Detection of Polymorphism of Growth Hormone Gene for the Analysis of Relationship between Allele Type and Growth Traits in Karan Fries Cattle

  • The present study was conducted to detect polymorphism at growth hormone gene in Karan Fries bulls. A 428 bp fragment of growth hormone gene spanning over $4^{th}$exon, $4^{th}$intron and $5^{th}$ exon was amplified and digested with AluI restriction enzyme to identify polymorphism at this locus. Karan Fries bulls were found to be polymorphic at this locus. Two genotypes LL and LV were identified in Karan Fries with higher allelic frequency for L allele. In Karan Fries males, the average birth weight, 3 months body weight and daily body weight gains of LL homozygotes were significantly higher than that of LV heterozygotes. Genetic distances of KF bulls with respect to genotype along with 3 months body weight and average daily body weight gain forms a single cluster of bulls with LL genotype, while individuals with LV genotype forms three distinct clusters indicating more influence of L allele on growth traits.

An Analysis of Growth Engine Industries using the ORBIS DB

  • Many countries set growth engine technologies and industries for economic growth and job creation. Each country always wants to know their technological or industrial position in the world in these industries. This study aims at identifying the worldwide position of 19 growth engine industries defined in Korean government. The methods are quantitative by counting the number of startup companies in the world. The ORBIS database was used to extract the number. Therefore, this article may be the first research for the world appearance of growth engine industries and its comparison between world and G7, and between G7 countries. Also, this may be the first study using the ORBIS database on the analysis of certain technology industries. Further, we showed a method to identify world features of technology industries.

Growth regulation of cow1 rice mutant seedlings by blue light

  • We assessed whether the cow1 mutant defects are associated with growth of Tos17 and T-DNA insertional rice in blue light (BL). Growth of oscow1 mutants which encoded a member of the YUCCA protein family was retarded in BL. Root to shoot ratios of the mutants were reduced about 2 times lower in the absence of NAA and about 2.5 times lower in the presence of NAA; the shoot growth was not significantly changed by NAA addition. Photosynthetic activity of the mutants was however inhibited in high light. Pigment analysis showed significant difference between wild-type (Chl a:b = 3.02) and mutants (3.84). Carotenoid contents of the mutants were also decreased considerably, implying the involvement of cow1 in pigment formation. These findings lead us to suggest that the growth retardation of oscow1 mutant plants by BL results from the difference of photosynthetic activity in part.

Growth and Distribution of Research Journals Across the World

  • This study assesses the growth and distribution of research journals indexed in Scopus from 2000 through 2019, using SCImago data for journal and country ranking. A total of 15,484 journals were indexed in Scopus up till 1999, and from 2000 to 2019, 11,037 journals were indexed in Scopus at an average of 581.85 journals per year at an average annual corresponding growth of 2.74%. Of the total journals indexed in Scopus, 41.61% were indexed during the last two decades. Europe is the leading continent publishing nearly 60% of the total world journals, while Africa publishes around 1% of journals, the lowest among all the continents. The United Kingdom, United States (US), China, Brazil, Australia, and Egypt are the leading countries publishing the maximum number of journals from their respective continents. Of the total journals indexed across the world, nearly one-fourth (6,425, 24.23%) are published in the US. Still more, of the 109 journal publishing countries across the world, nearly 90% of journals are published in twenty leading journal publishing countries. Among the 27 major Scopus recognized subject disciplines, the majority (1,606, 6.06%) of journals are published in the field of medicine. The growth of research journals and the growth of research results has moved at a uniform pace, and any asymmetry between the two is bound to result either in the introduction of predatory and dubious journals or in the production of sub-standard research results.

잣나무 연륜생장과 기후요소와의 상관관계 분석 및 생장예측 (Correlation Analysis and Growth Prediction between Climatic Elements and Radial Growth for Pinus koraiensis)

  • 본 연구는 잣나무를 대상으로 연륜생장과 기후와의 관계를 구명하기 위해 군집분석을 통해 기후 군집을 분류하였고 기후인자에 의해 연륜생장을 예측할 수 있는 생장모델을 개발하여 기후변화 시나리오 RCP 4.5와 RCP 8.5를 이용하여 연륜생장의 변화를 예측하였다. 연륜기후학적 모델은 잣나무 기후군집별 기후변수와 표준화된 잔차 연대기를 이용하여 개발하였다. 개발된 생장지수 추정식에는 2~4개의 기후변수가 사용되었고 결정계수는 0.35~0.49의 범위에 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 잣나무 기후군집별 생장예측은 두 개의 RCP 기후변화 시나리오를 이용해 예측되었다. 해발고도가 높은 곳에 위치한 군집 2와 군집 3에서는 연륜생장이 증가하였지만 대조적으로 해발고도가 낮은 지역에 위치한 군집 1에서는 연륜생장이 감소할 것으로 예측되었다. 따라서 잣나무는 한대수종이지만 일정범위내의 기온 상승 조건에서는 연륜생장이 증가하는 것으로 평가되었다.

