presented and incorporated into the Keysight model. To validate the effective of the proposed model, a series of radiation experiments are performed. The correctness of the novel model is validated by comparing experimental and simulated results before and after radiation.

  • Effects of gamma ionizing radiation on recombinant Escherichia coli cells containing stress promoters, recA, fabA, grpE, or katG, fused to luxCDABE originated from Vibrio fischeri were characterized by monitoring transcriptional responses reflected by bioluminescent output. Quantification of gamma-ray intensity may be possible using the recA and fabA promoter fusion since a linear enhancement of bioluminescence emission with increasing gamma-ray intensity was observed. Other strains sensitive to either oxidative stress (DPD2511, katG::luxCDABE) or protein-damaging stress (TV1061, grpE::luxCDABE) were also irradiated by gamma-rays, and resulted in no noticeable bioluminescent output while DPD2794 with recA promoter and DPD2540 with fabA promoter irradiated by the same intensities of gamma-rays gave a significant bioluminescent output. This indicates that the main stresses in the recombinant bacteria caused by ionizing radiation are DNA and membrane-damage, not protein- or oxidative-damage. In addition, in this study, to investigate the relationship between the radiation dose rate and bacterial responses, two recombinant Escherichia coli strains, DPD2794 and GC2, containing lac promoter fused to luxCDABE originating from Photorhapdus luminescences, were used for detecting DNA damage and cellular toxicity under various radiation dose rates. Throughout this study, it was found that these bacteria showed quantitative stress responses to DNA damage and general toxicity caused by gamma rays, depending on the radiation dose rates, indicating that the bacterial stress responses and general toxicity were seriously influenced according to radiation dose rates.

  • The stereo radiation detection system detects the gamma source and acquires two dimensional left and right images for gamma source and visible objects using the detection result. And then the system measures the distance to the radiation source from the system in 3D space using stereo vision algorithm. In this paper, we implemented the fast detection algorithm for gamma source from the system in 3D space to reduce the detection time with image processing algorithms. Additionally, the system's performance is verified through experiments on gamma irradiation facilities. As a result, if the fast detection algorithm applied to the system, we can confirm that the detection system represents a 35% better performance than the conventional detection method that is full scanning to acquire the stereo image. We also have visualized a gamma source distribution through a 3D monitor using the stereo vision algorithm in order to provide the information of radiation spatial distribution to the user efficiently.

  • The detection properties of gamma-irradiated (0~10 kGy) dried seaweed, dried shrimp, and seasoned dried filefish were investigated by photo-stimulated luminescence (PSL) and electron spin resonance (ESR). PSL could be used as a detection method on irradiated dried seaweed and dried shrimp as they showed photon counts greater than 5,000 counts/60 s (positive) in the irradiated samples with doses above l kGy. However, PSL could not be applied to detect irradiated seasoned dried filefish, because gamma-irradiated sample at 10 kGy even yielded photon counts less than 700 counts/60 s (negative). The ESR spectroscopy for only dried shrimp revealed specific signals derived from free radicals captured in the shell of shrimp. As a result, it is considered that PSL or ESR methods for detection of gamma-irradiated dried shrimp and only PSL can be used to detect gamma-irradiated seaweed. Furthermore, it is considered that hydrocarbon analysis of seasoned dried filefish containing fat by GC/MS and Thermo Luminance (TL) analysis of dried seaweed should be studied for detection of irradiation.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of gamma radiation on cell wall degradation, cellulose crystallinity, and flexural strength of Pinus densiflrora, Zelkova serrenata, and Paulownia tomentosa. By the gamma radiation at the dose up to 100 kGy, the cell wall degradation was not detected with scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation from all samples, and the flexural strength was not significantly changed. Cellulose crystallinity was neither changed by the gamma radiation. This high stability of wood against gamma radiation means that the radiation technology can be used for eradicating fungal and insect infestation of wood without the changes in wood properties.

  • Mistletoe (Viscum album) has been widely used as a functional food material for various therapeutic purposes from ancient time. In this study, we examined anti-diabetic and cytotoxic activities of heated-treated mistletoe and the effects of gamma-irradiation on its activities. Heat-treated mistletoe extract was prepared by heating during different time (3, 6, 9 and 12 h) and gamma-irradiated with different doses of 0, 10, 30, 50, 70 and 100 kGy. Heat-treated mistletoe extracts showed a concentration-dependent cytotoxicity on rat insulinoma RINm5F cells and the effect was gradually decreased as heating time increased up to 12 h. 12 h heat-treated extract was no cytotoxic. Gamma-irradiation enhanced the reduction of heat-treated mistletoe-induced cytotoxicity and the decreasing effect was an irradiating dose-dependent. In particular, all of 70 kGy irradiated and heat-treated mistletoe extracts did not showed the cytotoxicity and the effect was comparable to 12 h heat-treated mistletoe extract. Among those extracts, 3 h heat-treated mistletoe extract gradually increased the insulin secreting activity by gamma-irradiation and the effect was the best at 70 kGy, whereas 12 heat-treated extract was no effect. On the test of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase inhibitory activity, 3 h heat-treated mistletoe extract showed the concentration dependent effects and gamma-irradiation induced more activity at 70 kGy, compared to non-irradiated 3 h and 12 h heated mistletoe extracts. These results suggest that the combination of heat treatment and gamma-irradiation might be more effective than only heat-treatment for improving the anti-diabetic activity of mistletoe extract and reducing its cytotoxicity.
