  • To search for antioxidative compounds from plant resources, methanol extracts of 45 plant species were investigated using DPPH method. The highest activity was shown in the methanol extract of Acer ginnala($RC_{50}\;:\;15{\mu}g$), followed by Stewartia koreana($RC_{50}\;:\;28{\mu}g$) and Carpinus laxiflora($RC_{50}\;:\;33{\mu}g$). Two antioxidative compounds were isolated from the methanolic extract of Acer ginnala Max and identified as acertannin(2, 6-di-O-galloyl-1, 5-anhydro-D-glucitol) and gallicin (methyl-3, 4, 5-trihydroxybenzoic acid) on the basis of mass spectroscopy, $^1H-\;and\;^{13}C-NMR$ data. The DPPH free radical scavenging activities of acertannin($RC_{50}\;:\;3.5{\mu}g$) and gallicin($RC_{50}\;:\;2.8{\mu}g$) were more effective than those of BHA($RC_{50}\;:\;14{\mu}g$) and ${\alpha}-tocopherol$ ($RC_{50}\;:\;12{\mu}g$).

  • Ten compounds, (+)-pinoresinol (1), (-)-balanophonin (2), gallicin (3), vanillin (4), 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (5), coniferaldehyde (6), betulinic acid (7), ursolic acid (8), 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (9), and malic acid (10), were isolated from a EtOAc-soluble fraction of the seeds of Cornus officinalis. The structures of these compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic methods as well as by comparison with reported values. Compounds 1, 2, and 4-7 were isolated from this species for the first time. All the isolates (1-10) were subjected to an in vitro bioassay to evaluate their inhibitory activity against advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation. Among these, compounds 2 and 3 showed the significant inhibitory activity on AGEs formation with $IC_{50}$ values of 27.81 and 18.04${\mu}M$, respectively.

  • Studies on the pharmaco-constituents from the leaves of Cercts chinensis which have been used for the treatment of inflammation, contusion, dilated blood, pain of heart and stomach, edema, etc. in Korean folk remedies were carried out. Dried leaves of the plant were extracted with MeOH. The MeOH extract was suspended in distilled water and subsequently fractionated with $Et_{2}O$ and n-BuOH. From the $Et_{2}O$ and n-BuOH fractions, six phenolic compounds were isolated and identified as myricitrin($C_{21}H_{20}O_{12}, {\;}m.p.{\;}199~200^{\circ}$. $4myricetin-3-O-{\alpha}-L-rhamnopyranoside$), kaempferol($C_{15}H_{10}O_{6}, {\;}m.p. 276^{\circ}$), quercetin($C_{15}Ha_{10}O_{7}, {\;}m.p.{\;}313~314^{\circ}$), quercitrin ($C_{21}H_{20}O_{12}, {\;}m.p.{\;}176~178^{\circ}, {\;}quercetin-3-O-{\alpha}-L-rhamnopyranoside$), gallicin ($C_{8}H_{8}O_{5}, {\;}m.p.{\;}202~203^{\circ}$. methyl gallate), gallic acid ($C_{7}H_{6}O_{5}, {\;}m.p.{\;}260~265^{\circ}) through their physico-chemical data and UV, IR, EI-MS, $^{13}C-NMR$, and $^{1}H-NMR$ analysis with authentics.
