This study was conducted to clarify the relationship between bird community and forest structure from early May to mid June, 1988 in two sites which had different forest structures due to silvicultural practice, located in the Tomakomai Experimental Forest of Hokkaido University, Hokkaido, Japan. Quantitative ahbitat analysis was applied to elucidate difference between the two study sites, and territory mapping method and guild analysis were used for assessment of the bird community. Dominant tree species were Quercus mongolica, Magnolia obovata, Prunus sargentii, Acer mono and Tilia japonica. Unithinned site had more foliage coverage in upper and middle layers, but in lower layer had less coverage than thinned site. Thirty four species of birds were recorded and of them only 21 species occupied territories within the study area. Dominant species were Ficedula narcissina, Phylloscopus occipitalis, Parus major, Passer rutilans, Sitta europaea and Parus palustris in the study area. The unmber of breeding species of the two sites were equal, but the species composition of breeding bird communities was different between the sites. The number of species and pairs on hole-nesting guild were greater in the unthinned site, but those on ground-nesting guild were greater in the thinned site. Canopy-nesting guild showed no significant difference between the two sites. Silvicultural practice such as proper thinning appeared to be not inadequate to all of the forest birds, probably good to bush and ground nesting guild, and to tree & bush and ground foraging guild. The silvicultural practice also did not considerably affect the hole and canopy-nesting guild.
This study was conducted to clarified the relationship between bird community and forest structure and present the counterplan for protection and management of bird community from February 1993 to July 1995 at deciduous and coniferous forest within Mt. Nam area, Seoul, Korea. DBH distribution has not significant differences in each study site. Deciduous forest had more foliage coverage in all layers than coniferous forest. Total 41 species of birds, which were 16 species of resident, 14 species of summer visitor, 4 species of winter visitor, and 7 species of passage migrant were recrded in two study sites. Leaf use rate of birds was increased the increase of coverage. The number of breeding species and pairs, breeding density, and diversity index were greater in deciduous forest than coniferous forest. The number of species and pairs on bush-nesting and foraging guild were greater than other guilds. And the nuber of species and pairs on hole nesting guild were the fewest in nesting guild. Use rate of artificial nests for improvement of habitat quality was greater in coniferous forest than deciduous forest. Maintenance of bush layer, increase of coverage and leaf layer diversity, supply of artificial nests, management of large trees, and control of natural enemy were necessary for protection and management of bird community in Mt. nam area.

Depending on the mode of nutrition exploitation, major fungal guilds are distinguished as ectomycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi. It is generally known that diverse environmental factors influence fungal communities; however, it is unclear how fungal communities respond differently to environment factors depend on fungal guilds. In this study, we investigated basidiomycetes communities associated with Quercus mongolica using 454 pyrosequencing. We attempted to detect guild pattern (ectomycorrhizal or saprotrophic fungal communities) by comparing the influence of geography and source (root and surrounding soil). A total of 515 mOTUs were detected from root (321) and soil (394) of Q. mongolica at three sites of Mt. Jeombong in Inje County. We found that patterns of diversity and community structure were different depending on the guilds. In terms of alpha diversity, only ectomycorrhizal fungi showed significant differences between sources. In terms of community structure, however, geography significantly influenced the ectomycorrhizal community, while source appeared to have a greater influence on the saprotrophic community. Therefore, a guildbased view will help to elucidates novel features of the relationship between environmental factors and fungal communities.
Two distinct spider communities were studied in the crowns and ground surfaces of pine plantations at Mt. Ungilsan, Kyonggi-do using pitfall traps and knock-down by spraying of an insecticide (D.D.V.P.) to sample spiders. There were 34 species of 11 families in the ground community and 41 species of 15 families in the crown community, with only 9 species being collected in both. Wandering spiders comprised 78.5% of the crown community and 90.8% of the ground community. Guild abundance and the most abundant families were distinctly different in the two habitats: agile hunters (Salticidae:32.4%) and nocturnal hunters (Clubionidae:19%) in the crown, runners (Lycocidae:32.8%) and nocturnal hunters (Gnaphosidae:31.2%) in the ground. Dominant species were Clubiona jucunda (Karsch) and Mymarachne japonica (Karsch) in the crown, while in the ground they were Pardosa laura Karsch and Gnaphosa silvicola. Species diversity(H ) had peaks in May, July and November in the ground community, while in the crown community peaks were in June and September. The seasonal trends of species diversity (H ) were due mainly to differences in the number of species and the numbers of individuals collected at each sample date rather than to differences in equitability among species. Spier guilds and dominant species have different seasonal patterns based on the temporal differences in prey availability in the two communities and the reduction of temporal overlap.

