  • Three cheilostomatous bryozoan species collected from Gageodo Island of Korea in 1999, which are Chorizopora brongniartii (Audouin, 1826), Microporella marsupiata (Busk, 1860) and Celleporina costazii (Audouin, 1826), are newly added to the Korean fauna. The redescriptions of three species are provided with distributional data and detailed illustrations herein. As a result of this study, a total of 32 bryozoan species from Gageodo Island waters are now reported.

  • We surveyed moths on Gageodo island in the southwestern sea of the Korean Peninsula over three years (2009, 2012, 2013) and found a total of 253 species in 18 families. Geometridae had the greatest species richness, with 63 species, followed by Noctuidae, Erebidae, Crambidae and Sphingidae. The annual changes in species richness and abundance were not different and seasonal occurrence of species showed a unimodal pattern in which the numbers of species and individuals increased from April and May, peaked in June and decreased to September and October. Seven moth species (Pyralidae: Herculia drabicilialis Yamanaka, Didia striatella (Inoue); Crambidae: Clupeosoma pryeri (Butler), Demobotys pervulgalis (Hampson), Yezobotys dissimilis (Yamanaka), Syllepte cissalis Yamanaka; Erebidae: Hypena sinuosa (Wileman)) are reported for the first time in Korea.

  • A taxonomic study on marine sponges was conducted with materials collected from Gageodo Island, Korea, from August 1999 to July 2001 by SCUBA diving. Among them, Phorbas gukhulensis n. sp. is new to science. Phorbas gukhulensis n. sp. is similar to P. fitictius Pulitzer-Finali from which it differs in spicule size and growth form.

  • A new species of the genus Smenospongia (Dictyoceratida, Thorectidae), S. coreana n. sp., is described from Gageodo Island, Korea. This new species is readily distinguished from the other species of Smenospongia by the un-lobated growth forms and un-crowded primary fibres. S. aurea and S. lamellata are no distinction between primary and secondary elements, but this species is easily distinguished from them. The matrix easily derived from the fibres. This species has five sesterterpenes, three scalaranetypes and two linear furanosesterterpenes, in chemical compounds.

  • A taxonomic study on marine sponges was conducted by SCUBA diving at Gageodo Island, Korea from August 1999 to July 2001. Among them, Haliclona (Gellius) coreana n. sp. turned out to be new to science. This new species seems to be close to H. (G.) arcoferus Vosmaer, 1885, based on the type of spicules. However, it is different in size of toxa and growth form. Toxa of the new species is half in length compared to H. (G.) arcoferus. The growth form is jar shaped in this new species, but flat in H. (G.) arcoferus.

  • Two new species belonging to genus Mycale are described from the waters around Geojedo Island and Gageodo Island, Korea. Mycale (M.) geojensis n. sp. seems close to M. (M.) adhaerens parvasigma Hoshino, 1981, but our new species has three categories of anisochelae. M. (Aegogropila) hentscheli n. sp. is closest to M. (A.) obscura (Carter, 1882) in shape and spicule, but has no large sigma.

  • New Korean lumbricids are described: Eisenia gaga Blakemore sp. nov. from remote Gageodo Island and E. sindo Blakemore, sp. nov. from an island at Incheon. Both are comparable to Eisenia koreana (Zicsi, 1972) from near Pyongyang, North Korea. A remarkable yet previously unrecognized similarity to American earthworm Eisenoides carolinensis (Michaelsen, 1910) is discussed, but synonymy is rejected on tenuous morphological grounds (form of nephridial vesicle bladders) with taxonomy supported by objective molecular data (mtDNA cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 barcodes).

  • Two new species of the genus Psammocinia (Dictyoceratida, Irciniidae), P. lobatus and P. rubra, are described from Gageodo Island (Sohuksando Island)and Jejudo Island, Korea. Psammocinia lobatus is most closely related to P. wandoensis Sim and Lee in growth form. However, it can be distinguished by its sharp conules and primary and secondary fibres, lightly cored with detritus. Psammocinia rubra is readily distinguished from the other described Psammocinia species by the blunt conules, reddish brown color of specimen, brown color of fibres and filaments, secondary web between adjacent primary fibres and filament coated with brown granules.
