A finite element model (FEM) for predicting early-age behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) bridge deck slabs with fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars is presented. In this model, the shrinkage profile of concrete accounted for the effect of surrounding conditions including air flow. The results of the model were verified against the experimental test results, published by the authors. The model was verified for cracking pattern, crack width and spacing, and reinforcement strains in the vicinity of the crack using different types and ratios of longitudinal reinforcement. The FEM was able to predict the experimental results within 6 to 10% error. The verified model was utilized to conduct a parametric study investigating the effect of four key parameters including reinforcement spacing, concrete cover, FRP bar type, and concrete compressive strength on the behavior of FRP-RC bridge deck slabs subjected to restrained shrinkage at early-age. It is concluded that a reinforcement ratio of 0.45% carbon FRP (CFRP) can control the early-age crack width and reinforcement strain in CFRP-RC members subjected to restrained shrinkage. Also, the results indicate that changing the bond-slippage characteristics (sand-coated and ribbed bars) or concrete cover had an insignificant effect on the early-age crack behavior of FRP-RC bridge deck slabs subjected to shrinkage. However, reducing bar spacing and concrete strength resulted in a decrease in crack width and reinforcement strain.

This research studies the behavior of the FRP-concrete interface subjected to two environmental substances. Frist is to investigate the behavior by the application of different bonding materials at the interface between FRP and concrete, second is to understand a long-term performance at the interface by Freeze-thaw actions. The parameters considered in this research are the maximum bonding strength and the effective bonding length at the FRP-concrete interface. In the first experimental phase, three types of specimens are fabricated and tested considering the number of applied bonding materials and the Freeze-thaw tests are performed to evaluate the behavior of the interface in the cycle range of 0 to 300 cycles. Finally, it is known that there is a 5~7% difference of the effective bonding length between applied bonding materials and the values for the maximum stress and the effective length under Freeze-thaw action are varied randomly as the freeze-thaw cycle is increased even though initial reduction of their capacities are occurred.

Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs) have recently been highly used for repairing and strengthening civil structures due to their superior material properties. By using FRPs, external bond method is the most used method in the construction industry. Although many researches on reinforced concrete externally strengthened with FRPs have been conducted, time-dependant behaviors of the beams have not been investigated yet. This paper documents a series of beam experiments that were carried out to evaluate time-dependant behavior. Three RC beams were built and the parameters considered in this experiment were types of FRPs. Through these experiments, it was proved that the beam strengthened with CFRP was more effective than that with GFRP in terms of time-dependant behavior.

The strengthening performance of FRPs(Fiber Reinforced Polymers) is directly affected by the environmental conditions such as freezing-thawing and moisture because FRPs are usually bonded on the concrete surface. It is, therefore, strongly required to evaluate a durability of bond between FRPs and concrete as well as FRP materials itself. The freezing-thawing resistance of FRPs is evaluated in this study with the variables of freezing-thawing conditions, types of FRP and freezing-thawing cycles. From the test results, it is found that tensile strength and pull-off strength of CFRP are not affected by the freezing-thawing. On the other hands, those of GFRP show a little degradation because of continuous water immersion during thawing process. But, cautions are needed on the bond durability between FRPs and concrete in case of continuous water supplying from adjacent to the concrete.

Development of new concrete bridge deck system with FRP plank using as a permanent formwork and the main tensile reinforcement recently has been actively conducted. Concurrent use as a reinforcing material and a permanent formwork, it is possible to reduce the construction time and construction costs than the usual concrete slab. In this study, an experiment was carried out for the bond stress between cast-in-place concrete and the type of FRP plank using as a permanent formwork. The interfacial fracture energy that can be one of the most important parameters were evaluated for adhesion performance and bond stress to know the characteristics of the failure mechanism of the adhesion surface. Interfacial fracture energy of normal concrete is 0.24kN/m of GF11 case, in the case of GF21, 0.43kN/m appears, in the case of CF11 and GF31, 0.44kN/m and 0.46kN/m respectively it appeared. In case of RFCON, 0.52kN/m appears from GF12, the CF12 and GF22, 0.51kN/m and 0.36kN/m appeared each case.

The use of FRP(Fiber Reinforced Polymer) bars to replace conventional steel bars in reinforcing concrete structures is currently encouraged by many structural engineers, especially for their noncorrosive properties. The partial inferiority of the bond and mechanical properties for FRP bars, however, leads to wider and deeper cracks compared with those of steel reinforced concrete structures. This paper presents experimental results of concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars tested under static loading conditions up to failure. The study focuses on the effects of the reinforcement ratio on the behavior of concrete beams at various stages during loading. The study also attempts to establish a theoretical basis for the development of simple and rational design procedures for concrete beams reinforced with FRP bars.

Larger crack widths can be observed more in FRP-reinforced concrete members than in steel-reinforced concrete members as a result of the lower elastic modulus and bond strength of FRP reinforcement. The ACI 440.1R-15 design guide provides equations derived as the maximum bar spacing to control the crack widths indirectly. On the other hand, it is not concerned with long-term effects on the crack control design provisions. This study provides suggestions for how to incorporate time-dependent effects into the crack width equation. The work presented herein includes the results from 8 beams composed of four rectangular and T-shaped FRP-reinforced concrete beams tested for one year under four-point bending. Over a one year period, the crack widths increased as much as 2.6~3.0 times in GFRP and AFRP-reinforced specimens and 1.1~1.4 times in the CFRP-reinforced specimens compared to steel-reinforced specimens. In addition, the average multiple for crack width at one year relative to the instantaneous crack width upon the application of the sustained load was 2.4 in the specimens with a rectangular section and 3.1 in the specimens with a T-shaped section. As a result, it is recommended conservatively that the time-dependent coefficient be taken as 2.5 for the rectangular beams and 3.5 for T-beams.

In the recent construction industry, an external strengthening method using fiber reinforced polymers has been widely used. Since reinforced concrete structures strengthened with fiber reinforced polymers are always under sustained loads, influence of creep and shrinkage on the structures is inevitable. Due to the creep and shrinkage, behaviors of the structures, such as deflection, deformation, recovery capability, strength and so on are also under the influence of creep and shrinkage. Thus, in order to estimate efficacy, creep recovery and residual strength of FRP strengthened RC beams, long-term flexural experiments and static flexural experiments were carried out. As the result of the experiments, FRP strengthened RC beams were very effective in terms of deflection control. Furthermore, the strengthened beams had higher immediate deformation recovery than immediate deformation. Through the static flexural experiments, it was shown that the CFRP strengthened beam had high residual strength. It seems that the sustained loads did not affect bond and residual strength of the beams.

An experimental study was performed to evaluate the possibility of using stiff type PolyUrea(PU) on RC slab as a strengthening material. Stiff type PU(STPU) was sprayed on the bottom surface of the slab specimens, which were then attached with CFRP or GFRP sheets. Also the evaluation of the bond capacity, the single most influential parameter on strengthening of RC structures, was carried out the flexural capacity evaluation test results showed that the load carrying capacity of the PU specimen was greater and less than the unstrengthened and FRP sheet attached specimens, respectively. The STPU specimens showed a ductile flexural behavior in the plastic displacement range. With respect to bond capacity, the bond strength of all of the specimen exceeded the code required bond strength of 1.5 MPa. Also, the STPU sprayed specimen without using epoxy resin did not peel off when the tensile grip was applied for testing. The stability of the PU bond failure indicate a good bond strength of PU when applied to concrete.