The purpose of this study is to provide basic data and evidence for the habitat improvement of wild birds in urban stream by analyzing changes in habitat characteristics of wild birds by riparian forest construction in Yangjae stream in Seoul. In Gangnam-gu, the multi layered riparian forest consisting of landscape trees and shrubs was formed on the slope. In Seocho-gu, the vertical vegetation structure of woody and herbaceous wetland plants was good. In Gangnam-gu, the vegetation area of the slope increased and the vertical stratification structure affected the species diversity of the forest birds. The number of species and individuals of plovers, sandpipers and wagtails decreased due to the impact of bicycle roads and trails. The poor forests on the levee slope in Seocho-gu affected the habitat selection and migration of the forest birds. The willows and amur silver-grasses formed in the riverside have been developed into the riparian forest, thus stabilizing the habitat of water birds by blocking disturbances from the influence of the trails.
This study was conducted to clarify the influence of national road construction on breeding bird community from April to June 2002 in 8 fragmented forest areas of Baekdudaegan mountain ranges, Korea. There were more observed birds in 50∼100m areas than in 50m areas from road. Guild structures were different between both areas. Number of species and individuals belong to hole nesting and canopy foraging guilds were lower in 50m areas than in 50∼100m areas from roads. Habitat structure of breeding bird community would be changed by road construction.
This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of habitat structure and bird communities between natural deciduous forest and around the road from October 2005 to August 2006 in the National Arboretum, Gwangneung, Korea. There were more larger trees and higher coverage of crown canopy in the natural deciduous forest than around the road. A total thirty seven species of birds were observed in the natural deciduous forest and twenty species were around road. The observed number of bird species and individuals, and bird species diversity index (H') were higher in the natural deciduous forest in each season. Foraging and nesting guild structures were also different. The differences of characteristics of bird communities would be related with habitat structure between both study areas.
We studied the forest environment and characteristics of bird community between April and September of 2010 on the Hyangjeokbong area(A), Baekryunsa area(B) and Anseong area(C), all in the Deogyusan National Park. Hyangjeokbong area of the high latitude ridge was characterized by the Taxus cuspidata and Abies koreana etc., and deciduous broadleaf forest species, such as the Quercus mongolica, with abundance of subalpine zone coniferous trees, the Hemerocallis fulva and the Rhododendron schlippenbachii, while the areas Baekryunsa and Anseong were primarily characterized by deciduous broadleaf forests, with the valleys showing Fraxinus mandshurica colonies. In terms of the DBH(diameter at breast height) of trees, between 11 and 20cm showed the highest frequencies, while over 30cm was the highest in Baekryunsa area and the lowest in Hyangjeokbong area. Furthermore, in terms of coverage in relation to layers, in Hyangjeokbong area, the coverage volume of the lower layer was very high, in Baekryunsa area, the coverage volume of the middle layer between 8 and 12m was the highest, and in Anseong area, the coverage volume of the upper layer over 18m was the highest. A total of 53 bird species were observed during the study period at the Deogyusan National Park. The numbers of species and density of areas were 25 species and 45.20 Ind./km for Hyangjeokbong area, 50 species and 58.63 Ind./km for Baekryunsa area and 35 species and 66.89 Ind./km for Anseong area, with Baekryunsa area showing the highest number of species and Anseong area showing the highest level of density. In terms of dominant species, in Hyangjeokbong area, Cettia diphone, along with species which inhabit in grassland and shrubs, were the dominant species, and species which live in the canopy layer, including the Aegithalos caudatus, were found to be dominant in Baekryunsa and Anseong areas. For guild structure, bush nesting guild and bush foraging guild species were the highest in all areas, and the hole nesting guild and the air foraging guild species showed the lowest proportion. This seems to be the result of the low number of trees with diameter at breast height of over 30cm, which results in the lack of nesting grounds for hole nesting guild species.
This study was conducted to clarify the differences in bird communities in breeding season between coniferous forests of Mt. Namsan and Gwangneung areas from April to August 2006. We chose a study site of 10ha in size for territory mapping of breeding bird community in each area. There were significant difference in DBH distribution of trees and average foliage profiles between both study areas. Number of breeding species and pairs, breeding density, and bird species diversity were higher in Gwangneung area than in Mt. Namsan area. Number of bird species and breeding pairs belonged to hole and canopy guild were different between both study areas. The difference in breeding bird communities between both study areas may be related with forest structure. For the protection and management of birds, greater structural complexity would be needed in Mt. Namsan area.
