Ground source heat pump (GSHP) or geothermal heat pump systems (GHPs) are recognized to be outstanding heating and cooling systems. Most of GSHP systems installed and studied in korea are vertical GSHP systems. A horizontal GSHP system was installed in greenhouse and investigated for the performance characteristics. The results of the study showed that the heating coefficient of performance of the heat pump was 3.64 and the overall heating coefficient of performance of the system was 3.31. The pumping power was obtained as 28.0 W/kW and the required ground heat exchanger length was 53.3 m/kW of rejection heat of condenser. The heat extraction rate was, on average, 14.58 W/m of ground heat exchanger length and trench length is 27.7 m/kW of rejection heat of condenser.

This paper provides an economic analysis of a new geothermal heat pump system that reuses condenser waste heat from a Ground Source Heat Pump ($GSHP_{ch}$) to provide energy for a hot water Ground Source heat pump ($GSHP_{hw}$). After conducting feasibility tests using GLD and TRNSYS simulations, the proposed system was effectively installed and thoroughly tested. We observe that 1) the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of the $GSHP_{hw}$ and the $GSHP_{ch}$ during cooling mode improves by up to 62% and 7%, respectively; 2) the number of bore holes can be reduced by two; and 3) the hot water supply temperature of the $GSHP_{hw}$ increases by up to $60^{\circ}C$. We further conclude that 1) the reduction of two bore holes can save approximately ten million Won from the initial cost investment; and 2) the increased COP of the $GSHP_{hw}$ can save approximately one million Won in annual electricity costs.

Ground-source heat pump (GSHP) systems have become an efficient alternative to conventional cooling and heating methods due to their higher energy efficiency. These systems use the ground as a heat source and the heat sink for cooling mode operation. The purpose of this simulation study is to evaluate the performance of a hypothetical GSHP system in an office building and to assess the energy saving effect against the existing HVAC systems (boiler and turbo chiller). We collected monthly energy consumption data from an actual office building ($32,488m^2$) in Seoul, and created a model to calculate the hourly building loads with EnergyPlus. In addition, we used GLD (Ground Loop Design) V8.0, a GSHP system design and simulation software tool, to evaluate hourly and monthly performance of the GSHP system. The energy consumption for the GSHP system based on the hourly simulation results were estimated to be 582.6 MWh/year for cooling and 593.2 MWh/year for heating, while those for the existing HVAC systems were found to be 674.5 MWh/year and 2,496.4 MWh/year, respectively. The seasonal performance factor (SPF) of the GSHP system was also calculated to be in the range of 3.37~4.28.

This paper compares the annual energy performance of four different types of air-conditioning systems in a medium-sized office building. Chiller and boiler, air-cooled VRF, ground-source VRF, and ground-source heat pump systems were selected as the systems to be compared. Specifically, the energy performance of the GSHP system and the ground-source VRF system were compared with each other and also with conventional HVAC systems including the chiller and boiler system and air-cooled VRF system. In order to evaluate and compare the energy performances of four systems for the office building, EnergyPlus, a whole-building energy simulation program, was used. The EnergyPlus simulation results show that both the GSHP and the ground-source VRF systems not only save more energy than the other two systems but also significantly reduce the electric peak demand. These make the GSHP and the VRF systems more desirable energy-efficient HVAC technologies for the utility companies and their clients. It is necessary to analyze the impact of partial load performance of ground-source heat pump and ground-source VRF on the long-term (more than 20 years) performance of ground heat exchangers and entire systems.

The objective of this study is to improve the performance of a hybrid ground source heat pump (HGSHP) by optimizing the flow distribution ratio of secondary fluid flow rate between a ground loop and a supplemental loop. Initially, a conventional ground source heat pump (GSHP) was tested to determine an optimum flow rate of the secondary fluid. Based on the selected optimum value, the HGSHP was also tested by varying the flow distribution ratio of the secondary fluid flow rate between the ground loop and the supplemental loop, such as 9:1, 7:3, 5:5, and 3:7. The results showed that the optimum flow distribution ratio of the secondary fluid flow rate was 7:3. The COP of the HGSHP was improved by 19% over the GSHP at a flow distribution ratio of 7:3 and an entering water temperature of $40^{\circ}C$.

Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems are actively introduced as cooling and heating conditioning systems of buildings due to annual stable performance and easily maintenance. However, ground temperature imbalance is occurred when the GSHP is used for a long period. Therefore, in this study, we proposed the operation method of the system that considered the recovery time of heat source temperature. The entering water temperature (EWT) and heat exchange rate (HER) were comparatively analyzed according to the continuous and intermittent operation. Furthermore, the underground thermal environment was evaluated by numerical analysis model. As the result, the intermittent operation was a maximum of 12.3% higher HER during the heating period than the continuous operation. In addition, the overall ground heat source temperature at the intermittent operation was higher than it at the continuous operation.
Greenhouses should be heated during nights and cold days in order to fit growth conditions in greenhouses. Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems are recognized to be outstanding heating and cooling systems. A horizontal GSHP system with thermal storage tank was installed in greenhouse and investigated the performance characteristics. The reasons for using thermal storage tank were discussed in detail. Thermal storage tank can provide heat for heating load that is larger than GSHP system heating capacity. The results of study showed that the heating coefficient of performance of the heat pump system was 2.69.

Recently, ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems have attracted much attention, according to the enhanced social demand of renewable energy. GSHP systems can achieve higher coefficient of performance than the conventional air-source heat pump systems by utilizing stable underground temperature. However, the initial cost of GSHP system is higher than that of the conventional systems, especially, in the small-size buildings. Therefore, it is necessary to develop small-size ground heat exchanger with low cost and quick installation. In this study, a unit-type ground heat exchanger was developed and heat exchange rate was calculated by the numerical simulation. As a result, 27.45 W/m of heat exchange rate was acquired in the condition of $0.5m{\times}0.2m{\times}2m$ unit.

A ground source heat pump system maintains a constant efficiency due to its stable heat source and radiant heat temperature which provide a more effective thermal performance than that of the air source heat pump system. As an eco-friendly renewable energy source, it can reduce electric power and carbon dioxide. In this study, we analyzed one year of data from a web based remote monitoring system to estimate the thermal performance of GSHP with the capacity of 3RT, which is installed in a low energy house located in Daejeon, Korea. This GSHP system is a hybrid system connected to a solar hot water system. Cold and hot water stored in a buffer tank is supplied to six ceiling cassette type fan coil units and a floor panel heating system installed in each room. The results are as follows. First, the GSHP system was operated for ten minutes intermittently in summer in order to decrease the heat load caused by super-insulation. Second, the energy consumption in winter where the system was operated throughout the entire day was 7.5 times higher than that in summer. Moreover, the annual COP of the heating and cooling system was 4.1 in summer and 4.2 in winter, showing little difference. Third, the outlet temperature of the ground heat exchanger in winter decreased from $13^{\circ}C$ in November to $9^{\circ}C$ in February, while that in summer increased from $14^{\circ}C$ to $17^{\circ}C$ showing that the temperature change in winter is greater than that in summer.
The present study has been conducted economic analysis of heat storage type ground source heat pump system(HSGSHP) and normal ground source heat pump (GSHP) which are installed at the same building in the shared an apartment house. Cost items, such as initial cost, annual energy cost and maintenance cost of each system are considered to analyze life cycle cost (LCC) and simple payback period (SPP) with initial cost different are compared. The initial cost is a rule to the Government basic unit cost of production. LCC applied present value method is used to assess economical profit of both of them. Variables used to LCC analysis are prices escalation rate and interest rate mean values of during latest 10 years. The LCC result shows that HSGSHP (1,050,910,000won) is more profitable than GSHP by 68.9% initial cost. And SPP appeared 3.0 year overcome the different initial cost by different annual energy cost.
