We investigate the properties of bright galaxies with various morphological types in Abell 1139 and Abell 2589, using the pixel color-magnitude diagram (pCMD) analysis. The 32 bright member galaxies ($Mr{\leq}-21.3mag$) are deeply imaged in the g and r bands in our CFHT/MegaCam observations, as a part of the KASI-Yonsei Deep Imaging Survey of Clusters (KYDISC). We examine how the features of their pCMDs depend on galaxy morphology and infrared color. We find that the g - r color dispersion as a function of surface brightness (${\mu}r$) shows better performance in distinguishing galaxy morphology, than the mean g - r color does. The best set of parameters for galaxy classification appears to be a combination of the minimum color dispersion at ${\mu}r{\leq}21.2mag\;arcsec-2$ and the maximum color dispersion at $20.0{\leq}{\mu}r{\leq}21.0mag\;arcsec-2$: the latter reflects the complexity of stellar populations at the disk component in a typical spiral galaxy. Moreover, the color dispersion of an elliptical galaxy appears to be correlated with its WISE infrared color ([4.6]-[12]). This indicates that the complexity of stellar populations in an elliptical galaxy is related to its recent star formation activities. From this observational evidence, we infer that gas-rich minor mergers or gas interactions may have usually occurred during the recent growth of massive elliptical galaxies.
Luminosity profile of the late type spiral galaxy NGC 2403 was obtained using the PDS scan of the plate. Some physical parameters (scale length, total magnitude, central brightness, disk to bulge ratio and concentric indices) were calculated from the brightness distribution. Total mass and the mass to luminosity ratio were estimated from the fitting of various mass models.
We performed VRI CCD surface photometry of three spiral galaxies of HCG10 in order to understand the effect of interactions in the compact group. The morphology of the largest member NGC 536 seems to be normal but its bulge is thought to be of an oblate spheroid. The central surface brightness of the disk of NGC 536 is much fainter than that of disks of nearby spiral galaxies. The morphologies of NGC 531 and NGG 542 appear to be affected by interactions which lead to a warped disk in NGC 531 and a slightly bent disk in NGC 542. NGC 531 have a boxy bulge and a Freeman Type II disk both of which strongly suggest the presence of a bar in the galaxy. There is a break in the slope of the luminosity profile of NGC 542 which is dominated by the disk component.

We present an analysis of the chemical abundances and kinematics of six low-mass dwarf stars, previously claimed to be candidate hypervelocity stars (HVSs). We obtained moderate-resolution (R ~ 6000) spectra of these stars to estimate the abundances of several chemical elements (Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, and Ni), and derived their space velocities and orbital parameters using proper motions from the Gaia Data Release 2. All six stars are shown to be bound to the Milky Way, and in fact are not even considered high-velocity stars with respect to the Galactic rest frame. Nevertheless, we attempt to characterize their parent Galactic stellar components by simultaneously comparing their element abundance patterns and orbital parameters with those expected from various Galactic stellar components. We find that two of our program stars are typical disk stars. For four stars, even though their kinematic probabilistic membership assignment suggests membership in the Galactic disk, based on their distinct orbital properties and chemical characteristics, we cannot rule out exotic origins as follows. Two stars may be runaway stars from the Galactic disk. One star has possibly been accreted from a disrupted dwarf galaxy or dynamically heated from a birthplace in the Galactic bulge. The last object may be either a runaway disk star or has been dynamically heated. Spectroscopic follow-up observations with higher resolution for these curious objects will provide a better understanding of their origin.

