  • A lot of construction companies in overseas markets of construction try to change 2D CAD to 3D CAD for improving business ability and change to Building Information Modeling(BIM) for integrating information produced from construction life cycle. In America, GSA(General Service Administration) requires a design drawing planed by BIM and in Singapore and Europe, the government encourages architectures to use this tool. Recently in the domestic market, many organizations related construction industry are aware of importance of 3D CAD integrated information, and try to use BIM. Therefore, this research would analyze how does BIM affect construction industry and derive influence factors and provide basic data for using BIM.

  • A general methodology is suggested to solve shelf-space allocation problem of retailers. A multi-item inventory model of breakable items is developed, where items are either complementary or substitute. Demands of the items depend on the amount of stock on the showroom and unit price of the respective items. Also demand of one item decreases (increases) due to the presence of others in case of substitute (complementary) product. For such a model, a Contractive Mapping Genetic Algorithm (CMGA) has been developed and implemented to find the values of different decision variables. These are evaluated to have maximum possible profit out of the proposed system. The system has been illustrated numerically and results for some particular cases are derived. The results are compared with some other heuristic approaches- Simulated Annealing (SA), simple Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Greedy Search Approach (GSA) developed for the present model.

  • In this study, the vulnerability of two existing asymmetric steel building frames to Progressive Collapse (PC) is assessed. The buildings have different frame systems, steel sections and number of stories (nine and six). An alternate path method (APM) with a linear static analysis (LS) is carried out according to General Services Administration (GSA) 2003 guidelines. The Demand Capacity Ratio (DCR) of each primary element (beams and columns) is given with its specific details for all frames. The results show that the nine-story building with a dual frame system (moment frame with bracing system) has a lower susceptibility and greater resistance to PC than the six-story building with a simple building frame system (gravity system with bracing system). Implementing built-up box-shaped sections for columns is a better choice than using built-up I-shaped sections because there is no weak axis for the box section.

  • In this study the progressive collapse potential of three- and nine-story special steel moment frames designed in accordance with current design code was evaluated by nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. It was observed that the model structures had high potential for progressive collapse when a first story column was suddenly removed. Then the size of beams required to satisfy the failure criteria for progressive collapse was obtained by the virtual work method; i.e., using the equilibrium of the external work done by gravity load due to loss of a column and the internal work done by plastic rotation of beams. According to the nonlinear dynamic analysis results, the model structures designed only for normal load turned out to have strong potential for progressive collapse whereas the structures designed by plastic design concept for progressive collapse satisfied the failure criterion recommended by the GSA guideline.

  • Effects of precipitation and cloud cover on high ozone days are examined by investigating the precipitation and average cloud cover before the ozone peak time within a day. High ozone days above 100 ppb in the Greater Seoul Area(GSA) for the ozone season from May to September are chosen for the analyses in terms of the surface meteorological data during 1990~1997. The result shows that the effect of precipitation on the rise of ozone concentration is definitely negative so that ozone concentration could not rise above 100ppb immediately after precipitation. But, the effect of cloud cover is associated with the variations of other meteorological parameters. The number of high ozone days with "zero" cloud cover is rather less than that with cloud cover of 1 to 4 since temperature is usually lower in "zero" cloud cover days. Furthermore, ozone concentration can rise above 100ppb even with full cloud cover when the wind is weak and the temperature is high.temperature is high.

  • The ozone concentrations measured at the National Air Monitoring Stations between 1990 and 1995 were reviewed to detect any anomalies in the measurements. By screening the cases, in which variation of the ozone concentration from the previous measured value is greater than 75ppb, 125 station-days were identified as the test cases for the anomaly test. Historical and parallel consistencies of the measured concentrations were examined by plotting data for each test case. The detected anomalies can be classified into four categories; single outliers, anomalous variations during the startup period, baseline rises, and fluctuations in th diurnal variations. Anomalies were detected in as many as 80 cases among 125 test cases. Because of these anomalies, the number of hours exceeding 100ppb in the areas other than the Greater Seoul Area(GSA) could decrease from 157 to 107. Further studies for developing the methodology for eliminating the abnormal monitoring data are warranted for the data from the National Air Monitoring Stations are official to the both inside and outside of the country.

  • The goal of this paper is to develop a rational static method which consider efficiently the dynamic effect of the gravity load following sudden removal of element. For this goal this paper introduce the equivalent load for element stiffness which is a preceding research result and will develop equivalent static analysis which will be able to predict the maximum behavior considering dynamic effect. Some examples are provided to verify it. Equivalent static analysis is compared with the analysis method which is recommended by the GSA2003 guidelines and the time-history analysis which is the most accurate for dynamic behavior.

  • A case study is a beforehand research to develope 3D architectural design guide line for building and construction. For this case study, the research investigates several cases around world such as Building Information Modeling Guide Series of U.S. GSA(General Service Administration), BIM/IFC User Guide of IAI Germany, IDM(Information Delivery Manual) of IAI Norway, CORENet of Singapore the Ministry of National Development with Building and Construction Authority, and Helsinki University of Technology Auditorium Hall 600(HUT-600) of IAI Finland. The common thing of each case is using IFC for sharing information and interoperability in the life cycle of building. Through the case study, it shows the way how the 3D architectural design guide adapted in Korean situation.

  • Non-Traditional Optimization methods are successfully used in solving many engineering problems. Shaft is one of important element of machines and it is used to transmit power from a machine which produces power to a machine which absorbs power. In this paper, ten non-traditional optimization methods that are ALO, GWO, DA, FPA, FA, WOA, CSO, PSO, BA and GSA are used to find minimum weight of hollow shaft to get global optimal solution. The problem has two design variables and two inequality constraints. The comparative results show that the Particle Swarm Optimization outperforms other methods and the results are validated using ANSYS.

  • We introduce a new degree reduction method for homogeneous symmetric polynomials on binary variables that generalizes the conventional degree reduction methods on monomials introduced by Freedman and Ishikawa. We also design an degree reduction algorithm for general polynomials on binary variables, simulated on the graph coloring problem for random graphs, and compared the results with the conventional methods. The simulated results show that our new method produces reduced quadratic polynomials that contains less variables than the reduced quadratic polynomials produced by the conventional methods.