Revisiting the Effect of Financial Elements on Stock Performance Using Corporate Social Responsibility Cost Growth

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of financial elements (asset growth, liability growth, equity growth, revenue growth, and profit growth) on stock price performance and to analyze the growth of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) costs as a moderating effect. The technique analysis used is regression analysis. Samples in this analysis are manufacturing firms listed on the Indonesian Stock Exchange (IDX) for the period 2014-2018. The use of regression models for hypothesis testing must fulfill several applicable assumptions such as Normality Test, Heteroscedasticity Test, Multicollinearity Test, Autocorrelation Test, Model Fit Test, Determination Coefficient Test, and Hypothesis Test. Data analysis used two research models, namely model 1 and model 2. Model 1 is without the moderating variable, and model 2 is with the moderating variable, that is, CSR cost growth. Based on the result of the regression analysis, it can be inferred that the asset, revenue, and profit growth have a positive impact on stock price results. Liabilities and equity growth do not affect stock price performance. Operating expense growth has a significant effect on price performance. CSR cost growth can moderate the effect of growth in financial statement elements on stock price performance but is not significant.

연구기반 스핀오프 벤처기업의 성장단계별 성공요인에 관한 탐색적 연구: 이론 및 사례 연구를 중심으로 (An Exploratory Study on the Success Factors of Research-based Spin-off Venture Across Stages of Growth: Pertaining to Theoretical and Case Study)

  • 본 연구는 연구기관에서 개발한 기술을 기반으로 창업한 연구기반 스핀오프 벤처기업의 성장단계 및 단계별 성공요인에 관한 이론 및 사례연구이다. 이론연구를 통해 연구기반 스핀오프 벤처기업의 성장단계는 일반 벤처기업의 개념화와 개발기, 상업화기, 성장기, 안정기로 구성되는 4단계 성장단계에 대비되는 단계가 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 연구기반 스핀오프 벤처기업은 1단계인 개념화와 개발기에는 연구결과로부터 사업 아이디어를 도출, 2단계인 상업화기에는 사업 아이디어로부터 도출된 것을 신규 벤처 프로젝트로 완결, 3단계인 성장기에는 신규 프로젝트로부터 스핀오픈 벤처기업을 출범, 4단계인 안정기에는 스핀오프 벤처기업에 의한 경제적 부의 창출 강화라는 성장단계가 있으며 단계별로 고유한 과제가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 사례연구로 정부출연연구소를 모태기관으로 하여 스핀오프로 창업한 벤처기업에 대한 분석을 하였다. 사례분석을 통해 연구기반 스핀오프 벤처기업은 각 단계별 고유한 과제의 해결이 이루어져야 다음 단계로의 성공적인 이행이 되는 것으로 나타났다 후반부에 본 논문의 시사점과 연구의 한계 및 향후 연구 방향에 대해 제시하였다.

Antimicrobial Activity of Vaccinium macrocarpon (Cranberry) Produced Proanthocyanidin (PAC) on the Growth and Adhesion Properties of Staphylococcus aureus

  • Cranberries have long been used by lay people to relieve the symptoms of urinary tract infections. Recent research has determined that the component of cranberry called proanthocyanidin (PAC) is the primary mechanism for inhibiting P-fimbriated E.coli adhesion to uroepithelial cells in vitro. A series of experiments were performed to determine the effects of PAC on growth and adhesion of uropathogenic E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus to urinary catheter material. The results showed that PAC-inhibited binding of Gram positive S. aureus to collagen coated surfaces and significantly decreased the growth of these bacteria. P-fimbriated E.coli did not bind well to the biomaterial and their growth was unaffected by the cranberry extract with the exception of some loss in viability at 1000 $\mu\textrm{g}$/mL after 5 to 18 hours of exposure. This is the first report of the potential for cranberries to interfere with the adhesion and growth of S. aureus, a multi-drug resistant organisms responsible for morbidity and mortality especially in hospitalized patients.

Plant Hormones Promote Growth in Lichen-Forming Fungi

  • The effect of plant hormones on the growth of lichen-forming fungi (LFF) was evaluated. The use of 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid and indole-3-butyric acid resulted in a 99% and 57% increase in dry weight of the lichen-forming fungus Nephromopsis ornata. The results suggest that some plant hormones can be used as inducers or stimulators of LFF growth for large-scale culture.

Mitochondrial DNA Polymorphism, Maternal Lineage and Correlations with Postnatal Growth of Japanese Black Beef Cattle to Yearling Age

  • Mitochondrial DNA haplotypes from the displacement-loop (D-loop) region (436 bp) were genotyped and sequenced in Japanese Black beef cattle raised in the same herd. Correlation coefficients between mitochondrial DNA haplotypes, maternal lineage, birth weight, preweaning average daily gain, weaning weight, post weaning average daily gain and yearling weight were computed. The objective was to study the relationship between maternal and postnatal growth traits and to investigate if postnatal growth of calves to yearling age could be accurately predicted from mitochondrial DNA haplotypes. Results of the phylogenetic analysis revealed 17 maternal lineages and four mitochondrial DNA haplotypes. There were strong, positive and highly significant (p<0.001) correlations among maternal traits ranging from 0.52 to 0.98. Similarly, among postnatal growth traits, most of the correlations were also strong, positive and highly significant (p<0.001); the highest correlation of 0.94 was between preweaning average daily gain and weaning weight. However, correlations between mitochondrial DNA haplotypes and postnatal growth traits were very low, mostly negative and non-significant (p>0.05) ranging from -0.05 to 0.1. Prediction of postnatal growth from mitochondrial DNA yielded very low $R^{2}$ values ranging from 0.002 to 0.019. It was concluded that mitochondrial DNA polymorphism has no significant association with postnatal growth from birth to yearling age, and by implication, nuclear rather than cytoplasmic DNA, accounts for most of the genetic variation observed in postnatal growth of Japanese Black cattle. Therefore, mitochondrial DNA genotyping at an early age has no bearing on the accurate prediction of the future growth performance of calves.