The gas response to a proposed spiral stellar pattern for our Galaxy is presented here as calculated via 2D hydrodynamic calculations utilizing the ZEUS code in the disk plane. The locus is that found by Drimmel (2000) from emission profiles in the K band and at 240 ${\mu}m$. The self-consistency of the stellar spiral pattern was studied in previous work (see Martos et al. 2004). It is a sensitive function of the pattern rotation speed, $\Omega$p, among other parameters which include the mass in the spiral and its pitch angle. Here we further discuss the complex gaseous response found there for plausible values of $\Omega$p in our Galaxy, and argue that its value must be close to $20 km s^{-l}\;kpc^{-1}$ from the strong self-consistency criterion and other recent, independent studies which depend on such parameter. However, other values of $\Omega$p that have been used in the literature are explored to study the gas response to the stellar (K band) 2-armed pattern. For our best fit values, the gaseous response to the 2-armed pattern displayed in the K band is a four-armed pattern with complex features in the interarm regions. This response resembles the optical arms observed in the Milky Way and other galaxies with the smooth underlying two-armed pattern of the old stellar disk populations in our interpretation. The complex gaseous response appears to be related to resonances in stellar orbits. Among them, the 4:1 resonance is paramount for the axisymmetric Galactic model employed, and the set of parameters explored. In the regime seemingly proper to our Galaxy, the spiral forcing appears to be marginally strong in the sense that the 4:1 resonance terminates the stellar pattern, despite its relatively low amplitude. In current work underway, the response for low values of $\Omega$p tends to remove most of the rich structure found for the optimal self-consistent model and the gaseous pattern is ring-like. For higher values than the optimal, more features and a multi-arm structure appears.
From the PDS scanning, isophote maps and surface luminosity distributions for the late type spiral galaxy NGC 6946 were obtained. Surface luminosity distribution showed that this galaxy can be classified as the Freeman's type II, and the deep spheroidal component was caused as a result of the ring structure in the central part of NGC 6946. Physical parameters-total magnitude ($M_T^B$), effective radius ($R_e^*$), central surface magnitude $U(0)_{CD}$, length scale (${\alpha}^{-1}$), disk-to-bulge ratio (D/B) and mass-to-luminosity ratio (M/L)-were also calculated, and the results show that NGC 6946 belongs to Sc I type galaxy according to the DDO classification, and is to be a fair sample of classification statge T=6.
We present a study of the old open cluster Trumpler 5 (Tr 5), based on the CDS archival data. From the color-magnitude diagrams of Tr 5, we have found the positions of main-sequence turn-off (MSTO) and red giant clump (RGC) stars. Using the mean magnitude of the RGC stars, we have estimated the reddening toward Tr 5, E(B - V) = 0.60 $\pm$ 0.10. Using the stars common in two data sets and the theoretical isochrones of Padova group, we have estimated the distance modulus $V_o - M_v = 12.64 {\pm} 0.20 (d = 3.4 {\pm} 0.3 kpc)$, the metallicity [Fe/H) = -0.30 $\pm$ 0.10, and the age of 2.4 $\pm$ 0.2 Gyr (log t = 9.38). These metallicity and distance values are consistent with the relation between the metallicity and the Galactocentric distance of other old open clusters, for which we obtain the slope of ${\Delta}[Fe/H]/ R_{gc} = -0.064 {\pm} 0.010\;dex\;kpc^{-1}$.
Which mechanism governs star-formation activity in galaxies is still one of the most important, open questions in galactic astronomy. To address this issue, we investigate the specific star formation rate (sSFR) of late-type galaxies as functions of various structural parameters including the morphology, mass, radius, and mass compactness (MC). We use a sample of ~200,000 late-type galaxies with z = 0.02 ~ 0.2 from SDSS DR7 and a catalog of bulge-disk decomposition (Simard et al. 2011; Mendel et al. 2013). We find a remarkably strong correlation between bulge's MC and galaxy's sSFR, in the sense that galaxies with more compact bulge tend to be of lower sSFR. This seems counter-intuitive given that galactic sSFR is driven predominantly by disks rather than bulges and suggests that the central mass density plays a key role in recent star-forming activity. We discuss the physical cause of the new findings in terms of the bulge growth history and AGN activities.
In this paper, the numerical results concerning different orbits of a 3D axisymmetric non-rotating galactic potential are presented. We use $Paczy{\acute{n}}ski^{\prime}s$ gravitational potential with different birth velocity distributions for the isolated old Neutron Star (NS) population. We note some smooth non-constant segments corresponding to regular orbits as well as the characterization of their chaoticity. This is strongly related to the effect of different kick velocities due to supernovae mass-loss and natal kicks to the newly-formed NS. We further confirm that the dynamical motion of the isolated old NSs in the gravitational field becomes obvious, with some significant diffraction in the symmetry of their orbital characteristics.
